This thesis investigates the economic geography of the gig economy in Indonesia, with the focus on the interplay between workers in the gig economy and their surrounding physical spaces. Although digital platforms have challenged traditional geographic work boundaries, as gig workers continue to operate within physical spaces and set up their work on the ground, this research emphasizes the importance of geography and the spatial context in understanding the gig economy. This thesis contributes to economic geography literature through two main themes. Firstly, it bridges literature on labour agency, platform control, and regional embeddedness. It proposes a robust framework on how gig workers employ various forms of labour agency in physical spaces to improve their working conditions. This research also exposes the dual role of the platform in shaping and constraining labour agency and demonstrates how different forms of agency may have varying effects on their earnings. Additionally, this thesis reintroduces the term "regional embeddedness" to link the labour agency of gig workers with urban studies literature. Despite the remote nature of their work, online gig workers anchor their labour agency to the cities where they live by utilizing multiple locations of workplaces, actively seeking local buzz in communities, and acting as local entrepreneurs to expand their gig services. Secondly, this thesis highlights the urban-centric nature of the gig economy, emphasizing how both location-based and online gig workers gain benefits from urban agglomeration. For location-based gig workers, neighborhood-based communities serve as spaces for constructing collective spatial fixes. On one hand, they may function as coping spaces where individuals engage in social activities to offer mutual support. Conversely, they may serve as transformative spaces that foster a collective consciousness and cultivate a sense of 'community of struggle'. In macro perspective, this thesis emphasizes the significance of intra-urban scale agglomeration in explaining income differences across location-based gig workers. Meanwhile, for online gig workers, factors such as the strong social connections, the reliability and accessibility of urban amenities, the vibrant urban atmosphere, and the reputation of creative cities may explain the unequal distribution of workers across cities. This suggests that the presence of platform-based work is not uniformly translated into equal opportunities across spaces. The thesis consists of a systematic literature review (Chapter 2), three empirical essays (Chapter 3, 4, and 5), and concluding remarks (Chapter 6). Each essay functions as an independent study with different research questions and distinct novelties to specific literature in economic geography. The systematic review aims to understand comprehensively the role of geography in the 6 existing literature of the gig economy. It is found that discussions on spaces and geography extend beyond dedicated geography and urban studies journals and spread across broader literature. Studies incorporating geographical discourse are mapped into three main clusters: (1) the role of physical space in the absence of workplace, (2) the spatial implication of the presence of the gig economy platform, and (3) Collective actions and regulating the gig economy. The first essay explores how income variation across gig drivers working in the gig economy can be explained by workplace location choice and attitudes related to their labour agency. By utilizing survey data from a large sample of gig drivers in Jakarta, this essay found the presence of workplace location premium: drivers who choose to work in areas with concentrated economic activities earn higher payoffs compared to those who stay in less agglomerated areas. This essay also reveals three dimensions of attitudes that matter in explaining income differences. High level of ‘tacit knowledge and driving skills’ tend to increase driver’s income. On the other hand, attitudes related to ‘reliance on technology and the platform’ and ‘social networks’ negatively affect the income. The second essay explores how gig drivers exercised labour agency to improve their working conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic. Drawing on a survey and in-depth interviews with gig drivers in Jakarta, it contributes to the literature by reconceptualizing typology of labour agency in the gig economy based on two main categories: (1) whether the agency aims to transform the system or to cope with the current reality, and (2) whether the agency is undertaken individually or collectively. This essay further presents main obstacles that explain why not all workers may exercise these practices. Finally, it argues that external forces such as pandemic shock, local labour market conditions, and platform control should be considered as factors that shaping and limiting labour agency. It demonstrates that workers in the gig economy are embedded into socio-economic, cultural, and geographical contexts. The third essay investigates how online gig workers embed into the local context to reap the benefit of urban agglomeration. In the absence of a traditional workplace, workers tend to develop a continuous process of becoming part of the city. By drawing on interviews with online gig workers in five secondary cities in Indonesia, this essay structures the notion of regional embeddedness into three main mechanisms. First, workers organize remote tasks ‘on the ground’ by utilizing multiple locations of workplaces. Second, they actively cultivate face-to-face interactions within their social networks for exchanging knowledge and sharing similar identity. Finally, they operate as micro-entrepreneurs who leverage urban density as a business ecosystem to scale up their services.

Did summer save its thrillingest thriller for last? That's what it looks like in "Strange Darling," now in theaters, where it keeps juggling time frames to throw us off course to investigate what writer-director JT Mollner called, in an interview with Collider , "one day in the romantic twisted love life of a serial killer."
Intrigued? You should be. I pause here to warn you that going in cold is the best way to approach the perverse pleasures of "Strange Darling." My advice? Come back to this review after you've seen it and we'll talk. There many delicious, nerve-frying shocks to deconstruct.
Review: 'blink twice' is a ticking time bomb of a movie that makes every second count.
An onscreen message, read by Jason Patric, tells us we'll be diving into the head of a serial killer in six nonlinear chapters. So why not start with Chapter 3, in which we watch a terrified woman (Willa Fitzgerald), wearing blood-red scrubs, screaming "help me" as she runs for her life down a road while a dude (Kyle Gallner), in a pickup truck, shotgun in hand, is hot on her tail?
Think you know what happens next? Don't be a fool. You won't have a clue. Zipping into Chapter 5, we hear the dude utter the teasing, menacing words, "Here, kitty kitty kitty." That's three kitties, and each is more chilling than the next.
Snap to Chapter 1 and we learn that the woman has a safe word: "Mr. Snuffy," after Mr. Snuffleupagus of "Sesame Street." The word comes in handy during a hotel stop for a one-night stand during which the man tries to strangle her.
"Sometimes when I see people, I see demons," she announces, referring to him as "Demon."
In Chapter 4, the "Lady," as the Demon calls her, seeks refuge at a cabin occupied by a seemingly nice couple, delightfully played by acting veterans Ed Begley Jr. and Barbara Hershey. Much time is spent watching the couple prepare a breakfast of eggs with heavy dollops of butter and whipped cream. Of course, warm domesticity soon descends into sheer terror.
Ketamine and cocaine are introduced as early as Chapter 2 and will play a major role in maintaining control for the Lady and the Demon.
"Strange Darling" quits being contrary and ends where it should end with Chapter 6, entitled "Who is Gary Gilmore?" Gilmore was a real-life murderer who was executed by firing squad in 1977 and became the subject of Norman Mailer's nonfiction classic, "The Executioner's Song." I'll leave you to figure out how Gilmore fits into this tale of strange bedfellows.
Confession: I've been withholding major plot points from you in this review, merely sketching in the bones of the story. It really is best to go in blind. Visually, "Strange Darling" tells its own story, eerily abetted by the evocative lighting and camerawork contributed by Giovanni Ribisi, the "Avatar" actor making a dazzling feature debut as a cinematographer.
And the actors similarly rise to the macabre occasion. Fitzgerald ("Reacher," "The Fall of the House of Usher") seizes the role of her career to date as the Lady and takes it to places you truly don't see coming. And Gallner, so good in films as diverse as "Smile" and "The Passenger," is a spine-tingling wonder as this so-called Demon who keeps showing haunting vestiges of humanity. He's simply sensational.
Still, it's filmmaker Mollner who deserves cheers for the wow factor he packs into this cinematic punch in the gut. With only one other film to his credit, the wobbly 2016 western "Outlaws and Angels," Mollner shows he's ready for the big leagues, given the artful cunning and masterful control he reveals in "Strange Darling." You truly won't know what hit you.

The Detroit Lions elected to hold on to undrafted free agent rookie wide receiver Isaiah Williams through the final round of cuts.
The Illinois product was viewed as a favorite to make the team amongst the crop of UDFAs because of the hefty guaranteed amount of his contract. However, he rightfully earned his spot on the final roster because of the playmaking ability he showed in the team's three preseason games.
While Williams may not play a large role right away, there is potential for him to be an impact player within Ben Johnson's offensive scheme.
Here's a look at how Williams could help the Lions in a variety of ways as a rookie in 2024.
Receiving ability
Williams is primarily a slot receiver and didn't get much to show on the outside throughout the preseason. However, he was the team's leader in both receptions and yards in the preseason and flashed the ability to be a dynamic receiver.
Where he did most of his work was in the middle of the field. In this first clip, the Steelers are in man coverage with safety help over the top and Williams is in the left slot. With the outside receiver running a clearout route, the middle of the field is wide open.
Williams displays his fleet footwork, which is a common theme throughout this review, and disrupts the rhythm of the defender . He stops and starts on a dime, which creates enough separation for him to make the catch.
Once he hauls it in, he has created enough room between himself and the defender to get some yardage after the catch. With the safeties getting depth to help on the deep routes, Williams can simply own the middle of the field.
The Lions have receivers who already fit this mold in Amon-Ra St. Brown and Kalif Raymond. However, St. Brown is a threat at all levels of the defense and Raymond may not be asked to play a huge role on offense with his status as the team's primary return man.
As a result, some opportunities could come available for Williams in the slot. He could fit nicely next to Jameson Williams, who is likely to specialize in these same deep routes seen above by Kaden Davis the receiver lined up next to Isaiah Williams.
This same concept can be seen one week earlier against the Kansas City Chiefs. The outside receiver runs a fade route and Williams takes over the middle of the field. He sells the stop route, then gets out of the route and takes advantage of the space created by the safeties dropping deep.
Williams also shows off some shiftiness after the catch, making two defenders miss before going down after a modest gain.
Gadget potential
Even if there aren't as many targets available for Williams to make a big impact in the passing game, plays like the one below can be a way for Detroit to get the ball in his hands.
This is a jet-sweep concept designed to get Williams the ball while he's moving at full speed. While it can be tough to block if the defense is aligned correctly, it's a way for him to put pressure on the edge of the defense with his speed.
Here, he does a nice job reading his block and cuts upfield rather than stretching the play toward the sideline. Once he plants and gets upfield, he makes one defender miss with an arm-tackle attempt, then spins off another. He runs for a first down, displaying elusiveness in the process.
Return impact
If the Lions elect to utilize Raymond more on the offensive side of the ball, Williams is more than capable of taking the reins in the return game.
He's a candidate to line up with Raymond within the NFL's new kick return rules, which calls for two deep return men. In the preseason, Williams attempted three kick returns and gained a total of 93 yards.
Take this attempt against Pittsburgh into account. He does an excellent job of navigating the blocks. A crease opens on the right side and he wastes no time shooting towards it. The Illinois product then maneuvers toward the outside and nearly finds a lane through the chaos, but is unable to evade the defender coming from his right side.
Williams is also capable of being a contributor on punt returns as well. He averaged 11.8 yards on six punt returns in the preseason. Though this return against the Steelers was shortened because of a holding penalty, it offers a good look at what he can do in open space.
For starters, he showcases his excellent feet once again by evading the first defender. After all, the key to a big return is making the first guy miss and allowing your coverage team time to set up the blocks.
Once he makes the first player miss, he cuts toward the sideline in an attempt to run around the wall that Detroit is setting up in that direction. A member of the Lions ' return unit misses a block and the defender cuts Williams off, but he uses a nice jump cut to stay on his feet.
Yet, that jump cut takes him right into another defender who takes him to the ground.
Ultimately, the Lions should feel good about what Williams offers. He doesn't have the big frame that the team lacks right now, but he has the ability to do a number of things well for the team and can be an asset as the team looks to once again perform at an elite level offensively.

Welcome to the Book Review Book Club! Every month, we select a book to discuss with our readers. Sometimes that’s a new book we’re excited about and would love to introduce you to; other times it’s an older book that’s back in the cultural spotlight. What all our selections have in common? They’re great books primed for robust, thoughtful conversations.
For September, we’re reading “The Hypocrite,” by Jo Hamya.
This month, we also have a cozy new space to talk about the book as all of us are reading (that’s this article here). We encourage you to share your thoughts and questions with us and with other readers as you go along.

We can’t wait to discuss the novel with you (and if you’d like to invite a friend to read the book with us, here’s a quick link to the club ). In the meantime, happy reading!
Write what you know, the adage goes. But what happens when what — or who — you know doesn’t like what you write?
That is the question at the center of our September selection for the Book Review Book Club: “The Hypocrite,” by Jo Hamya.
The book follows a famous English novelist as he watches a staging of a new play by his daughter, Sophia, in London. The lights go down in the theater, and immediately the novelist realizes: The play is about him, the vacation he took with Sophia a decade earlier and the sins he committed while they were away. During the show, Sophia is at lunch with her mother, dissecting their family history until she can talk with her father after the play has concluded. The story also jumps to the past, to show what really happened on that fateful father-daughter holiday.
The novel is an art monster story and a dysfunctional family saga that explores the ethics of creating work inspired by real life.

Our editor Joumana Khatib’s review of the novel: “Hamya is attuned to the precarity that young women inherit, the realization that no amount of privilege, education or artistic chops could confer the freedom or power they desire.” [ Read the full review here. ]
Hamya’s interview with Hephzibah Anderson in The Guardian: “I had a clear image suddenly of a man in a theatre, watching a play of his life, and I knew that he would disagree with everything that was happening on stage, but he couldn’t leave. I thought about it for hours that night because it was a really interesting formal challenge. Could I write something where both parties were wrong and they were both utterly sympathetic, but the reader would still — especially if they spend time on the internet — feel conscious of wanting to take sides?” [ Read the full interview here. ]
Katie Kitamura’s review, for the Book Review, of Jo Hamya’s debut novel, “Three Rooms”: “‘Three Rooms,’ like Olivia Laing’s ‘Crudo,’ Patricia Lockwood’s ‘No One Is Talking About This’ and Lauren Oyler’s ‘Fake Accounts,’ compresses the noise of contemporary life into a record of recent events: Grenfell Tower, Boris Johnson, Brexit. But personal and everyday occurrences take up equal space in the narrator’s consciousness, and are precisely and beautifully rendered.” [ Read the full review here. ]

From the past trailers, we have seen that in this game, Zelda will fight using Echoes to her advantage, allowing her to gain leverage over enemies and throw objects at them to defeat them. However, the latest five-minute trailer released on the Nintendo YouTube channel shows Zelda drawing a sword.
The trailer also showcases the world of Hyrule, which has been torn apart by mysterious Rifts that have appeared out of nowhere. These Rifts similarly took her father, the King, and Link himself . By teaming up with a mystical creature named Tri, she can jump into the Rifts and explore ways to repair the land and bring it back to its former glory.
One of the main areas, aside from Hyrule, that players will get to explore in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is the Still World. The five-minute trailer above predominantly showcases this area. Everything that gets sucked into the void becomes petrified and will eventually disappear completely if they cannot be brought back to Hyrule safely.
The Still World isn't just home to tricky platforming where Zelda will have to rely on using her Echoes to platform, but there are also ruins and dungeons to explore, with Zelda having to work her way through the puzzles below to traverse them.
Because of the various Rifts scattered through Hyrule, each Rift brings Zelda to a new part of the Still World, bringing about new exploration and defining features in each area. During her adventures, Zelda picks up a mysterious sword that allows her to utilize her swordfighter form.
By using this form, she can attack enemies directly rather than having to utilize her Echoes to do it for her, and has all of the same basic sword attacks that Link would use. She can also use a shield in this form. While she can take on enemies herself, you can also utilize her Echoes simultaneously, allowing you to take down enemies quicker by fighting them as both Zelda and the Echoes.
However, the Swordfighter form isn't permanently available. When she runs out of Energy, she will transform back into her standard form, where she relies solely on the power of Echoes to do her bidding. To be able to continue using the Swordfighter form, you have to collect Energy that will refill the gauge.
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is due for release on September 26, 2024 on Nintendo Switch.
