About the role

We are looking for a Research Associate to lead interdisciplinary research into where localism and engagement with local people exists in youth theatres, participatory programmes, and amateur companies across the City of Sunderland.

As the first major study of local theatre, this is a key post in a new Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funded research project,  Local Theatres: Participation, Inclusion, Imagination.

You will lead research in participatory theatre-with a focus on creative and critical responses to localism within the City of Sunderland.

What you can bring

At the University of Sunderland, we prioritise not only your professional growth but also your happiness and well-being.

  • Enjoy a generous annual leave entitlement of 36 days, along with an additional 5 closure days over the Christmas break and 8 Bank Holidays.
  • Enrolment into our generous pension scheme, ensuring your financial security for the future.
  • Access to our “My Lifestyle Benefits Platform”, where you can enjoy online discounts at hundreds of retailers every day. Plus, take advantage of exclusive schemes that allow you to purchase a new car, bike, or technology at a discounted rate.

  • For those with young children, our on-site nursery offers exceptional care and education for children from birth to school age, operating throughout the year.
  • Maintaining an active lifestyle is made easy with discounted membership for CitySpace Fitness, our state-of-the-art facility for sports and social activities.

We strongly believe that an inclusive university, where a diverse range of individuals feel valued and have equal opportunity to get into work and reach their potential, is good for our staff, students, university, and society.

Our work on equality, diversity and inclusivity has never been more important. We believe inclusivity is an essential value at the heart of what we do, and we want all our staff to be part of that journey with us.

This team investigates how best to ‘implement’ evidence-based practice and clinical research within health services in south London, nationally and internationally. The team studies the role of healthcare professionals, managers, commissioners of health services and policymakers as well as organisational structures and processes to try to understand why health services don’t always offer the safest, most effective treatments and ways of working.

CIS is based in the Department of Health Service & Population Research (HSPR) whose main goal is to conduct world-leading research and education using the social and health sciences to better understand and to improve health outcomes, systems, and care, both locally and globally, particularly in disadvantaged and marginalised populations.

The appointed researcher will work on a national study in patient safety looking at Epistemic Exclusion and Patient Safety Participation, a imed at improving decision-making in patient safety for a wider diversity of groups and particularly for those from racialised backgrounds, people with mental health challenges or learning disabilities, who are more likely to experience healthcare harm.

Key tasks will be to work with the project lead, Dr Josephine Ocloo and Dr Blaine Robin a sociologist advisor to the project and other stakeholders on a key scoping theoretical review of the sociological theory literature. The review aims to identify approaches which can best support coproduction, involvement, engagement, and participation, with a diversity of groups in patient safety improvement. Wider tasks include: contributing to evidence synthesis work across the project work including helping to develop protocols, searching bibliographic databases, screening, analysing and interpretation of data and write up; working with the Integrated Care Boards (statutory NHS organisations, responsible for developing plans for meeting the health needs of the population in a geographical area), who are part of the study, with the study PI, to develop strategies, analyse and evaluate data that can help develop local ICB patient safety reporting and learning; conducting and analysing qualitative interviews (with the study lead) with healthcare staff and diverse patient groups affected by healthcare harm, for publication in high-quality journals.

The post will be on a fixed term contract at 100% FTE (35 hours per week) until 6th October 2027.

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  • Relevant PhD/DPhil with post-qualification research experience in an academic setting
