Origin of the name

Different theories are trying to explain the origin of the name Kericho.

One theory has it that it was home to the region's first hospital, built by the colonial British at the start of the 20th century.

A popular drug called Kerichek used to be administered in the area and locals later derived the name Kericho from the popular drug.

Others claim the town was named after a local medicine man called Kipkerich or a Maasai chief, Ole Kericho, who was killed in the 18th Century by the Abagusii.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke , Davis Langat, a resident of Kericho, said that word Kericho came from the word Kerichek to mean medicine in Kipsigis.

Langat said there was a particular place within Kericho town where traditional herbs were found.

He said people used to travel from different places to get traditional medicine from that place.

The place was later called kap kerichek to mean where the medicine was found.

"The place later became centre and people built houses, conducted business and it evolved slowly to become a big town now Kericho town," he said.

Kericho serves as the headquarters of Kericho county with six sub-counties, including Bureti, Belgut, Ainamoi, Soin/ Sigowet, Kipkelion East, and Kipkelion West.

Home of best tea

To many Kenyans, the name Kericho is synonymous with tea. Although there are many brands of tea on the Kenyan market, consumers have over the years embraced tea products from Kericho town and often associate it with quality, originality and freshness.

The town's strategic location and conducive weather conditions have also contributed to its massive growth in the recent past.

Kericho – Quaint Tea Town Tucked in Kenya’s Western Highlands

A guest blog by Brenda Kipkemoi

Kericho tea farms

Are you looking for an off-the-beaten-track Kenyan destination to visit? Then why not try Kericho.

Kericho isn’t your everyday tourist destination, and indeed it isn’t much talked about on Kenya’s western tourist circuit. Tucked in the tea highlands south-west of Kenya’s Rift Valley, this quaint and picturesque farming town with perennial rainfall, dubbed “God’s bathroom” has a peaceful appeal that strangely grows on you.

Expect a five hours’ drive from Nairobi and 90 minutes’ drive from Nakuru, branching off to the Kisumu-Busia Road (B1) at Mau Summit, off the main A104 Nakuru – Eldoret Highway. Alternatively, you can fly to Kisumu International Airport from Nairobi on Kenya Airways, Jambo Jet, or Fly 540, and then drive the 1-hour trip the rest of the way.

So, why haven’t we heard more about Kericho on Kenya’s inventory of notable tourist destinations? And is it worth a visit?

Video: Kericho Tea Highlands

Both the national and county authorities need to redouble their efforts to market and support tourist-centred activities in the County. After reading this guide, we hope you’ll find that there’s plenty to do in this beguiling Kenyan highland town, perfect for a little bit of out-of-town R&R.

Where to Eat in Kericho: Aubergine Restaurant

Aubergine Restaurant

Founded in 2018, Aubergine Restaurant located on the first floor of Green Square Mall came onto the Kericho dining scene with a bang.

This owner-operated restaurant is the brainchild of husband-and-wife team Ben and Ruth Magolo. Victor Owino, former Boma Inn food and beverage service manager runs the front-of-house with strict professionalism and grace.

Ben, a protégé of renowned British chef Luke Doig , has worked in some of Kenya’s best restaurants including Mutamaiyu House on the Mugie Conservancy , Muthaiga Country Club , and the Almanara Luxury Resort in Diani.

Aubergine Restaurant

Here, the food is honest and intelligent, focused on using only the freshest and locally available ingredients. A quick look at the menu confirms this philosophy. There’s an assortment of starters to choose like the signature Smoked Salmon, and Beef Capaccio, as well as a variety of salads, soups, and sandwiches.

Seafood comes in fresh daily from Kenya’s coast using refrigerated transport to give us sublime dishes such as Swahili coconut Fish, and Chilli Prawns. At the same time, the local organic beef sourced from the farms around Kericho yields a delicious and flavorful Kericho Beef Fillet dish.

If you prefer casual dining, Aubergine also offers an extensive pizza menu.

To accompany your meal, enjoy a selection of excellent reds and whites, and to finish, the desserts and cakes on offer as well as the espresso-based drinks are well worth trying.

As pricing goes, Aubergine Restaurant offers real value for money. Expect to pay about KES 500 for a starter, and between KES 700 – 1100 for the main meal. A glass of wine comes in at KES 400, coffee at KES 250, and the ubiquitous Kericho teapot at KES 150.

Where to Sleep in Kericho: Saramek Villa Inn

Saramek Inn Kericho

Excellent accommodation in Kericho is, unfortunately, hard to find.

With the decline of a previously good quality hotel in the town, and the need to show a marriage licence at check-in no less in another, it can be hard to find a decent place to put down your head for the night.

Saramek Villa Inn breaks the mould and has managed to convert a residential house on one-acre grounds into an intimate and delightful boutique hotel, set in peaceful, manicured gardens in the heart of town.

This establishment is owned and run by the lovely Fifie Koske, who honed her craft in Australia. Fiona is a trained chef and hospitality professional. She’s the inspiration for many dishes on the a-la-carte menu.

Saramek Inn Interior

There are six rooms in this small guesthouse, ranging from Standard at KES 5500, Deluxe at KES 7500, and Superior Deluxe at KES 8500 per night. Prices include a full English or Continental breakfast and vary according to seasonal and non-resident rates; it’s best to call ahead and confirm availability and the price before booking a room.

The all en-suite rooms are well-appointed, comfortable, and furnished in bespoke, handmade furniture with beautiful and thick drapery. All bedrooms are carpeted to keep out the cold that’s a fixture all-year-round, and come with hot water, a bath, clean white towels, writing desk, ample clothes cupboards, and vanity table and mirror as standard.

Saramek Villa Inn also provides an in-room complimentary coffee and tea service as well as satellite TV.

There’s a private bar on the premises (far enough from the rooms to ensure undisturbed sleep) and a resident’s lounge with a real fireplace, in which to relax. Thankfully, there’s also outdoor seating for those sunny days where only outdoor dining will do and plenty of parking with ample security for the ultimate convenience.

Saramek Villa Inn has set the standards for accommodation in Kericho. We’d highly recommend you sleep nowhere else when in town as really, nowhere else matches the Inn’s hig standards.

Chagaik Arboretum

kericho nature

One of the splendours of Kericho is how unspoiled and beautiful the nature trails are.

Chagaik Arboretum is a peaceful an enclave of tropical jungle, full of indigenous tree species and beautiful picnic grounds surrounded by tea plantations.

The arboretum was established after the Second World War and is situated eight kilometres from Kericho town along the Nakuru-Kericho-Kisumu Highway. Visitors to the site will need to drive a few metres on a murram road, through tea plantations and in through a gate that ushers you into the picnic grounds.

The site is perfect on sunny days where you can picnic the hours away in the company of friends in serene surroundings. There are plenty of lush gardens with enough room for children to enjoy outdoor activities.

At the bottom of the grounds, there’s a small dam framed by age-old bamboo trees. This spot is perfect for bird watchers, entomologists, and also a reliable place for the best of local wildlife, notably Colobus monkeys.

Another of Kericho’s most picturesque sites is Chesumot Tea Farm located approximately 10 kilometres to Kericho town on the Nakuru-Kericho-Kisumu Highway.

The entrance to the farm is to the left of Kaisugu Tea Factory on a dirt track that leads past beautiful tea plantations to the main entrance gate of the estate.

Chesumot Tea Farm is a fantastic camping and fishing site. There is an artificial dam that is perfect for trout fishing and canoeing. Although there are no eateries on-site, visitors are allowed to bring their food and cooking supplies. You can also enjoy horse riding, cycling, photography, marathons, bird watching, and bonfires in this beautiful, unspoiled location.

Where to Learn About Tea Processing: Kaisugu Tea Factory

kericho tea farm

Tea estates are to Kericho what beaches are to Mombasa – without them, there is no Kericho.

Kaisugu Tea is a homegrown tea processing factory, owned by the African Gospel and African Inland Churches, in partnership with the family of Kenya’s second President H.E. Daniel Arap Moi.

They are incredibly accommodating to visitors and, arranged in advance, can offer free factory tours to small groups. Avoid end month tours, though, as staff are usually frantic with stock takes and other administrative duties. It’s also best to call once you arrive in the town, as tours may not be available all of the time.

Learn about how tea leaves are received and graded from the small scale out-growers, dried, and transformed into Kenya’s world-class loose leaf tea. Tea is also available for sale at the factory’s outlet.

Getting Around

Kericho is a small town. Public transport is virtually non-existent and most people without cars cab it.

Uber and Bolt are unavailable but local rider apps Rafiki and Wasili operate in the area. These cabs are affordable and clean – town service shouldn’t cost you more than KES 150. Besides, they are safer and are more convenient, with the nearest driver picking you from your location 24 hours a day.

Download Rafiki for Android , and Wasili for Android and iOS devices before you go.

Kericho is undoubtedly one of Kenya’s most beautiful destinations. It has a vibrant local history, mild weather, stunning wildlife, and friendly people.

While not all social amenities are available, the old world charm of the town more than makes up for this. The food is organic and to die for, and the serene environment is perfect if you need to get away from it all and recharge your batteries.

Try to squeeze in Kericho into your schedule this year; you never know it just may grow on you.

A Review of Chesumot Tea Farm Campsite, Kericho

Every time you are travelling on the B1 Nakuru – Kisumu highway heading to Kisumu Dala, Kericho has always been the highlight of the trip. The never-ending green tea fields, how they are well-shaped are just beautiful and peaceful to look at, the fields are pieces of art.

Of hidden gems, lies this beautiful space in the heart of Kericho, Chesumot Farm. The farm lies in Chesumot Tea Estate, approximately 10km from Kericho town on the B1 Nakuru-Kericho-Kisumu Highway.

You can also opt for the longer, but more scenic route to Kericho via Bomet along the south of the Mau Forest. It’s an extra 50-odd kilometres, but offers a diversity of landscapes, particularly around Narok where the wheat fields are littered with drooping acacias. If you’re heading in this direction, Chesumot Farm is just over 10 kilometres beyond Kericho town, and to the left at the Kaisugu Taidys restaurant. From here, follow the dirt track through the neat rows of tea bushes until you reach the main gate of the estate.

At the heart of the 1,500-acre farm is a small dam, surrounded by vast green swathes of tea bushes. Chesumot Farm produces a variety of teas, including green and purple tea – popular in Japan. A large portion of the estate is covered in purple tea bushes.

You can visit Chesumot Farm for just a day or stay there. Your stay in Chesumot is farm life, the British farm life. You are surrounded by tea bushes, man-made forests and animals. You go to sleep to cricket chirps, slumber in dreamland to nature’s awkward silence with occasional gentle zephyr whistling through the leaves and wake up to the sounds of birds chirping.

green assignment company ltd kericho

For those who shudder at the thought of swimming, cycling and running at high altitudes, Chesumot Farm still has plenty to offer. Overlooking the dam, within a thicket of Dracaena and Indian Ash trees, is a very well-situated campsite. You have to bring your tent, but there are hot showers and a sit-down toilet At the bottom of the campsite, by the dam, are two open rondavels, with electricity supplied by solar panels. These lead to a long wooden jetty, which extends out to the middle of the dam. Those who don’t want to swim can take their pick of two canoes, or a rowing boat moored to the jetty.

green assignment company ltd kericho

In the evenings, you could also take a horse ride around the farm (or walk) as you enjoy some bird-watching, the amazing landscapes and even watch the tea pickers slide their harvesting machines over the top of the tea bushes or visit the nearby the Kaisugu Tea Factory. Movement around the estate is to a minimum, so be assured to enjoy some stillness and quietness.

Chesumot Farm Accommodation

You can either stay at the Chesumot Farm Estate House or camp near the dam where a proper campsite has been prepared. The campsite is under some lovely trees. You have to bring your tent, but there are hot showers and a sit-down toilet for the campers. There are also two rondavels and a fire pit where you could sit and read your book.

The house is close to the main gate – A spacious four-bedroom house that accommodates up to 6 people. The house can be rented for $120  a night via Airbnb or by calling the management. Camping costs $10 per person.

Chesumot Farm Contacts

To book, get in touch with Kim on 0722 741 879

Email: [email protected] .

NOTE: The dam at Chesumot Farm just makes the stay even more breathtaking, with a beautiful wooden dock, perfect for those Olympic dives. The place has a boat where you can fish the whole day if you are into kayaking. It’s just perfect for an afternoon choma by the dock.

Kericho Gold

Bold and imaginative market decisions have taken Kericho Gold to the top of Kenya’s tea market, and the brand is now looking for a breakthrough in the UK and Europe

Aman without tea in him is incapable of understanding truth and beauty’ according to the famous quote by Okakura Kakuzo – the venerable Japanese scholar, known in the Western world as the author of the long essay The Book of Tea. Sure, the habit of drinking tea may not be as popular today, as it was a century ago, when Kakuzo published his work, but perhaps the very charm of tea drinking in the 21st century resides precisely in the proud preservation of this fine tradition, albeit on a smaller scale, making it somewhat special and exclusive occasion.

Notwithstanding, Kericho Gold does not think small in any way. The Kenyan brand was launched in 2002 by Gold Crown Beverages, and today it has a market share of more than 75 per cent in the Premium Tea market segment in the Eastern African country, despite the fierce competition it has faced. “Indeed, one of our greatest assets is our NPD (new product development) programme, which ensures that we have new products in the market at least twice a year,” says Fahim Ahmed, Managing Director of Kericho Gold, reiterating business’ philosophy to always look for improvement and growth.

The aggressive business development has seen the brand exported to 19 countries, including the USA, Australia, South Korea, China, South Africa, Norway, and Saudi Arabia. Fahim reveals the company’s plans to increase its international presence: “We will be targeting the UK and some EU countries this year with our Attitude Teas, Fruit & Herbal Infusions, and Pyramid ranges. We have also recently appointed a distributor in Finland and we expect the first listings in October 2018. As a regular participator in food shows and exhibitions, we recently visited FOODEX JAPAN, where we were able to identify a distributor and we hope to finalise the agreement shortly.”

Track record

Having started only with the offering of black tea, Kericho Gold soon began adding new products to its expanding catalogue, including green tea, as well as the abovementioned ranges of flavoured black and green teas, called Attitude Teas, the Fruit and Herbal Infusions, the Health & Wellness range, and the most recently launched Pyramid category. The Attitude Teas range has gone on to become a huge success among millennials, who are its target market. “Tea consumption among the young was in sharp decline, as tea was seen as something that only the elderly enjoy, with coffee being the beverage of choice for the youngsters. We managed to change all that and now the attributes of each flavour from Attitude Teas is hotly debated on social media,” Fahim reports.

The innovative approach Kericho Gold has taken with the introduction of Attitude Teas was not a precedent for the brand. The business has a proven track record of launching products that have never been sold in Kenya before. One such example is the Fruit & Herbal Infusions range some seven years ago. “When we first attempted that,” Fahim recollects, “a buyer from the largest supermarket chain in Kenya said that it was not going to work, because Kenyans only drank black tea. Our counterargument was that they only had black tea, because there were no other options for them to choose from, which, to us, meant that there was a potential customer base of 48 million people for the new range. Since then, sales have grown at an average of 70 per cent year-on-year.

“Similarly, we were the first company to launch the Pyramid range in Kenya, thus offering Kenyans non-Kenyan teas for the first time. It is a very upmarket range, retailing in the country at about 75p per teabag, and is now selling fast in supermarkets in the wealthier suburbs of Nairobi.” The international teas Kericho Gold lists include handmade Sencha (Japan), Spiced Rooibos (South Africa), Camomile flowers (Croatia), Peppermint (Egypt), as well as teas from Ceylon and Rwanda.

Premium quality

When all is said and done, however wide the range, if the actual tea is not of the highest quality, it cannot possibly be so successful, and those engaged with creating Kericho Gold teas know that perfectly well. “We do not compromise on quality of ingredients. No amount of money spent on TV advertisements or billboards can get you a repeat purchase if the quality of tea is below par,” Fahim explains, maintaining that the only way to guarantee that the customer will buy again is to make the product really stand out. “Take the standard Black Teas, for example. We put in painstaking efforts to create a blend from the best teas grown in Kenya, and ensure the consistency of taste day after day, year after year.”

Kenyan tea has been praised as one of the best in the world and Fahim tries to enlighten us on why this is so: “Unlike other parts of the world where plantations suffer from pest infestations, and therefore require a heavy use of pesticides, Kenya’s tea growing areas are blessed, and there have been no reported incidents of pest infestation across our tea farms. Kenyan teas are also special for another reason. They are high in antioxidants due to their slow growth, as tea is grown in high altitudes, between 1800 and 2300 metres above sea level.”

To keep its promise to constantly offer new innovative products, Kericho Gold is going to refresh its assortment over the course of 2018. “A whole new range of loose leaf teas is on its way, as well as a small Travel Pack, which can be easily slipped into a briefcase or a travel bag for those who cannot go without Kericho Gold when they travel,” Fahim smiles. The company is also in the process of building its new factory, an investment of just under £12 million. “It will be solar-powered, and is designed to have an efficient flow, thus minimising bottlenecks in the production process, something so many factories are plagued with, because they were not purpose-built,” Fahim reasons.

Finally, Kericho Gold has a very clear idea of how it wants to raise brand awareness with a series of PR activities. “We are very active on social media, we take part in food shows all over the world, and we sponsor a breakfast show, hosted by a celebrity chef on a popular TV channel in Kenya, who also airs on Cake World TV. The show is produced by Food Time Television Ltd in Virginia, the USA, so we aim to get the brand out as much as possible,” Fahim concludes. Kericho Gold looks set to be brewing up a successful future.

  • Green Square Mall is the biggest mall in Kericho
  • The project, which was completed in 2016, is estimated to be worth Ksh500 million

Kericho County is one of the most picturesque destinations in Kenya.

As far as the eye can see, the county´s verdant countryside is dotted with hilltops and vast tea plantations. READ FULL STORY

It is therefore not a coincidence that Kericho is home to some of the oldest tea companies in Kenya, the likes of James Finlay , Kenya Tea Packers Limited, Unilever Kenya, and Williamson.

Kericho town is located along a busy highway connecting the Nyanza region to the provinces of Nairobi and Central, making it a major transit point for passengers and cargo to Uganda.

However, for a long time, Kericho residents had to travel to Nakuru, Eldoret, or Nairobi to access rare household items or enjoy a coffee cafe lifestyle and eateries.

This was the county’s situation until 2014 when the town got one of its biggest shopping complexes with the construction of Green Square Mall.

In this article, WoK takes a look at the ownership and features of the mall.

One stop shop

Green Square Mall is located along the Nairobi-Kisumu highway and is comprised of about 20 shops on three floors.

Submit your story

The project, which was completed in 2016, was estimated to be worth Ksh500 million and was financed by the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB).

The Mall ́s developers said they constructed the mall to target Kericho’s growing middle class and customers who pass through the town.

According to Chris Ngéno, who directed the mall’s development operations, the mall was intended as a one-stop-shop that would suit all family needs for both customers and travelers along the road to dine, shop, bank, and relax, all under one roof.

Green Square Mall: Ownership And Features Of Kericho's Biggest Shopping Complex

Kericho county officials added that the demand for modern shopping facilities was driven by the growth of industries in the region, expansion by companies, universities opening campuses, and NGOs settling in the community.

Even before its completion, former giant retailer Nakumatt had confirmed it would be the main tenant in the mall.

The project was managed by Limojade Management Ltd, who were behind Sahara Ridge Estate in Ruiru and at one time managed 717 Brookside Apartments in Westlands, Riversedge, and Redhill, among other projects.

The Mall´s letting agent was Dunhill Consulting Limited, who are also the letting agents of Thika Road Mall (TRM).

However, a company by the name of Green Square Limited was among 19 landlords who sued Nakumatt in 2017 on behalf of Green Square Mall over rent arrears amounting to Ksh 22 million.

Today, Green Square Mall has a traffic of between 3000 and 3900 people walking in daily, depending on whether it’s on a weekend or a weekday.

Inside, you will find a number of business categories, ranging from retail shops, Financial, Beauty & Grooming, Travel Agencies, Restaurants & Clubs, Coffee Shops, Electronics & Mobile Phones, and Fashion among other diverse categories.

It boasts ample secure parking of up to 135 spaces located in a well-aerated basement and a secure rooftop accessed conveniently via lifts to all floors or through the ground to a rooftop drive-through ramp.

The mall is one of the most modern buildings in Kericho. According to Smart Investor, it was designed by Kenyan architects.

Aside from Green Square Mall, the other prime shopping destination in Kericho is the Simba Gate Mall, a beautifully landscaped building situated within the Kericho town CBD.

Kenya’s Newest Sugar Factory Sets Turnaround Time Record

NCBA reveals it financed Sh3 billion West Valley Sugar miller owned by Kipchimchim Group in Kericho County

BT Reporter

NCBA Group has reaffirmed its quest to grow Kenya’s industrial sector and sustainable development of communities. The banking group made the commitment during a tour led by NCBA Kenya Chairman, Isaac Awuondo, and Group Managing Director, John Gachora, at the recently inaugurated West Valley Sugar Factory in Kericho County, which was constructed in a record time of just over one year.

The West Valley Sugar Factory (WEVAS), owned by the West Valley Sugar Company, a subsidiary of the Kipchimchim Group of Companies, is a result of a collaborative effort and strategic partnership. The factory, located in Kericho County, marks a significant milestone in the region’s economic landscape, with its parent company also operating the renowned Kipchimatt Supermarkets.

In 2022, NCBA financed the establishment of the Ksh3 billion sugar milling plant which has employed over 600 locals. Through the partnership, it took a record 14 months to complete operationalization of the West Valley Sugar Company Limited which is faster compared to the two years it takes operationalize a factory.

The company has been operational for two months and has since employed over 600 locals in the factory driving the local economy and providing essential services that have a multiplier effect on the region.

The company produces 2,200 bags of 50kg sugar daily. Beyond industrial achievements, the Kipchimchim Group of Companies, led by Group Managing Director Bernard Soi, emphasized the need to prioritize community empowerment.

During the tour, NCBA Group Managing Director John Gachora emphasized the critical role of partnerships in driving progress and growth, acknowledging NCBA’s instrumental role as the financial partner in establishing the West Valley Sugar Factory. “Our spirit of partnership fuels collaborative growth. Our involvement in the establishment of the West Valley Sugar Factory was a strategic partnership aligned with our shared vision of fostering economic growth and sustainable development,” Mr Gachora said.

West Valley Sugar Company

Through its collective spirit and collaboration, Mr Gachora said NCBA Group has created a legacy that fosters development and contributes to economic growth by creating job opportunities, stimulating support businesses and enhancing the overall economic ecosystem in the South Rift region.

“We offer community initiatives that encompass comprehensive agricultural training, sustainable farming practices, and access to quality fertilizers, alongside educational programs focusing on renewable energy sources,” said Mr Soi, the West Valley Sugar Factory MD . “Our commitment extends to innovative solutions like utilizing bagasse to power homes.”

Furthermore, the Kipchimchim Group’s dedication to sustainability aligns with NCBA’s  agenda. The company uses Green Energy generated from Bagasse. It generates 3 megawatts of power through bagasse recycling, using only 2 megawatts of this to power the factory.

In honour of the late founding chairman, Mr Samuel Ngetich, the bank planted 10 trees jointly during the event and donated 1,000 seedlings to the company for onward distribution to the community.

This strategic collaboration between NCBA and the Kipchimchim Group of Companies stands as a beacon of progress, illustrating the transformative power of partnership in fostering industrial growth and community development.
