MSc Project Management Personal Statement Example

I am applying for a place in your university’s project management degree programme, and I hope you will kindly accept my MSc project management personal statement.

I am very interested in the topics covered in the course. My interest in these areas was first aroused during my undergraduate studies at Queen Mary University London, where I studied BSc Financial Management.

Your course covers the above topic and will introduce me to new areas of project management, which will broaden my knowledge and understanding. I achieved a high 2.1 grade on my undergraduate degree and am keen to build on my interest in project management. I believe that my 2.1 grade has demonstrated my academic ability to study at the master’s level.

My work placement, organised by graduate advantage two years ago, reinforced my interest in industrial research, and I could experience the effects of applying business intelligence in a business environment.

My primary role was to develop and upgrade the database using financial analysis and SQL tools while supporting the CEO and promoting the company’s e-business.

I wrote a report on NHS white paper, and my findings were well received by my organisation and published in the company’s monthly bulletin. This experience helped me to develop relevant skills in constructing questionnaires, managing my time effectively and writing succinctly.

I am particularly keen to study at your university simply because of your reputation for excellence. You are known for your world-class teaching quality and strong links to industry, government and commerce. Your reputation attracts various students, and I believe it will be a stimulating environment to study at the master’s level.

Your university also provides excellent working and recreation facilities for graduate students, which demonstrates your commitment to the graduate student body. Following the MSc course, I would like to pursue my interest in a research programme in the form of either DBA or PhD.

I hope to get a place in your programme, and please consider my project management personal statement in support of my application.

Sample Project Management Personal Statement (UT Austin)

personal statement for project management major

by Talha Omer, M.Eng., Cornell Grad

In personal statement samples by field.

The following essay was written by an applicant admitted to UT Austin’s Construction Engineering and Project Management program with 75% scholarship on tuition fee.

With over three years of work experience in a civil engineering and design firm, the applicant currently works with AECOM, a top infrastructure consulting firm. This essay will help you get some ideas on how to draft a great personal statement for a top graduate school like UT Austin.

Sample Personal Statement UT Austin in Project Management

I belong to a family of civil engineers. I have been observing the affiliation of my father and elder brother with construction activities since I was a kid, so it was only natural for me to get into this field. After completing my bachelor’s in civil engineering, I secured a job in the government sector. However, as I write this statement while concatenating my undergraduate studies with fifteen months of hands-on experience in construction management, I realize that the higher education system of my country lacks focus on academics and research in construction engineering and project management. Also, there are few or no opportunities to build a comprehensive skill set as a construction management professional. Therefore, I wish to pursue my higher studies in Construction Engineering and Project Management at the University of Texas at Austin.

My four years in undergraduate studies opened a whole new world to me, just as exciting as I had imagined. My favorite course was “Construction Management.” Through this course, I learned the fundamentals of how construction projects are managed top down during the feasibility, design, execution, and commissioning phases. I also learned how materials, manpower, and machinery are managed efficiently without compromising the quality, safety, and environment. However, because there were no faculty members with a doctorate in management studies, the research interests of my school were focused only on structures, geo-tech, and hydraulics. Therefore, I could not quench my curiosity to explore this domain beyond the course contents by pursuing my final year of research in construction management.

Soon after my graduation, my good grades and leadership experience enabled me to be in the top 5% of the graduating class. As a result, I received a job offer in a prestigious government department. In the government sector, I was hired by South Korean consultants for the project management of a state-of-the-art kidney and liver institute in the heart of the country. It is a 1500-bed hospital, research center, and medical university spread over 100 hectares. This opportunity of working with Korean colleagues enabled me to learn construction management from the viewpoint of two contrasting construction industries. My South Korean colleagues used to discuss with me at length how various practices are done differently and more efficiently in South Korea than in my country. As an assistant engineer, I worked on assignments ranging from scheduling, costing, safety, and quality control under the guidance of a veteran in hospital construction – Mr. B. H. Lee.

Working with the Project Management Consultants (P.M.C.), I had the opportunity to practice and learn project management skills in a true sense. I prepared the standard formats and operating procedures for collecting progress data from all stakeholders. I identified the Key Performance Indicators, which were understandable even for non-technical people. The compiled progress reports were, in turn, presented to the top management, including the Heads of the States. I also prepared a comprehensive documentation control guideline for the quality control of the project. Although I had no prior knowledge of all the types of documents that would ever be produced in the project, I managed to identify them by holding extensive meetings with the consultants, contractors, and stakeholders in the government.

The guidelines I prepared also included the documents’ standard formats and operating procedures. The Chief Operating Officer appreciated my achievements and gradually implemented the same systems on all succeeding projects. I also assisted the Korean head of the H.S.E. department in his motto of “planting the safety tree.” We conducted regular training and workshops and developed a proper system of punishment and reward as a motivation for labor to follow the H.S.E. rules. We also developed an environmental monitoring and mitigation program. Together we were able to complete 1 million safe man hours, which was unique in the construction practices of the country. During his monthly site visit, the Head of the State highly appreciated our H.S.E. team on this achievement.

Upon the yearly performance evaluation, I was handpicked and promoted by the Chief Operating Officer to work as Project Coordinator for Recep Tayyip Erdogan Hospital (RTEH) Expansion Project – a teaching hospital spread on 113 acres situated in a remote district of the state. Here, I worked closely with the Project Director to ensure proper coordination between more than 20 stakeholders of this project. These stakeholders included government departments, clients, consultants, contractors, and vendors. Initially, I had to face multiple challenges as the S.O.P.s for the flow of information were not clearly defined. Therefore, I used the skills I had learned in my previous project to streamline the flow of information between all stakeholders. While working on this project, I also learned contract administration. I was responsible for checking and processing interim payments, variation orders, extension of time requests, and descoping of a contract while ensuring compliance with the conditions of the contract.

Although I garnered extensive knowledge related to construction engineering and project management in these projects, I had to improvise a lot because of a lack of proper background in project management and a lack of information on the international best practices and standards developed for these purposes. Through the Construction Engineering and Project Management program at the University of Texas at Austin, I will be able to overcome the shortcomings in my undergraduate studies and professional experience. The program offers diverse courses that would help me bridge the gap in my professional experience and the construction practices in the U.S.A. For example, the courses “Project Information Management Systems” and “Project Controls” would help me build on my knowledge. In addition, being a “Longhorn Engineer” will allow me to learn from the best in the business – the top industry practitioners and professors with numerous breakthroughs in research and patents.

UT Austin offers an opportunity to its student to gain research experience on real-life projects. Therefore, I will be able to learn not only technical aspects of construction engineering but also the much-in-demand project management skills. Also, I was a member of the debating club of my undergraduate school and won numerous accolades for my institute. Thus, my stay at UT Austin will be an opportunity for me to discover the multicultural American society and learn the values of tolerance and generosity. Moreover, I will avidly represent my country as a country full of colors and joys compared to what is reflected in the international media.

With its vibrant culture and sunny, temperate climate, Austin is among the most desirable cities. Studying at Austin would allow me to connect with and learn from construction industry leaders. UT Austin admits scholars from around the world. It provides its students with an opportunity for networking, professional learning, and exposure to the construction practices of various parts of the world. I will be able to learn not only from highly qualified professors but also from my peers coming from diverse backgrounds. UT Austin is rightly referred to as a “Public Ivy” because of the vast opportunities it provides to its students.

After completing my degree, I plan to work with my current employer. Being in the government department will enable me to enforce the international best practices learned from my graduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin. In addition, one of the General Managers at my organization has a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from C.E.E., Stanford University. He has combined the knowledge gained from Stanford with the authority he was given as the head of the Engineering & Planning wing of a government department to revolutionize structure design practices. I wish to follow him in his footsteps and bring a change to the predominantly orthodox and outdated construction practices.

After all, “what starts at UT Austin changes the world.” I also dream of starting short courses in various construction engineering and project management skills for professionals. The best benefit of American education is that you get that entrepreneurial confidence in taking the initiative to apply what you have learned in your way. Therefore, in the long term, I wish to start an independent PMO (Project Management Office) for consultation with my father and elder brother. It will solve problems faced by construction projects throughout the country on demand. I am confident that a Master’s degree in Construction Engineering and Project Management from the University of Texas at Austin will fulfill my dreams and aspirations.

Project Management Postgraduate Personal Statement

Example Project Management Postgraduate Personal Statement

Over the course of my professional life, I have become increasingly involved in project management roles. Doing so has made me aware of the many varied challenges that can face projects and the project managers who are charged with bringing them through to completion. The success or failure of projects, in whatever economic, political or social field, rests not just on the quality of the project’s goals, but also on the abilities of those involved in the project – and above all those who are managing it – to bring it to successful completion. To do this, project managers need to be equipped with a very wide range of skills, many of which are unrelated to the type of project itself. So, for example, a project manager of an engineering project must not only have engineering expertise and experience, but also possess management skills in areas such as budgeting and financial management, operations, personnel and information systems. In many cases, projects fail because they are led by people who lack these skills.

I have very much enjoyed the challenges of working in a project management position in the past, and intend to work in this area in the future. I am committed to developing my professional skills to allow me to work to the fullest of my potential, and as a consequence I am highly motivated to study for an MSc in Project Management. I believe that it is essential for project managers to be equipped with the skills that are necessary to allow ambitious projects to be completed on budget, on time, and according to their original specifications, and I believe that completing this master’s is the best way to acquire those skills.

To help me with my career goal of working in a project management position, I have already taken steps to boost my project management skills through self-study. I regularly read books on the subject of project management, and also like to read about the development of important projects in the news. During the course of working in project management roles in the past I attended short workshops and training courses to help me in my role. At present I am also studying towards the examination to obtain the Project Management Institute’s Project Management Professional status.

I am excited about the prospect of returning to higher education and completing a master’s to the best of my abilities. I enjoyed completing my BSc in Mechanical Engineering, and I believe that the results that I obtained in it demonstrate that I have the abilities and the drive that are necessary to succeed at university. Furthermore, in addition to learning as much as possible about project management prior to beginning the course, I have also been working hard to improve my level of English, and am currently taking an English course at Salford University.

I believe that my professional history demonstrates that I have a solid grasp of the demands of project management, and through working in a project management role in the past I have begun to develop many of the skills that are necessary for a project management role. After qualifying as a mechanical engineer, I held two different engineering-related positions in the Saudi armed forces, before moving on in 2005 to work as a project coordinator at the Alsalam Aircraft Company. In this role I was responsible for managing a range of construction projects carried out for the Royal Saudi Air Force, ranging from new building projects to the installation of sewage systems and water piping. I believe that being placed in this role brought out some of my best professional qualities, such as my ability to learn quickly, to deal with people honestly, to pay attention to details and to quickly formulate solutions to unforeseen problems. After holding this post for three years, my skills as a project manager were further developed in my next position, at the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities. This role was a step outside of the engineering field, and the fact that I was able to succeed in this role has given me faith in my adaptability. In this role I was responsible for projects that were designed to develop Saudi Arabia’s heritage sites and boost tourism to the country. During my two-and-a-half year tenure at the Commission I was involved in a range of projects that were completed successfully, such as the creation of a provincial tourism body for the Al-Jouf region. The quality of my performance in this role is also demonstrated by the fact that I received the Distinguished Employee of the Year Award for 2009.

In spite of past successes in a project management role, however, I refuse to be lulled into a sense of complacency. I am eager to learn as much as possible about project management to excel in this sector in the future. If accepted to the master’s programme, upon its completion I would like to continue to enhance and broaden my professional skillset through working as a project manager for a construction company, a sector in which I am interested in part as a result of my involvement with helping friends and relatives in the construction of their own homes.

We hope this example Project Management Postgraduate Personal Statement is useful as a guide to help you write an interesting personal statement.

How to Write a Strong Personal Statement

  • Ruth Gotian
  • Ushma S. Neill

personal statement for project management major

A few adjustments can get your application noticed.

Whether applying for a summer internship, a professional development opportunity, such as a Fulbright, an executive MBA program, or a senior leadership development course, a personal statement threads the ideas of your CV, and is longer and has a different tone and purpose than a traditional cover letter. A few adjustments to your personal statement can get your application noticed by the reviewer.

  • Make sure you’re writing what they want to hear. Most organizations that offer a fellowship or internship are using the experience as a pipeline: It’s smart to spend 10 weeks and $15,000 on someone before committing five years and $300,000. Rarely are the organizations being charitable or altruistic, so align your stated goals with theirs
  • Know when to bury the lead, and when to get to the point. It’s hard to paint a picture and explain your motivations in 200 words, but if you have two pages, give the reader a story arc or ease into your point by setting the scene.
  • Recognize that the reviewer will be reading your statement subjectively, meaning you’re being assessed on unknowable criteria. Most people on evaluation committees are reading for whether or not you’re interesting. Stated differently, do they want to go out to dinner with you to hear more? Write it so that the person reading it wants to hear more.
  • Address the elephant in the room (if there is one). Maybe your grades weren’t great in core courses, or perhaps you’ve never worked in the field you’re applying to. Make sure to address the deficiency rather than hoping the reader ignores it because they won’t. A few sentences suffice. Deficiencies do not need to be the cornerstone of the application.

At multiple points in your life, you will need to take action to transition from where you are to where you want to be. This process is layered and time-consuming, and getting yourself to stand out among the masses is an arduous but not impossible task. Having a polished resume that explains what you’ve done is the common first step. But, when an application asks for it, a personal statement can add color and depth to your list of accomplishments. It moves you from a one-dimensional indistinguishable candidate to someone with drive, interest, and nuance.

How you’re taught

Teaching and Learning

Nottingham Business School adopts a distinctive approach to the design of student learning opportunities. Your learning is structured around theory, practice, experience & observation, and reflection & improvement. At each level (course, module and session), you will study different theories, concepts and approaches and be given opportunities to apply these in a range of practical settings. The aim is to enhance your understanding through the direct experience of business, where you will have opportunities to observe business practices and behaviours (including your own) and analyse these using theoretical knowledge. It is our intention that by reflecting on these experiences, you will be able to use these theories to guide your actions and decisions in a business context or even consider how a theory itself might be improved. In this way, we aim to enhance the quality of your learning.

You'll also use our virtual learning environment, which is a flexible web-based system that gives you 24-hour access to module learning materials and allows you to submit coursework electronically from anywhere in the world.

Academic Mentors

Every postgraduate student will be allocated an Academic Mentor at the beginning of the academic year and you will meet with them regularly throughout the year. Academic Mentors help you make the most of your time at NTU. They will support you in developing and enhancing the qualities and transferrable skills necessary for your studies, career progression, professional and personal development.

Assessments

A range of assessment methods are used across the course, the choice of which reflects the needs and demands of the different types of module. Some modules will assess the ability to work collaboratively in a team and others will assess individual capability. Types of assessment will range from examinations to group presentations including essays, reports, financial analyses, literature reviews and research based projects.

The interactive nature of the taught sessions offers opportunities to gain feedback on your performance before being formally assessed and increasing use is made of eLearning to further support the feedback process.

In-sessional English language support

In-sessional English language classes are offered to international students at no extra cost. The classes aim to provide focused support in the skills you need in order to develop your English in your subject area.

Whether talking about a recent news story, how you meet targets in your weekend job, or simply why you want to study business at uni, that spark of genuine motivation and enthusiasm will get you noticed. That's what business admissions tutors told us when we asked them what they look for – and here are some more of their top tips.

Find out everything you need to know about writing your personal statement , including how to write a killer opening and our top tips.

A spot-on business personal statement – in a nutshell

Dr Pam Croney, admissions tutor at Newcastle Business School at Northumbria University, is especially looking for evidence of:

  • an independent learner
  • a thinker and doer
  • an innovator or potential entrepreneur
  • a good communicator who likes giving presentations
  • an interest in what's happening out there in the business world

Can you demonstrate any of these?

She also likes it when applicants give their own views on a topical issue, like why you think a particular company crashed, what sparked the revival of a vintage brand, or whatever else gets you fired up. Admissions tutors love to know what you’re genuinely enthusiastic about!

What business and management tutors are looking for

  • Structure and organisation: to study management, you need to demonstrate that you are capable of managing yourself. Your personal statement needs to be structured, organised, and free of spelling or grammatical errors.
  • First impressions count: Sue Blything-Smith, Business and Management Admissions Tutor from University Campus Suffolk, says 'you should aim to be unique and original and provide a good opening line that reveals something about your aptitude and enthusiasm’. She really likes to see statements that demonstrate personality and flair but don't go too over the top: keep it formal and remain objective.
  • Examples of your relevant skills: Sue is also impressed by applicants who describe situations where they’ve demonstrated relevant skills like good communication or teamwork, problem-solving, initiative, leadership, or achieving goals.
  • Research the course: London School of Economics is keen to know things like why you want to study management, what specific aspects of their course interest you, how it relates to your academic studies, and what additional reading or other activities have led you to apply.
  • Entrepreneurial flair: Bournemouth likes its business studies applicants to show they are 'self-starters' who enjoy identifying and solving business problems.

Making your business experience count

It’s not just what you've done but how you've reflected on it. If you work-shadowed the CEO of a multi-national company, that's great, but it will have zero impact unless you spell out what you personally gained from it.

Similarly, if your part-time supermarket job or role in a Young Enterprise programme has helped you develop your skills and confidence, that’s great too. But it will only have an impact on your statement if you explain how or give an actual example.

It's the "how" that brings your statement to life and makes it interesting and personal. So try to think of specific occasions or unique ways you have demonstrated your potential, or maybe something you've observed about customer behaviour, management styles or an effective (or ineffective) marketing campaign.

It's even better if you can then link it to something you've learned in your business, economics, or psychology studies, or read in the Financial Times, The Economist, or on the BBC website.

Or consider the transferable skills you've gained through extracurricular activities and how they can show what the University of Bath describes as 'an active interest in understanding people, work, and organisations'.

Engineering & management personal statement example.

The rapid advancement in engineering technologies over the past century has radically changed the way we live. These technologies have not only brought about positive change but also a mosaic of interrelated problems that afflict us socially, economically and ecologically.

I believe that engineers should incorporate management views and economic expertise as part of their curricular to effectively manage their practices and find creative solutions. This will not only improve our standards of living but this ensures a legacy for the future generation. I intend to pursue a career in Engineering and Management so that I can be part of this quest to modernise our lives.

Since this career explores the diverse nature of engineering practices, I wish to acquire and comprehend the techniques that are employed in this array of fields. I believe it's a challenging career which creates wealth and adds value to the places we live and work.

Growing up I have looked up to engineers as my role models and I have always aspired to be one myself. My passion for science dates back to when I was in grade school. An aptitude for physics and mathematics enabled me to excel in all my science subjects at O-level.

Throughout the 4 years I was an O-level student I was proud to take part in several science projects. The projects that intrigued me most were that of a model windmill, a solar cooker and that of a model water pump. These in particular made me aware of how new technology must be introduced into society without hurting our environment.

In 2006, I was drafted into a 4 member bridge building team. We competed representing our school with 8 other schools and came out 5th. Although we did not win, it was an invaluable challenge. As I progressed to A-level, I took Maths, Physics and Chemistry as my combination of subjects to utilize the aptitude I had for these subjects.

Despite the fact that teachers were sometimes a shortage, I never lost hope because I knew I could take the challenge. Much of my learning at A-level was based on presentations we did as a class alternatively on each topic to effectively utilize each others knowledge. We attended seminars with other schools to exchange views and ideas on these subjects.

I was thrilled by how closely related the 3 subjects are and I figured out how they create a strong base for a variety of careers. I found the practical lessons exciting as they involved putting ideas into concrete terms and how to communicate observations. This tough learning experience taught me not to depend much on teachers but to research ahead on every topic that I am studying.

Apart from my academic studies I also had some extra curricular activities at heart. From 2005 to 2009 I was in the school athletics team. I partook in short marathon competitions and I also did high jump. I was also the school's football team medic. Sometimes I joined the team when they were practicing.

Away from the sporting fields, I was a member of the Interact Club. In 2008 and 2009 much of the club's activities were organized by me as I was Project Coordinator.

Being a member of the Environmental Awareness Campaign Club taught me that for the survival of our planet we must learn to strike a balance between development needs and environmental protection. I feel obliged to be part of the engineers who are working tirelessly to avert the threat of global warming.

Under the activities of this club I planted 3 Mopane trees during my final year on the National Tree Planting Day. It is rather unfortunate for me as I could not acquire any work experience from 2010 up to now due to the unexpected circumstances that prevailed here in Zimbabwe. I have spent much of my time reading novels and National Geographic.

For me pursuing this Engineering and Management degree is the realisation of a dream. I am looking forward to face the challenges of university life both academically and socially. I can only feel that my dream aspiration is now within grasp.

What is a personal statement?

Think of a personal statement as a quick snapshot of yourself on your resume. It's a brief section that tells employers what kind of employee you are. Sometimes, it's also called resume objectives or CV personal statement.

The personal statement shows your goals and what makes you unique. It can be used to show how your skills, experiences, and job goals make you stand out from other applicants. This can significantly affect how the employer sees you as a potential employee.

Key elements to include in a personal statement

  • Your value as an employee: Explain what makes you special. Talk about the skills, qualities, and experiences that make you different from others applying for the job. Show how your experience matches the company's needs and how you can help them succeed.
  • Your career objectives : At the end of your resume objective statement, list your career goals and ambitions. Make your short and long-term career goals clear. This shows that you're committed to professional growth and development.

Tips on writing a personal statement for your resume

Before you start writing your statement, think about the following tips.

Selecting the most impactful experiences to share

Carefully choose which experiences to highlight in your CV personal statement. Consider the following aspects to guarantee that you demonstrate the most effective ones:

  • Relevance to job scope: Select experiences and relevant qualifications that directly relate to the needs of your desired role.
  • Significance of results: Highlight experiences in which you achieved substantial results. Focus on your efforts and accomplishments.
  • Business impact: Show how your work has increased the company's profits. Give numbers to support your results and explain how your work has helped the group succeed or grow.

Demonstrating problem-solving and leadership through past scenarios

In your resume personal statement, use examples from your past to show how you've solved problems and led others .

Try to give an example of your problem and how you solved it. Highlight situations when you were proactive, made tough choices, and helped others succeed.

Demonstrating that you can deal with problems and lead confidently shows you're ready for new tasks in your next job.

Keeping your personal statement concise

Write a short, clear, objective statement to help you hold the reader's attention. Here are some suggestions to help you keep your resume personal statement short:

  • Editing: Carefully read over your resume and personal statement. Remove unnecessary details or repeated information, and ensure you only include the most useful and important facts.
  • Clarity: Write clearly to make sure your message is easy to understand. Avoid using jargon or academic terms that the reader might not know.
  • Length: Personal statements should be short but full of helpful information. There is no rigid word limit but keep your statement to a few brief lines that get to the point of who you are as a professional and what you want to achieve.

Formatting and structuring your statement

Here are some guidelines for making your objective statement more straightforward and organised.

Formatting tips for maximum readability

The layout of your resume personal statement affects how hiring managers read and interact with your content. To make sure your writing is easy to comprehend, consider the following:

  • For a professional appearance, pick a classy font that's simple to read, such as Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri.
  • Keep the font size the same throughout the document. The best range is between 10pt and 12pt.
  • When choosing the point of view, think about the tone and setting of your resume personal statement.
  • First-person POV allows you to connect with the reader more directly, and third-person POV can present an air of professionalism and objectivity.

Pros and cons of each POV style

Both the first-person and the third-person POVs have pros and cons. A first-person POV makes it feel like the text is directed at the reader, but it can sometimes be too casual. On the other hand, a third-person POV seems objective and professional. This is common in formal settings but can feel impersonal or distant.

Man in a business attire typing on a keyboard

The POV you choose affects the way your personal statement reads. First-person POV creates a more personal and conversational tone. The third-person perspective conveys a feeling of formality and objectivity, setting a tone appropriate for formal papers.

Alignment with your overall resume style

Pick a POV for your personal statement that complements your resume's general tone and style. The document should flow from one section to the next. To make a good impression on recruiters, change the POV to fit the role, the company culture, and the business. If you’re applying for a creative role, you can make your resume stand out by matching the creative writing style of your prospective employer.

Resume personal statement in first-person POV

“With a strong background in content marketing, I excel in writing, editing, content planning, and SEO. In my previous roles, I was committed to ensuring my team met deadlines and KPIs. I'm eager to leverage my skills and enthusiasm as Content Manager for the Singapore Creative Ad Agency.”

Resume personal statement in third-person POV

“Has a strong background in content marketing. Excels in writing, editing, content planning, and SEO. In previous roles, demonstrated a commitment to ensuring the team met deadlines and KPIs. Eager to leverage skills and enthusiasm as Content Manager for the Singapore Creative Ad Agency.”

Common mistakes when writing a personal statement

Avoid common clichés and overused phrases.

Don't include phrases such as "hardworking," "team player," and "results-oriented." They don't say much about you and won't help you stand out from other applicants.

What to leave out of your personal statements

Remove any old or useless information that doesn't fit with your story or add value to your application. For example, if your achievements as a high school student aren’t relevant to your application, don’t include them. Read the job description carefully before adding any information.

Bad personal statement examples

"Motivated individual seeking challenging opportunities to utilise analytical skills and grow within a dynamic organisation."

"Passionate team player with excellent communication skills and a strong work ethic."

"Detail-oriented professional with a proven track record of success in various roles."

These examples are too short and vague. They don’t say anything about you as a person or employee. Make sure your personal statements showcase your unique traits and career path. Show your positive impact in your previous roles, and highlight what benefit your prospective employer can get from hiring you.

Bottom line

Personal statements can make or break a job application. Using the ideas, examples, and advice in this guide, you can write the best statement that catches the hiring managers interest and connects with them on a deeper level. Remember that your personal statement is more than just a summary of your work history. It's your chance to show potential employers what you can do and how passionate you are about the job.

  • What should I write in my statement for a resume? Your statement should briefly summarise your professional attributes. It should cover relevant skills, experiences, and career goals that match the role you're pursuing.
  • Can you provide summary statements and examples for a job application? Yes! Here's an example: "As a seasoned marketing professional with a passion for innovation, I'm excited to leverage my expertise in digital marketing to enhance and energise your dynamic team at XYZ Company. Committed to driving tangible outcomes, I aim to contribute my skills in crafting impactful campaigns and utilising analytics to fuel your organisation's success."
  • How long should a personal statement be on a resume? A few sentences should be enough for a short but powerful statement. They should focus on the most relevant information that fits the job description.
  • What are some dos and don'ts for writing a resume personal statement? Dos: Personalise your statement for the position and company. Highlight your job-related abilities, experiences, and accomplishments. Don'ts: Avoid using clichés or generic phrases. Don't make it too long.
  • How can I make my statement stand out to employers? Make your personal statements special to each role you apply for. Think about your personal profile and the job description. Highlight your unique skills, accomplishments, and goals that match the role's needs. This will help you connect strongly with managers.
  • Are there any online tools to help me craft a personal statement? Yes, tools like Perfect Essay Writer, Paper Help, and BBQ Papers can help you improve and modify your personal statements by giving you language tips and reading-level feedback.

Start Your Career In Project Management

Getting your foot in the door and starting a career can be daunting if you are new to project management and don’t have any experience . Fear not—here’s some helpful advice to get you started.

Include Certifications on Your Resume and LinkedIn Profile

Highlight any and all certifications on your project management resume . Be sure to include the certification, the date it was earned, the expiry date, and the certification provider’s name.

Many of the organizations that issue certifications will also offer you a digital badge that can be added to your LinkedIn profile (which is handy for recruiters as they are reviewing your profile).

As a beginner, having one of the certifications noted in this article, along with your educational achievements such as a four-year degree, bachelor’s degree, or associate degree can be just as impressive as having a lot of project management experience and the PMP certification.

Gain Experience

Look for opportunities to manage small projects or assist project managers at your organization in your current role.

Also, look for opportunities to gain project management experience in areas such as project planning , stakeholder management, project scheduling, quality management, and the project life cycle by volunteering your time to a charitable or non-profit organization in your community.

Learn Continuously

Take advantage of online project management courses , webinars, and books to deepen your project management knowledge. Many of the certification providers listed in this article provide these types of resources to certification holders—continuous learning is often a requirement to maintain your certification.

Local community colleges also offer excellent project management programs to help you get the required number of hours of project management education.

Other project management training providers offer courses to help you develop foundational project management skills and aid in your professional development as well.

It’s also worth brushing up on your knowledge of project management software so that you have a few tricks up your sleeve to show off.

Join professional organizations, such as PMI or other local project management groups, to connect with other professionals. Many of these groups also offer virtual networking opportunities if in-person events are not available to you.

Networking can be especially valuable when you’re searching for a PM role as a beginner—people in your network might be hiring (or may know someone who is).

Seek Mentorship

Find a mentor who can provide guidance, support, and insights into the project management profession.

Mentors may be found internally through your current organization (for example, senior leaders or executives). Mentors may also be found externally through professional organizations and community groups.

For example, many local PMI chapters offer mentorship programs for members. You can also find a mentor through your professional network. Don’t be afraid to ask colleagues, managers, and other contacts for recommendations. LinkedIn also makes it easy and accessible to contact potential mentors.

Develop Soft Skills

Work on essential soft skills like communication, leadership skills, and problem-solving, which are crucial for successful project management.

If you don’t have a lot of formal work experience, highlight this on your resume by citing school projects (and what role you took on with your team members) or volunteer work you have completed.

Fact-checking warnings from Democrats about Project 2025 and Donald Trump

This fact check originally appeared on PolitiFact .

Project 2025 has a starring role in this week’s Democratic National Convention.

And it was front and center on Night 1.

WATCH: Hauling large copy of Project 2025, Michigan state Sen. McMorrow speaks at 2024 DNC

“This is Project 2025,” Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, D-Royal Oak, said as she laid a hardbound copy of the 900-page document on the lectern. “Over the next four nights, you are going to hear a lot about what is in this 900-page document. Why? Because this is the Republican blueprint for a second Trump term.”

Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, has warned Americans about “Trump’s Project 2025” agenda — even though former President Donald Trump doesn’t claim the conservative presidential transition document.

“Donald Trump wants to take our country backward,” Harris said July 23 in Milwaukee. “He and his extreme Project 2025 agenda will weaken the middle class. Like, we know we got to take this seriously, and can you believe they put that thing in writing?”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Harris’ running mate, has joined in on the talking point.

“Don’t believe (Trump) when he’s playing dumb about this Project 2025. He knows exactly what it’ll do,” Walz said Aug. 9 in Glendale, Arizona.

Trump’s campaign has worked to build distance from the project, which the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, led with contributions from dozens of conservative groups.

Much of the plan calls for extensive executive-branch overhauls and draws on both long-standing conservative principles, such as tax cuts, and more recent culture war issues. It lays out recommendations for disbanding the Commerce and Education departments, eliminating certain climate protections and consolidating more power to the president.

Project 2025 offers a sweeping vision for a Republican-led executive branch, and some of its policies mirror Trump’s 2024 agenda, But Harris and her presidential campaign have at times gone too far in describing what the project calls for and how closely the plans overlap with Trump’s campaign.

PolitiFact researched Harris’ warnings about how the plan would affect reproductive rights, federal entitlement programs and education, just as we did for President Joe Biden’s Project 2025 rhetoric. Here’s what the project does and doesn’t call for, and how it squares with Trump’s positions.

Are Trump and Project 2025 connected?

To distance himself from Project 2025 amid the Democratic attacks, Trump wrote on Truth Social that he “knows nothing” about it and has “no idea” who is in charge of it. (CNN identified at least 140 former advisers from the Trump administration who have been involved.)

The Heritage Foundation sought contributions from more than 100 conservative organizations for its policy vision for the next Republican presidency, which was published in 2023.

Project 2025 is now winding down some of its policy operations, and director Paul Dans, a former Trump administration official, is stepping down, The Washington Post reported July 30. Trump campaign managers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita denounced the document.

WATCH: A look at the Project 2025 plan to reshape government and Trump’s links to its authors

However, Project 2025 contributors include a number of high-ranking officials from Trump’s first administration, including former White House adviser Peter Navarro and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson.

A recently released recording of Russell Vought, a Project 2025 author and the former director of Trump’s Office of Management and Budget, showed Vought saying Trump’s “very supportive of what we do.” He said Trump was only distancing himself because Democrats were making a bogeyman out of the document.

Project 2025 wouldn’t ban abortion outright, but would curtail access

The Harris campaign shared a graphic on X that claimed “Trump’s Project 2025 plan for workers” would “go after birth control and ban abortion nationwide.”

The plan doesn’t call to ban abortion nationwide, though its recommendations could curtail some contraceptives and limit abortion access.

What’s known about Trump’s abortion agenda neither lines up with Harris’ description nor Project 2025’s wish list.

Project 2025 says the Department of Health and Human Services Department should “return to being known as the Department of Life by explicitly rejecting the notion that abortion is health care.”

It recommends that the Food and Drug Administration reverse its 2000 approval of mifepristone, the first pill taken in a two-drug regimen for a medication abortion. Medication is the most common form of abortion in the U.S. — accounting for around 63 percent in 2023.

If mifepristone were to remain approved, Project 2025 recommends new rules, such as cutting its use from 10 weeks into pregnancy to seven. It would have to be provided to patients in person — part of the group’s efforts to limit access to the drug by mail. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a legal challenge to mifepristone’s FDA approval over procedural grounds.

WATCH: Trump’s plans for health care and reproductive rights if he returns to White House The manual also calls for the Justice Department to enforce the 1873 Comstock Act on mifepristone, which bans the mailing of “obscene” materials. Abortion access supporters fear that a strict interpretation of the law could go further to ban mailing the materials used in procedural abortions, such as surgical instruments and equipment.

The plan proposes withholding federal money from states that don’t report to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention how many abortions take place within their borders. The plan also would prohibit abortion providers, such as Planned Parenthood, from receiving Medicaid funds. It also calls for the Department of Health and Human Services to ensure that the training of medical professionals, including doctors and nurses, omits abortion training.

The document says some forms of emergency contraception — particularly Ella, a pill that can be taken within five days of unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy — should be excluded from no-cost coverage. The Affordable Care Act requires most private health insurers to cover recommended preventive services, which involves a range of birth control methods, including emergency contraception.

Trump has recently said states should decide abortion regulations and that he wouldn’t block access to contraceptives. Trump said during his June 27 debate with Biden that he wouldn’t ban mifepristone after the Supreme Court “approved” it. But the court rejected the lawsuit based on standing, not the case’s merits. He has not weighed in on the Comstock Act or said whether he supports it being used to block abortion medication, or other kinds of abortions.

Project 2025 doesn’t call for cutting Social Security, but proposes some changes to Medicare

“When you read (Project 2025),” Harris told a crowd July 23 in Wisconsin, “you will see, Donald Trump intends to cut Social Security and Medicare.”

The Project 2025 document does not call for Social Security cuts. None of its 10 references to Social Security addresses plans for cutting the program.

Harris also misleads about Trump’s Social Security views.

In his earlier campaigns and before he was a politician, Trump said about a half-dozen times that he’s open to major overhauls of Social Security, including cuts and privatization. More recently, in a March 2024 CNBC interview, Trump said of entitlement programs such as Social Security, “There’s a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting.” However, he quickly walked that statement back, and his CNBC comment stands at odds with essentially everything else Trump has said during the 2024 presidential campaign.

Trump’s campaign website says that not “a single penny” should be cut from Social Security. We rated Harris’ claim that Trump intends to cut Social Security Mostly False.

Project 2025 does propose changes to Medicare, including making Medicare Advantage, the private insurance offering in Medicare, the “default” enrollment option. Unlike Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans have provider networks and can also require prior authorization, meaning that the plan can approve or deny certain services. Original Medicare plans don’t have prior authorization requirements.

The manual also calls for repealing health policies enacted under Biden, such as the Inflation Reduction Act. The law enabled Medicare to negotiate with drugmakers for the first time in history, and recently resulted in an agreement with drug companies to lower the prices of 10 expensive prescriptions for Medicare enrollees.

Trump, however, has said repeatedly during the 2024 presidential campaign that he will not cut Medicare.

Project 2025 would eliminate the Education Department, which Trump supports

The Harris campaign said Project 2025 would “eliminate the U.S. Department of Education” — and that’s accurate. Project 2025 says federal education policy “should be limited and, ultimately, the federal Department of Education should be eliminated.” The plan scales back the federal government’s role in education policy and devolves the functions that remain to other agencies.

Aside from eliminating the department, the project also proposes scrapping the Biden administration’s Title IX revision, which prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It also would let states opt out of federal education programs and calls for passing a federal parents’ bill of rights similar to ones passed in some Republican-led state legislatures.

Republicans, including Trump, have pledged to close the department, which gained its status in 1979 within Democratic President Jimmy Carter’s presidential Cabinet.

In one of his Agenda 47 policy videos, Trump promised to close the department and “to send all education work and needs back to the states.” Eliminating the department would have to go through Congress.

What Project 2025, Trump would do on overtime pay

In the graphic, the Harris campaign says Project 2025 allows “employers to stop paying workers for overtime work.”

The plan doesn’t call for banning overtime wages. It recommends changes to some Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, regulations and to overtime rules. Some changes, if enacted, could result in some people losing overtime protections, experts told us.

The document proposes that the Labor Department maintain an overtime threshold “that does not punish businesses in lower-cost regions (e.g., the southeast United States).” This threshold is the amount of money executive, administrative or professional employees need to make for an employer to exempt them from overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

In 2019, the Trump’s administration finalized a rule that expanded overtime pay eligibility to most salaried workers earning less than about $35,568, which it said made about 1.3 million more workers eligible for overtime pay. The Trump-era threshold is high enough to cover most line workers in lower-cost regions, Project 2025 said.

The Biden administration raised that threshold to $43,888 beginning July 1, and that will rise to $58,656 on Jan. 1, 2025. That would grant overtime eligibility to about 4 million workers, the Labor Department said.

It’s unclear how many workers Project 2025’s proposal to return to the Trump-era overtime threshold in some parts of the country would affect, but experts said some would presumably lose the right to overtime wages.

Other overtime proposals in Project 2025’s plan include allowing some workers to choose to accumulate paid time off instead of overtime pay, or to work more hours in one week and fewer in the next, rather than receive overtime.

Trump’s past with overtime pay is complicated. In 2016, the Obama administration said it would raise the overtime to salaried workers earning less than $47,476 a year, about double the exemption level set in 2004 of $23,660 a year.

But when a judge blocked the Obama rule, the Trump administration didn’t challenge the court ruling. Instead it set its own overtime threshold, which raised the amount, but by less than Obama.

What We Know About Kamala Harris’s $5 Trillion Tax Plan So Far

The vice president supports the tax increases proposed by the Biden White House, according to her campaign.

  • Share full article

Kamala Harris, in a lavender blazer, speaking into two mics at a lectern with a crowd of people seated behind her.

By Andrew Duehren

Reporting from Washington

In a campaign otherwise light on policy specifics, Vice President Kamala Harris this week quietly rolled out her most detailed, far-ranging proposal yet: nearly $5 trillion in tax increases over a decade.

That’s how much more revenue the federal government would raise if it adopted a number of tax increases that President Biden proposed in the spring . Ms. Harris’s campaign said this week that she supported those tax hikes, which were thoroughly laid out in the most recent federal budget plan prepared by the Biden administration.

No one making less than $400,000 a year would see their taxes go up under the plan. Instead, Ms. Harris is seeking to significantly raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans and large corporations. Congress has previously rejected many of these tax ideas, even when Democrats controlled both chambers.

While tax policy is right now a subplot in a turbulent presidential campaign, it will be a primary policy issue in Washington next year. The next president will have to work with Congress to address the tax cuts Donald J. Trump signed into law in 2017. Many of those tax cuts expire after 2025, meaning millions of Americans will see their taxes go up if lawmakers don’t reach a deal next year.

Here’s an overview of what we now know — and still don’t know — about the Democratic nominee’s views on taxes.

Higher taxes on corporations

The most recent White House budget includes several proposals that would raise taxes on large corporations . Chief among them is raising the corporate tax rate to 28 percent from 21 percent, a step that the Treasury Department estimated could bring in $1.3 trillion in revenue over the next 10 years.
