Title: The title should present a concise and descriptive statement that clearly conveys the core idea of the research projects. Make it as specific as possible. The reader should immediately be able to grasp the core idea of the intended research project. Often, the title is left too vague and does not help give an understanding of what exactly the study looks at.
Abstract: Abstracts are usually around 250-300 words and provide an overview of what is to follow – including the research problem , objectives, methods, expected outcomes, and significance of the study. Use it as a roadmap and ensure that, if the abstract is the only thing someone reads, they’ll get a good fly-by of what will be discussed in the peice.
Introduction: Introductions are all about contextualization. They often set the background information with a statement of the problem. At the end of the introduction, the reader should understand what the rationale for the study truly is. I like to see the research questions or hypotheses included in the introduction and I like to get a good understanding of what the significance of the research will be. Literature Review: The literature review dives deep into the existing literature on the topic, demosntrating your thorough understanding of the existing literature including themes, strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in the literature. It serves both to demonstrate your knowledge of the field and, to demonstrate how the proposed study will fit alongside the literature on the topic. A good literature review concludes by clearly demonstrating how your research will contribute something new and innovative to the conversation in the literature.
Research Design and Methods: This section needs to clearly demonstrate how the data will be gathered and analyzed in a systematic and academically sound manner. Here, you need to demonstrate that the conclusions of your research will be both valid and reliable. Common points discussed in the research design and methods section include highlighting the research paradigm, methodologies, intended population or sample to be studied, data collection techniques, and data analysis procedures . Toward the end of this section, you are encouraged to also address ethical considerations and limitations of the research process , but also to explain why you chose your research design and how you are mitigating the identified risks and limitations.
Timeline: Provide an outline of the anticipated timeline for the study. Break it down into its various stages (including data collection, data analysis, and report writing). The goal of this section is firstly to establish a reasonable breakdown of steps for you to follow and secondly to demonstrate to the assessors that your project is practicable and feasible.
Budget: Estimate the costs associated with the research project and include evidence for your estimations. Typical costs include staffing costs, equipment, travel, and data collection tools. When applying for a scholarship, the budget should demonstrate that you are being responsible with your expensive and that your funding application is reasonable.
Expected Outcomes and Implications: A discussion of the anticipated findings or results of the research, as well as the potential contributions to the existing knowledge, theory, or practice in the field. This section should also address the potential impact of the research on relevant stakeholders and any broader implications for policy or practice.
References: A complete list of all the sources cited in the research proposal, formatted according to the required citation style. This demonstrates the researcher’s familiarity with the relevant literature and ensures proper attribution of ideas and information.
Appendices (if applicable): Any additional materials, such as questionnaires, interview guides, or consent forms, that provide further information or support for the research proposal. These materials should be included as appendices at the end of the document.

So you’ve settled on a topic and found a niche—but what exactly will your research investigate, and why does it matter? To give your project focus and purpose, you have to define a research problem .
The problem might be a practical issue—for example, a process or practice that isn’t working well, an area of concern in an organization’s performance, or a difficulty faced by a specific group of people in society.
Alternatively, you might choose to investigate a theoretical problem—for example, an underexplored phenomenon or relationship, a contradiction between different models or theories, or an unresolved debate among scholars.
To put the problem in context and set your objectives, you can write a problem statement . This describes who the problem affects, why research is needed, and how your research project will contribute to solving it.

Next, based on the problem statement, you need to write one or more research questions . These target exactly what you want to find out. They might focus on describing, comparing, evaluating, or explaining the research problem.
A strong research question should be specific enough that you can answer it thoroughly using appropriate qualitative or quantitative research methods. It should also be complex enough to require in-depth investigation, analysis, and argument. Questions that can be answered with “yes/no” or with easily available facts are not complex enough for a thesis or dissertation.

The research design is a practical framework for answering your research questions. It involves making decisions about the type of data you need, the methods you’ll use to collect and analyze it, and the location and timescale of your research.
There are often many possible paths you can take to answering your questions. The decisions you make will partly be based on your priorities. For example, do you want to determine causes and effects, draw generalizable conclusions, or understand the details of a specific context?
You need to decide whether you will use primary or secondary data and qualitative or quantitative methods . You also need to determine the specific tools, procedures, and materials you’ll use to collect and analyze your data, as well as your criteria for selecting participants or sources.

In one of my recent LinkedIn discussions about business strategy, a commenter lamented : “Unfortunately, many of the strategic plans we see are no more than a mish-mash collage of ‘individual level’ rush-to-do’s, often missing out on an ‘organization-level’ cohesive and thought-through design intent.”
A new approach to a routine blood test could predict a person’s 30-year risk of heart disease, research published Saturday in the New England Journal of Medicine found.
Doctors have long assessed their patients’ risk for cardiovascular disease by using a blood test to look at cholesterol levels, focusing particularly on LDL or “bad” cholesterol . But limiting blood testing to just cholesterol misses important — and usually silent — risk factors, experts say.
“We have other biomarkers that tell us about other kinds of biological problems our patients who are destined to have cardiovascular disease are likely to have,” said lead study author Dr. Paul Ridker, director of the Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
Ridker and his team found that in addition to LDL cholesterol, two other markers — a type of fat in the blood called lipoprotein (a), or Lp(a), and an indicator of inflammation — are important predictors of a person's risk of heart attack , stroke and coronary heart disease.
The findings were also presented Saturday at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2024 in London.
In the study, the researchers analyzed data from nearly 30,000 U.S. women who were part of the Women’s Health Study . On average, the women were 55 years old when they enrolled in the years 1992 through 1995. About 13% — roughly 3,600 participants — had either a heart attack or stroke, had surgery to fix a narrowed or blocked artery, or died from heart disease over the 30-year follow-up period.
Though the research was done in women, Ridker said the findings would likely also apply to men.
Still, the focus on women was on purpose, he said. “This is a largely preventable disease, but women tend to be under treated and underdiagnosed.”
All of the women had blood tests done at the beginning of the study to measure their LDL cholesterol, Lp(a) and C-reactive protein levels, a marker of inflammation in the body.
These measurements, individually as well as together, appeared to predict a woman’s heart health over the next three decades, the study found.
Women with the highest levels of LDL cholesterol had a 36% higher risk for heart disease compared with those with the lowest levels. The highest levels of Lp(a) indicated a 33% elevated risk, and those with the highest levels of CRP were 70% more at risk for heart disease.
When the three were looked at together, women who had the highest levels were 1.5 times more likely to have a stroke and over three times more likely to develop coronary heart disease over the next 30 years compared with women with the lowest levels.
All of the markers have been individually linked to higher risk of heart disease, but “all three represent different biological processes. They tell us why someone is actually at risk,” Ridker said.
Traditional risk factors for heart disease include obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels . Testing for Lp(a) and CRP can reveal less obvious risk factors.
“You can have no traditional risk factors and just by having that high Lp(a), you are at higher risk,” said Dr. Rachel Bond, system director of women’s heart health at Dignity Health in Arizona, who was not involved with the study.
Bond said everyone should get their Lp(a) tested once in their lives. If they have elevated levels at any point, they will for life. There is one caveat: Post-menopausal women can develop high Lp(a) and may want to have their levels tested again at that time, Bond said.
On the other hand, LDL cholesterol and CRP levels fluctuate throughout a person’s life. Ridker supports doctors running the three-pronged blood test when patients are in their 30s or 40s, to catch potentially overlooked risk factors early, when there is time to intervene.
Although exercising, eating well and not smoking are all important, people with already elevated levels of Lp(a), LDL and CRP will likely require medication, said Dr. Steven Nissen, chief academic officer of the Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, who was not involved with the study.
“We can’t expect lifestyle interventions are going to do the job alone for most people,” Nissen said.
The study had several limitations that future research may address, including a lack of racial and ethnic diversity, which plays an important role in a person’s risk for heart disease. Nearly all of the participants — 94% — were white.
Nissen also noted that the study stopped measuring Lp(a) levels once they passed a certain threshold.
“The highest levels of lipoprotein (a) in this study weren’t even high enough to reach the clinical threshold at which a patient would be treated,” he said. “It tends to underestimate the risk of lipoprotein (a).”
Dr. Kunihiro Matsushita, a professor of epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, who specializes in cardiology, said that while inflammation is definitely important, “that doesn’t mean CRP is the best marker for predicting cardiovascular disease risk.”
“Using three biomarkers is interesting, but the choice of which biomarkers these are can be explored further,” said Matsushita, who also wasn't involved with the new research.
He added that testing for inflammation, LDL and Lp(a) is particularly important for people who are traditionally thought of as low risk for heart disease, including women, young people and those of East Asian descent.
Ridker agreed.
“Physicians will not treat things they don’t measure,” he said.

Gov. Kim Reynolds seems to have lost sight of her focus on trusting parents. She forced through legislation providing taxpayer-funded vouchers for parents to use for private school tuition and many other education related initiatives, all under the umbrella that parents know what is best for their child.
However, in rejecting the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 2025 Summer EBT program, we now learn that parents cannot be trusted to purchase healthy food for their children using a summer EBT card. With the card, families could purchase whatever is appropriate for their children, rather than be limited to what is provided in a generic food box for all.
Are we even considering families from different ethnic groups? I suspect the fresh fruits and vegetables families could purchase with the EBT card would be much more wholesome and healthier than whatever is in the box. Would families be able to pick up a food box anytime of the day? Many families rely on extended hours at grocery stores that allow them to feed their family and keep their low-pay jobs. It is time to trust families, reverse a bad decision, and welcome the USDA 2025 Summer EBT program!

Gov. Kim Reynolds plans to replace the federal EBT summer program, which provides pre-loaded grocery cards to the poor, with food box distributions at churches, nonprofits and food banks.
This not only uses federal tax dollars to promote religion but also leads to wasted food and tax dollars, while reducing sales for Iowa grocery stores. Grocery stores are experts in managing food stocks and bear the loss if food spoils. Under the governor’s plan, churches and other locations will likely discard spoiled food, with taxpayers covering the cost.

Let me get this right. Gov. Kim Reynolds want to receive the $29 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Summer EBT program and purchase groceries, then hire people throughout the state to package these items and deliver to the ones in need.

Gov. Kim Reynolds has requested a waiver for Iowa regarding participation in the federal 2025 Summer EBT Program to feed children. The waiver would put the state in the position of determining what food children would be eating and deciding the community organizations that would receive the funding to purchase and distribute the food.
There are two things about this request that trouble me. The first is that it indicates the governor really doesn’t trust families to make the best decisions regarding what their children eat. The pattern seems to be that the state knows best when it comes to the hours that children work, what children read and what children eat. However, when it comes to allocating precious public resources for education, families know best.
The second is that the waiver would decrease the resources that would go directly to families and feeding children. Allocating funds to community organizations through a competitive grant system will require additional oversight and management and will make it more difficult for families to access the food for their children.
Instead of having the food available at home, the food will need to be purchased, packaged and distributed by a community organization. The community organization will need to spend time preparing a grant to request the funding. They may need to add staff to operate the distribution of the food. The organization will need to have a way to verify that those receiving the food are eligible. The state will need to provide oversight to ensure the funds are properly used.
Families will need to find a way to get their children to the site where the food is available. Even if the organization provides the means for the children to access the food, that is an additional cost that is not going to the purchase of food.
At least, unlike this year when Summer EBT funds were turned down, the governor is acknowledging that Iowa needs help to feed our children.

It is with deep sadness, disbelief and horror that I learned that Gov. Kim Reynolds decided to refuse the federal subsidy of $29 million for food assistance for the children of Iowa for summer 2025. As a regular contributor to a Des Moines food pantry, it is clear that individual donors cannot match what this grant would have provided. How many Iowa kids will fail to meet development and physical growth markers due to poor nutrition? How many Iowa kids will go to bed hungry because the food pantry does not stretch far enough? How many Iowa kids will have poorer health outcomes due to inadequate nutrition? I sit in disbelief and my heart breaks at the mean-spirited nature of this decision for another year.
In 2024 the state program reportedly provided $900,000 to meet the needs of Iowa kids. That pales in comparison to what is possible with $29 million! Has the governor been grocery shopping lately? I think not! Instead, she sticks her head in the sand and ignores the needs of existing kids. All attention goes to unborn kids, but once you are born, well, good luck! Hungry? Too bad.

Thousands of students across the country will soon be finding out their GCSE results and thinking about the next steps in their education.
Here we explain everything you need to know about the big day, from when results day is, to the current 9-1 grading scale, to what your options are if your results aren’t what you’re expecting.
GCSE results day will be taking place on Thursday the 22 August.
The results will be made available to schools on Wednesday and available to pick up from your school by 8am on Thursday morning.
Schools will issue their own instructions on how and when to collect your results.
The shift to the numerical grading system was introduced in England in 2017 firstly in English language, English literature, and maths.
By 2020 all subjects were shifted to number grades. This means anyone with GCSE results from 2017-2020 will have a combination of both letters and numbers.
The numerical grading system was to signal more challenging GCSEs and to better differentiate between students’ abilities - particularly at higher grades between the A *-C grades. There only used to be 4 grades between A* and C, now with the numerical grading scale there are 6.
The grades are ranked from 1, the lowest, to 9, the highest.
The grades don’t exactly translate, but the two grading scales meet at three points as illustrated below.
The bottom of grade 7 is aligned with the bottom of grade A, while the bottom of grade 4 is aligned to the bottom of grade C.
Meanwhile, the bottom of grade 1 is aligned to the bottom of grade G.
If your results weren’t what you were expecting, firstly don’t panic. You have options.
First things first, speak to your school or college – they could be flexible on entry requirements if you’ve just missed your grades.
They’ll also be able to give you the best tailored advice on whether re-sitting while studying for your next qualifications is a possibility.
If you’re really unhappy with your results you can enter to resit all GCSE subjects in summer 2025. You can also take autumn exams in GCSE English language and maths.
Speak to your sixth form or college to decide when it’s the best time for you to resit a GCSE exam.
Entry requirements vary depending on the college and course. Ask your school for advice, and call your college or another one in your area to see if there’s a space on a course you’re interested in.
Apprenticeships combine a practical training job with study too. They’re open to you if you’re 16 or over, living in England, and not in full time education.
As an apprentice you’ll be a paid employee, have the opportunity to work alongside experienced staff, gain job-specific skills, and get time set aside for training and study related to your role.
