Best free iOS resume builder

Resume star 2: pro cv designer.

Resume Star 2 isn't the most visually stunning resume design app for iOS, but it gets the job done. To use, tap each section of the resume, fill in your information and it will fill in a traditional template (you only get one layout). The app offers some example resumes you can start with and edit as needed, including job-specific ones for a: cashier, dental hygienist, receptionist, waitress, mechanic and senior manager.

You can add or delete any sections you like without needing to hit save every time you add information, and you can see your resume update as you go. The autosave feature makes it easy to toggle quickly between the different sections as well. At the end, you'll have a basic resume ready to go. The app's interface doesn't offer as much guidance about how to write your resume or what types of information to include. If you need extra help, tap the information icon in the bottom left and choose the Resume Writing Guide. This will open up a crash course on resume writing in your mobile browser. It also includes a job search feature.

The app collects payment via donations after you use the service. You don't have to pay if you don’t want to. The app connects to iCloud, and you can export your resume as a PDF to any location on your device(s). If you are happy with the service, you pay $25 for it. Resume Star 2 has a 4.8 out of 5 rating, and more than 1,800 ratings in the App Store . The first version, Resume Star: Pro CV Maker, which is the same except for the iCloud connection, had a 4.9-star rating and more than 16,000 reviews. The site does not collect personally identifiable information without user consent, which seems to make it one of the more secure options available.

Once you're finished, you can download your document for free as a PDF, which you can then save on your device or send via email or text.

How we tested resume sites and services

When we evaluated the different resume templates and builders, we looked at how each site or app allowed you to create new resumes, browse templates or upload and edit existing resumes. We also looked at how easy or hard it would be to customize different templates and sections, how much guidance was available, how user-friendly it was to navigate, plus reading and understanding each company's privacy policies.

Some of our picks are free, some enlist the help of professional writers and some require a subscription or one-time payment. When it comes to premium or paid services, we evaluated how inclusive its packages were compared to basic or free versions. In many cases for the professional writing services, these paid tiers included more guidance and additional job search support like a cover letter and LinkedIn editing, suggested jobs to apply to and interview coaching.

Factors to consider when choosing a resume writing service

This was a key factor when compiling this list. Whether you're looking for a free service to boost your current resume or interested in professional editing services, there’s something for everyone’s price range.

Ease of use

When looking at each website, we looked at how easy it was to navigate, browse templates and add, edit or remove different sections. We also considered whether you can download and share your resume for free and in what format.

Customization options

Customization options were essential, as everyone's resume is going to look different. Having easy user control over your resume helps you create a resume that meets your industry's standards and showcases your professional experiences.

Privacy policies

Privacy policies were the final important factor to consider, as many of these are websites and apps that can collect and store your personal information. All of the services and websites included on this list have decent privacy settings, and we noted which ones have exceptionally clear use cases and account deletion policies.

Commitment to personalization

What really sets Resume Writers apart, though, is their commitment to creating unique and personalized resumes for each candidate. This service offers a collaborative approach, allowing customers to work closely with experienced writers who have similar backgrounds to ensure the resume aligns with the industry's tone. This level of individualized attention is unmatched in the industry.

Professional writers who know your field

Resume Writers has been operating since 1999 and stands as the largest network of independently-contracted resume writers. With over 24 years of experience, Resume Writers knows how to put together a resume. When it comes to bringing in the best professionals, Resume Writers makes sure all their writers go through rigorous training and apprenticeship programs to meet the high standards set by the Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Directors International. So when you order a resume from them, you can feel confident about two things: first, your writer will have the skill to whip up a killer resume that fits your unique situation like a glove. And second, they'll have all the insider knowledge about resume writing formats, procedures, and standards for your specific field.

Collaborative process with quick turnaround

The resume process with Resume Writers follows a quick and easy 3-step approach.

  • First, customers select the desired resume type and make the payment. For the record, all the resumes at Resume Writers are separated by 6 different styles including student resumes, professional resumes, executive resumes, career change resumes, military/civilian resumes, and Tech/IT resumes.
  • Once the customers have decided which type fits their needs, then step two is to upload an existing resume or provide current career information through the website.
  • Step three is in the hands of the Resume Writers staff. A dedicated writer is then assigned to assess the materials and plan the project according to the specific needs of the candidate. Within 24-72 hours, customers receive the first draft, and the collaboration continues until the final draft meets their satisfaction.

Best Resume Writers

Resume Writers offers eight different pricing plans based on the categories of resumes. So, on top of offering student resumes, professional resumes, executive resumes, career change resumes, military/civilian resumes, and Tech/IT resumes, there are two extra pricing tiers for LinkedIn profiles and CV writing. The pricing is reasonable, and not overly expensive, especially for a collaborative service where your writer works closely with you to generate an accurate resume.

The pricing schedule shakes out as follows:

  • Student Plan: $169.95
  • Military-to-Civilian Plan: $169.95
  • Professional Plan: $199.95
  • LinkedIn Profile: $199.95

In addition to resume writing, Resume Writers provides additional items such as cover letters, thank-you notes, follow-up letters, and other important documents. These can be added to the base price for an additional cost ranging between $70 and $90.

Best Resume Writers

Interview guarantee

One standout feature of Resume Writers is their Interview Guarantee. If customers don't land a job interview within 2 months of receiving their professionally-written resume, Resume Writers will rewrite it for free. All customers need to do is shoot an email with their order number, and the Resume Writers team will get in touch with a new, revamped resume. Customers even have the option to stick with their original writer or get assigned a new one for a fresh perspective.

High-quality writing

The impressive reputation of Resume Writers is further evident through their "A+" rating and accreditation which they've held since 2010 from the Better Business Bureau. Further, Resume Writers has a fantastic average rating across different verified third-party review sites. Including Sitejabber, Trustpilot, and reviews on the BBB site, Resume Writers has an impressive average rating of 4.6 stars out of 5. While it doesn't have as many total reviews as some of the other options in our review, customers are clearly satisfied. Customers complimented Resume Writers' professionalism and the quality of the work when it was complete.

Best-in-class for resume writing

Considering the competitive fees, one-on-one collaboration with professional resume writers, field-specific writers that help you through every step of the process, and the added interview guarantee, Resume Writers receives our highest rating. The variety of resume options they offer, combined with their quick 72-hour turnaround time, showcases their commitment to customer satisfaction. According to the Resume.io site, their resumes have already enabled several customers to secure coveted positions at esteemed organizations including PWC, BMW, and T-Mobile.

23 million+ resumes completed

Acquired by Talent Inc. in 2021, Resume.io is dedicated to assisting job seekers in advancing their careers. With an impressive track record, they have helped build over 23 million resumes and attract over 34,000 daily sign-ups, showcasing their commitment to empowering individuals in their job search journey.

3-step builder

Resume.io offers a simple 3-step resume builder that helps you overcome pesky writer's block and those annoying formatting challenges. While you do need to sign up for a membership to use any of the templates or services at Resume.io, there is a 7-day trial period to check out all the bells and whistles. And, if you're not satisfied during that trial period, they've got your back with a money-back guarantee.

Low monthly cost

The price at Resume.io is really simple. The month-to-month payment plan means that everything that's involved in Resume.io's service comes with the payment. So, you get access not only to resume tools but their cover letter writing tools as well. After your 7-day paid trial, the price per month is $19.95. If you only need it for a handful of months this could be a great low-cost option compared to the hundreds of dollars in costs from other competitors.

Best Resume Writers

Money back guarantee within 7 days

One great feature of Resume.io is its money-back guarantee. They promise to return your money no questions asked within the first 7 days of your trial. If you feel like you're not getting your money's worth during the trial period, you get your refund. It's as simple as that. However, if you go past the 7-day trial period, you won't be eligible for the refund anymore, so keep that in mind as you work on your resume.

Huge review presence with top marks

There are few sites that have more reviews out there than Resume.io. If you check out their presence on Trustpilot, the company has 40,000+ individual reviews available. And the average rating? An impressive 4.6 stars out of 5. Users love how simple the platform is and they also note that it's quick to get their finished resume with no extra charges or surprises. There are also hundreds of reviews talking about the top-notch customer service at Resume.io, so you know you're going to be taken care of by the professionals there.

Leading resume writing platform

Resume.io has established itself as a leading platform for creating resumes online, with over 23 million resumes. The only downside is that it doesn't include some of the extra features seen on other platforms like help with your LinkedIn profile or thank-you/follow-up letters for employers. On the other hand, the platform's extensive review presence and high ratings on Trustpilot reflect the positive experiences of users, praising the simplicity of the platform and the exceptional customer service provided by the Resume.io team.

Strong choice

With a user-friendly interface and affordable pricing, including access to resume and cover letter tools, Resume.io offers a cost-effective solution for job seekers compared to other competitors. Overall, Resume.io is a reliable choice for individuals looking to create professional resumes and receive support in their job search journey.

With 20+ years of experience in the industry, the team at Blue Sky Resumes specializes in creating custom resumes tailored to individual needs. They have earned a multitude of professional certifications, and the company has garnered recognition from esteemed publications and media outlets, such as Oprah Winfrey Magazine, Washington Post, ABC, and CNN.

Preview relevant resumes before you buy

Blue Sky Resumes makes sure you know what you're paying for by giving you a variety of resumes to browse. All resumes on the site have been created by their team. These samples are categorized into nine different job types, allowing you to browse and find resumes that closely match the position you are applying for. Blue Sky Resumes wants potential customers to see where their money goes, and the resumes showcase not only writing skills but the formatting techniques employed as well. Each sample resume is accompanied by a detailed explanation of the strategy employed in its creation, offering free resume writing assistance for users who want to try it themselves.

Pricing for two resumes and extras

In terms of their pricing and packages, Blue Sky Resumes provides two resume writing options as well as seven different "extras" that you can add to your resume plan. For the two main resume packages, there is the Professional Resume which starts at $395, and the Executive Resume which starts at $695. It's important to note that Blue Sky Resumes tailors each package to the individual, so the listed prices are the lowest possible cost. In other words, there could be added costs for your final resume package.

Extra writing services available

If you're already planning to add some extras, Blue Sky Resumes' 7 different extras can help you ensure you have the complete job search package ranging in price from $145-$495. The options include:

  • Job Search Letters: $145

  • Talk to a Recruiter: $195
  • Executive Bio: $495
  • LinkedIn Profiles $495

The ultimate package

There is also a final package called "The Works'' which offers a Professional or Executive resume, 2 letters, 1 one-page executive bio, a full LinkedIn profile, resumes sent out to recruiters for you, contacts for targeted companies, and 2 coaching sessions of your choice. There is no listed price for this package, but given the individual pricing for the items in this package, we imagine it would be somewhere between $2,500 and $3,500 depending on the type of resume you start with.

Free week-by-week course for details

On top of their paid services, Blue Sky Resumes provides valuable free information through a subscription-based course. You just need to submit your name and email address and you'll have access to an email series teaching you about resumes. The emails will arrive across a 2-week period to teach you how to catch the attention of employers, demonstrate your value and skills, understand the power of a well-crafted LinkedIn profile, and even interview assistance. It's important to note that this course doesn't promise to result in a professionally-crafted resume; however, it's a great tool for customers who want to be able to do their own resumes in the future.

Best Resume Writers

DIY package for writers

If you happen to be one of those DIY customers, Blue Sky Resumes offers a paid comprehensive Do-it-Yourself (DIY) Guide that is separate from the 2-week course. This downloadable e-course includes a 170+ page PDF of a self-study guide, a resume writing system, informative tutorials, 20 pre-formatted resume templates, valuable advice, and more. This guide costs $49 to download, and you can start reading for free to preview the content. As a bonus, there is a 100% money-back guarantee if you are not satisfied with the course.

Not much buzz, but positive ratings

In terms of company reputation, Blue Sky Resumes has been featured in popular publications like Oprah Winfrey Magazine and the Washington Post. However, the company doesn't have a lot of buzz from clients. The company has no presence on the Better Business Bureau or on verified third-party review sites like Sitejabber or Trustpilot. One third-party site ranked the customer service at Blue Sky Resumes at a solid 4 stars, which was a nice tick in the company's favor. On the other hand, we would love to see a little more feedback for Blue Sky Resumes overall.

The Sky's the limit

While Blue Sky Resumes may have a higher price point for their customized resume services, the quality of their work is well-regarded and reliable. Investing in a professionally crafted resume from them can prove to be highly beneficial, opening up numerous career opportunities. The value you receive from an exceptional resume will undoubtedly outweigh the initial cost. We highly recommend taking advantage of the comprehensive services offered by Blue Sky Resumes to elevate your job search to new heights. This is hands-down a great full-service option, and is worth your consideration.

Three resume writing packages

If you do go ahead with TopResume after the analysis, you will find three packages for you to choose from: Starter, Premium, and Ultimate. Each level adds a few extras. What you need to know about all of them is that you will receive a resume written by TopResume professionals that is formatted to industry standards, and optimized for keyword searches. The pricing goes up at each level due to the addition of things like cover letters or LinkedIn profile optimization. For example:

  • Starter: $149 which includes the standard resume
  • Premium: $219 which includes Starter features, a cover letter, and a 60-day interview guarantee
  • Ultimate: $349 which includes Starter and Premium features, and a LinkedIn makeover.

60-day guarantee

One standout feature at TopResume is its quality assurance policy. TopResume stands by the quality of its resume writing services with a 60-day guarantee. If, within two months of receiving your new resume, you do not experience twice as many job interviews, TopResume will provide a full rewrite free of charge. To qualify for this guarantee, you must contact TopResume via email within 180 days of receiving your finalized resume. However, it is important to note that if you purchase the Standard package, you will not be eligible for the 60-day guarantee. So, you will have to pay a minimum of $219 to qualify, which may be frustrating to customers who only need a resume and don't want to pay for the extras.

Best Resume Writers

Popular with reviewers everywhere

TopResume has received a variety of accolades from reputable news outlets such as CNBC, Business Insider, The Huffington Post, USA Today, and Refinery29. On average, TopResume has a rating of 4.5 stars out of 5 across different third-party review sites. Further, this service's parent company, Talent Inc., has a stellar "A+" rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau, showcasing that this company is popular with customers across the board. Many clients express their pleasant surprise at the seamless and efficient process, praising the fast turnaround time and professional communication throughout.

A newer but good service overall

Working closely with a dedicated writer ensures that you have complete control over the resume creation process. You will not be considered "done" until you are fully content with the final product, alleviating any concerns about being stuck with a resume that does not meet your expectations. While the 60-day guarantee only applies to more expensive options, customers in general are very pleased with the results they've gotten from using TopResume. The pricing structure is transparent, and considering the potential for securing a job quickly, the cost has been deemed worthwhile by many who have successfully used TopResume's services.

Company comes highly recommended

During our research, we found that Resumeble has performed wonderfully with reviewers. On top of a stellar presence on verified third-party review sites, Resumeable also has an impressive "A" rating with the Better Business Bureau. In terms of those reviews, Resumeable doesn't have as many as some resume writing services, with just over 200 total reviews. However, they all have great ratings attached to them. The average score offered by reviewers is an impressive 4.6 stars out of 5. Clients agree that the quality of the resumes here is top-notch and Resumeble has an impressive turnaround time. Customers loved the straightforward process and the guarantee for interviews.

A great option near the top of the stack

With a 60-day satisfaction guarantee and free rewrites as well as competitive pricing, Resumeble stands out as a fantastic option for customers looking for a fresh resume to support their job search. With rave reviews from users who've already seen success with the Resumeble resumes, there are a lot of points in this company's favor. It's a great service to check out, although it's outpaced by services that are more well-rounded or offer better pricing overall.

ResumeEdge Review

  • Prices from $100 for resumes
  • Prices up to $240 for full service
  • 25+ years of experience
  • 30-day period for free revisions
  • Reviewers have scored interviews from resumes

ResumeEdge, established in 1998, focuses on providing assistance to individuals seeking to enhance their resumes, craft compelling LinkedIn profiles, and advance their careers. The dedicated team of resume writers and editors at ResumeEdge maintains regular communication with customers via email and phone to ensure that each resume is optimized according to their needs and preferences. With over 25 years in the industry, it's clear ResumeEdge knows how to prioritize customer satisfaction and strives to deliver high-quality services.

Process is easy to understand

At ResumeEdge, experienced writers are employed to craft top-notch resumes. Users provide their information through a questionnaire and have consultations with skilled resume professionals. Based on the customer's qualifications, the team designs and writes a personalized resume. Users also have the opportunity to make edits to the draft provided.

Modern site, but a little cluttered

To get started at ResumeEdge, you just need to click the "select a service" button on their front page. This will take you to their wide menu of job-search-related services. You can select from normal resume writing, CV writing, resume editing, or even more unique options like LinkedIn profile optimization or KSA responses. The site is modern and the green buttons make it simple to know exactly what is clickable. However, the content is a little busy, so if you don't know exactly what you want, it can be hard to find it on ResumeEdge.

Best Resume Writers

Pricing is a little complicated

For resumes, the pricing is fairly straightforward. It's important to note that while the prices are competitive to start with, with all of these different add-on services, the price can and will go up from the one listed depending on the details of the resume you need. However, there are two places you need to look to get the best prices.

  • First, along the top of the screen, you'll see little boxes with different services. If you click the "order" button, it will take you to the lowest-cost option for every service (resume writing included). With prices starting at $100, you can get a resume for a mid-career job in 5 days. As you start to add on to that or make changes to the type of resume the price on the "order" window will go up.
  • The second place to look for prices is a bit lower on the resume page where the packages are listed. You can choose between Standard which offers a resume and cover letter starting at $140, Professional option which includes everything in Standard plus help with your LinkedIn profile starting at $215, and finally, Advanced which offers the same as Professional with the addition of thank-you and follow-up letters starting at $240.

30-days for free revisions

At ResumeEdge, making clients happy is a top priority. They've got you covered with a satisfaction guarantee that goes the extra mile. You can ask for revisions and tweaks to your resume for free within 30 days. With ResumeEdge, you can kick back and relax, knowing they won't stop until you're 100% satisfied with your final resume.

Best Resume Writers

Resumes are scoring interviews

In terms of customer feedback, there are some impressive numbers for ResumeEdge. For example, the company holds a 4.9-star average at Trustpilot and a 4.7-star average from Sitejabber. While there aren't more than 90 total reviews across both platforms, the feedback is overwhelmingly positive. Customers noted that the writers they were paired with listened to what the customer needed and made sure the resume reflected those needs. Clients also said that their new resume from ResumeEdge helped them get interviews right away, which is high praise.

UI could use updates, but a good service overall

While ResumeEdge has a slightly more cluttered user interface than other options in our review, it still stands out as a great service to check out to get a new resume put together. They've been in the industry for ages and even offer a 30-day period where you can access free revisions from your on-staff writer even after your resume is complete. Overall, with great feedback from reviewers, ResumeEdge stands out as a competitive company to use for an effective new resume.

PRW Review

  • Pricing from $397 for a resume
  • Prices up to $697 with extras
  • Lets you select the resume writer
  • 100% satisfaction or you get a rewrite

Professional Resume Writers, or PRW, is based in Ann Arbor Michigan and was designed to help fill a gap in the resume writing business. Most services of this type have a handful of writers who work for the company. However, PRW uses its process to connect you with the top writers in your industry to prepare your next resume. With a unique quiz-based process, PRW matches you with a selection of writers to choose from who will help you prepare your resume. Further, with a satisfaction guarantee, they stand behind their writers and the service provided to help you score your next job.

Process empowers customers to find the best fit

Professional Resume Writers (PRW) stands out from the competition with its unique approach. Unlike the traditional resume writing industry, PRW has revolutionized the experience by addressing the challenge of comparing writers and knowing the price upfront. With PRW, clients have the exclusive opportunity to choose from a wide range of top-rated resume writers. By sharing their requirements, clients are matched with multiple writers who possess the relevant background and industry expertise. This empowers clients to make an informed decision and select the writer they prefer to collaborate with, simplifying the entire process.

Get started with a quiz

Here's how the PRW process works. First, take the resume quiz and provide details about your goals and current job situation. Based on this information, Craft Resumes recommends suitable packages. Once a choice is made, you get to check the availability of PRW's top resume writers and select the one that feels like the best fit for you. Next, you collaborate with the writer to develop the first draft, providing feedback and suggesting edits until it meets your satisfaction. Finally, the completed resume is delivered once it's been proofread and polished.

Best Resume Writers

Higher-than-average prices

Unfortunately, the place that PRW doesn't stand out is its pricing. This service has a higher cost than average. There are three different tiers and the cheapest one available costs $397, which is much higher than many other starting costs from resume services in our review. Without any particular stand-out features to justify the higher price, the numbers at PRW leave us scratching our heads a little.

3 resume writing tiers

The three resume writing tiers offered by PRW include a resume-only package, a resume and cover letter package, and finally a package with a resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, and a networking workshop. The pricing levels listed are:

  • Resume only: $397
  • Resume and Cover Letter: $497
  • Resume, Cover Letter, LinkedIn, and Networking workshop: $697

100% satisfaction guarantee

One of the top features of PRW is its satisfaction guarantee. The resumes delivered by the writing professionals here are supported by a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you're not completely satisfied with the result, just reach out to customer support. In that case, the satisfaction guarantee kicks in and PRW will assign another writer to redo your resume until you're thrilled with it.

Best Resume Writers

Business is too small for buzz

As a smaller business, there isn't a lot out there for PRW. While there are a few reviews on the PRW website, there isn't any presence for this service on the Better Business Bureau or any well-known third-party review sites. While this doesn't mean the service isn't worth it, it makes it harder to compare to other resume writing options that do have rave reviews to support the business.

Middle-ground service

Looking over the features at PRW, it isn't a bad service, but it also doesn't stand out. The prices are higher than competitors, and while they seem to be trying to match top writers with customers, there aren't any reviews to verify how well this is working out for the clients at the end of the process. They do have a 100% satisfaction guarantee, which is helpful in soothing any worries customers might have. However, considering the guarantees at other services with better pricing, PRW ranks as just average on our list.

Resume Companion Review

  • $2.95 for 14-day trial
  • $24.99 per month for full service
  • Free templates for DIYers
  • Blogs for professional development

Resume Companion has been a trusted resource for job seekers since 2009, offering assistance with cover letters and resume writing. They proudly state that they have assisted over a million job seekers from 186 countries, demonstrating their extensive experience in the field. Resume Companion, since its inception, promises that it has been dedicated to its mission of assisting individuals in securing employment and attaining career success.

Plenty of free resources

Resume Companion provides a one-stop shop for job-search materials. On top of resumes, the site also provides valuable tips for interview skills and career advice to support job seekers in all aspects of their job search journey. This site stands out in its free offerings: for customers who really want to DIY their resumes, there are plenty of blogs and templates to help job seekers put together their own resumes without paying a dime. However, when it comes to paid services, Resume Companion doesn't stand out as well as other services on our list.

Start from scratch or from templates

When it comes to writing a resume with Resume Companion, there are multiple paths you can take. You can start by simply selecting the "Build a Resume in Minutes" option at the top of the website, which provides a quick and convenient way to create your resume. Alternatively, you can browse through their wide selection of templates, categorized as modern, professional, simple, creative, or career & life resume templates. Each category offers eight different resume styles to choose from, giving you the flexibility to find a design that suits your preferences.

Best Resume Writers

Free templates available

Before you pay for anything, you should check out the Resume Companion's free service. This is perfect for users who just want a little formatting help for their resume. The process works by selecting a template and downloading that template to your computer. Then, it's up to you to make the necessary edits to customize it according to your experience. Just remember, this is best for the DIY folks. If you want step-by-step help with your resume, you'll want to check out the paid options instead.

Monthly payment plan for documents

Similar to other similar services, Resume Companion offers free resume and cover letter building without any charges. However, once users get to the download part of the process, they are required to sign up for a 14-day trial for $2.95. This trial will extend automatically and turn into a monthly payment plan. So, if you don't remember to terminate your trial, you will be charged $24.95 per month. On the other hand, this is still much cheaper than other resume writing services out there. But if you only need one document and you keep getting charged, you may find that frustrating.

Professional development blogs

One of the standout features of Resume Companion is its page that helps you develop your own resume writing skills. This is a perfect area for DIYers who want to be able to update or work on their resumes without paying for the service. The free blogs cover topics such as:

  • How to Write a Resume
  • How to Write a Cover Letter
  • Skills for Resume
  • Best Font for Resume

There are even more options than these, and each covers a topic that helps customers design and work on their resumes beyond just paying someone for a one-time service, which is amazing.

Best Resume Writers

Only a 2-star service

Unfortunately, Resume Companion isn't the top performer in terms of reviews. First, there aren't a lot of reviews out there. Additionally, as we searched for the company on the Better Business Bureau, we couldn't find a page for Resume Companion or its parent company, Sonaga Tech Limited. There's a little bit of feedback for Resume Companion on third-party review sites, but there are just over 20 total reviews, and these aren't too impressive. The average rating for Resume Companion is only 2 out of 5 stars. This knocks Resume Companion down in our esteem quite a bit and affects its rating significantly in this review.

Not a stand-out service but good for free learning

Looking at Resume Companion against other companies, we can confidently say that its free learning blogs and templates are the best features. The pricing isn't too bad, but for a subscription service, this site doesn't offer a lot of bonuses. Customers aren't giving Resume Companion a lot of happy reviews with only 2-star ratings being the average score - and if customers aren't happy with their resume results, we don't want to recommend them to you. Check out the higher-ranked resume writing services on our list if you use the free features here and decide you want some professional input on your resume.

Craft Resumes Review

  • Pricing from $139.99+ for resumes
  • Full pricing from $139.99 to $629.99 for resume and extras
  • Offers same-day resume generation

Craft Resumes is a service that covers all the major points of the job search including resume and CV writing, resume editing, cover letter writing, LinkedIn profile optimization, and even thank-you and follow-up letters. They've got a squad of writers who specialize in different industries and work closely with you to draft a personalized resume that shows off your skills and experience. However, with a few quirky problems on the site and an almost non-existent review presence, this service isn't as exciting as we were expecting.

Needs more transparency

With years of experience under their belts, the professionals at Craft Resumes are Certified Professional Resume Writers specializing in various industries, dedicated to helping job seekers create attention-grabbing resumes that impress employers. However, no matter how much we dug, we couldn't find an exact start date for Craft Resumes, nor any presence for it on the Better Business Bureau. Keep in mind, that this doesn't mean it isn't a good service, it's just missing a little transparency in its story.

Same-day service

In general, Craft Resumes offers a quick and efficient service, allowing customers to spend just one hour online and receive their desired result within 24 hours. Once an order is placed, a one-to-one interview with a writer is arranged via Skype, Viber, or phone, and the first draft of the document can be delivered within 24 hours. The process is quick and easy and your writer will personally work with you to ensure the final product is exactly what you need.

Best Resume Writers

Pricy, but transparent about fees

The pricing at Craft Resumes is a little complicated, but at least there aren't any problems with transparency. First, there are three different types of resumes you can choose from: Entry, Professional, and Executive. Then, within these three types of resumes, there are four different packages to choose from. Of these options, you can select from Resume Writing, which is exactly what it says: just a new resume with keyword optimization and style; the Basic Package which includes the resume and adds a cover letter to the package; the Optimal Package which includes everything from Basic and adds a LinkedIn makeover; and finally the All-in-One package which includes everything in the Optimal package and adds career coaching and 24/7 support as well as pre-written thank-you letters for your job search.

Pricing plans

As you can imagine the pricing changes drastically with each package. Overall, these prices are on the high end, especially the price for just the resume. If budget is one of your primary concerns, this might not be the best service for you. Here's what it looks like all in one place:

  • Resume Writing: $139.99
  • Basic: $179.99
  • Optimal: $229.99
  • All-in-one: $399.99
  • Professional
  • Resume Writing: $229.00
  • Basic: $279.99
  • Optimal: $339.99
  • All-in-one: $499.99
  • Resume Writing: $339.00
  • Basic: $379.99
  • Optimal: $449.99
  • All-in-one: $629.99

Some weird typos on the site

While we were impressed overall with Craft Resumes' packages and their website in general, there were a few quirks that made us wonder a bit about their quality. For example in two of the three types of resumes, the pricing was listed with commas instead of periods in their price brackets. This made the $139.99 resume writing service for entry-level jobs look like it cost thousands instead of just under $140. While this is a small thing, it's not super impressive for a writing service to have major typos like this on their website. Especially not if you want customers to feel comfortable about the quality of proofreading.

Best Resume Writers

Missing reviews and BBB presence

In terms of reviews, there isn't a lot of information out there for Craft Resumes. For example, the company doesn't have any presence on the Better Business Bureau. On top of that, there are almost no reviews for Craft Resumes on most third-party review sites. There are only a handful of reviews from Trustpilot. While these are overall high scores in general with a 4.3 out of 5, there are just over 10 reviews on the platform. We did see positive feedback; for example, one customer called Craft Resumes "game-changing" . But we'd love to see more buzz for Craft Resumes. It's possible this company is too new to have a lot of reviews, but it doesn't make them a top competitor in this review.

Not the resume writing service we'd choose

In general, there are a lot of good things happening at Craft Resumes. However, there are some bumps in the road that knock this service down to the bottom of our list. A resume writing service with typos doesn't generate confidence for potential customers who might be worried about similar errors showing up in the final resume. Further, Craft Resumes has very little review presence, so it's hard to judge if their quality promises on the site are reflected in what customers are seeing in the final product. With these factors in mind, this service just doesn't compete with the higher-ranking resume writing options in our evaluation.

Using resume writing services provides a range of benefits for job seekers, including expert advice on resume structure, tailored content that aligns with your career goals, and the ability to showcase your accomplishments in a compelling manner. By collaborating with skilled resume writers, you can ensure that your resume not only meets industry standards but also stands out as a unique representation of your qualifications.

With the abundance of resume writing services available, it can be overwhelming to choose the right one for your needs. It's important to select a service that understands your industry and has a track record of success in helping individuals like you land those dream jobs.

If you're not sure where to start, here are a few things to look for:

  • Price: If you're searching for a new job, odds are you don't want to be burning extra cash when you don't need to be. There are tons of pricing options for resume writing services. Some offer free trials and others start in the hundreds. Knowing how much you're willing to spend on a resume is important to help you narrow your options.
  • Hands-on or DIY: Are you looking for a resume writing service to take your work history and make some magic? Or do you want to be involved in the process? Some services are better for DIYers than others, so if you want to work on your own resume, keep an eye out for services that offer free or low-cost templates. If you don't want to touch your resume until it's ready to submit, there are plenty of full-service options out there just for you.
  • Range of services: Not all resume services are the same. Some focus only on the basics: resumes and cover letters. Others offer a total package including updates for your LinkedIn profile as well as thank-yous or follow-up letters for employers. So, it may help you to decide what exactly you want updated: just your resume or something more comprehensive?
  • Success stories: Getting a new resume isn't super helpful if you don't get the interviews from it, right? Keeping an eye on the reviews and feedback from customers as well as a company's BBB ratings can help you get a clear idea whether a resume writing service is turning out job-finding resumes or not.

10 Best Resume Writing Services for 2024

Two professional women collaborating while seated across from each other at a conference table. Both people are holding printed resumes in their hands. Their expressions are happy.

Every month, there are over 5,000 searches for phrases like "best resume writing service."

You’ll find results for local and national options, as well as professional resume writers in different industries.

While browsing the listings, you’ll notice hundreds of companies and freelancers offering resume writing services that appear to be quite shady. Since your resume can get your foot in the door and help you land the right job, it’s important to select a quality service that gets you results.

To help take the guesswork out of choosing the right resume service for you, our team of career experts researched more than 200 resume services for job seekers in the US and Canada. This post discusses our top picks, as well as an overview of each resume service.

At the end of this post, we have some valuable advice about how to tell if other service reviews are legitimate.

Before you buy: how to find legitimate service reviews

This list does not include any affiliate links or paid placements.

Should you use a local or national service?

While searching for resume services, you will find both national and local results. The only time you would choose to use a local service is when you are meeting the writer face to face.

The majority of local services will work with you virtually (not in person) so you may be better off hiring a national company that has access to a wide network of writers and an  ATS resume test  built into the process.

We found that the average cost of a quality resume is around $157 . This number doesn't reflect add-on offers like LinkedIn profiles, career advice, or cover letter services.

ZipJob homepage. Text reads "resumes that get you hired: achieve more with a resume that displays your strengths, works with recruiting software, and earns you interviews" and picture shows a woman with curly hair and an orange shirt talking to a bearded man in a suit with a cup of coffee between them.

View Services

You didn't think we were going to put a different service here, did you? Yes, our team may be biased...but we also live and breathe resume writing, so we know why our service is top-notch.

ZipJob uses a tech-informed, expert-designed protocol to create resumes that appeal to hiring managers and Applicant Tracking Systems : the same technology used by more than 90% of employers to screen and parse resumes.

ZipJob’s resume writing services are designed for companies hiring in the USA and Canada, which is where all of the writers are located. Most companies use applicant tracking systems to manage and sort through job applicants. A single job post averages 250 applicants, so the ATS helps employers keep track of those applications.

However, the ATS has another important job: filtering out the resumes that don’t meet the pre-set requirements. On average, applicant tracking systems filter out 75% of the resumes submitted. Here are the most common reasons applicants get rejected automatically:

Improper resume formatting

Incorrect use of keywords

So if the ATS can mistakenly reject otherwise qualified candidates, what does that mean for you? That's exactly what ZipJob is here to help with.

Resume writers experienced in resume keyword optimization add an extra step at the end of the process to ensure your new resume will be parsed correctly by an ATS scan.

Pros of using ZipJob

Professional writers  — ZipJob only hires professional resume writers with experience and ATS training.

60-Day interview guarantee — ZipJob guarantees that you’ll get at least 200% as many interviews or we will rewrite your resume for free.

ATS technology —  ZipJob uses the same ATS technology employers use to help ensure every resume gets through to a hiring manager.

Direct communication  — One of the few services that allow you direct, unlimited access to your personal resume writer until your project is complete.

Reputation  — ZipJob’s reputation speaks for itself. ZipJob has been featured in  Forbes ,  Reader’s Digest ,  Marketwatch ,  Glassdoor ,  The Muse , and other big-name media outlets. ZipJob is accredited by the Better Business Bureau. In addition, ZipJob has earned more than  800 five-star reviews and 10,000+ happy clients.

A ZipJob review

"I spent a lot of time researching resume writing services. That was quite a feat and stressful with everything out there. I finally decided on ZipJob...After several revisions we hit on a resume that appears to be working. Prior to my latest revision I had sent out close to hundred resumes and had one interview. I've put out about another 40, and I've had movement in making it past the ATS system to pretesting with 2 jobs and an initial interview with another job. Considering this is the holidays and we're in a pandemic I'm heartened by the response. Thank you ZipJob and Julie!" -Floyd, verified ZipJob customer

Note: this review was edited slightly for length and clarity.

How ZipJob works

Upload your resume and answer a few questions. If you don't have a current resume, these questions will help your writer get started on your new resume from scratch.

Get matched with a resume expert in your field who will overhaul your resume. Each project focuses on ATS-friendly formatting, keyword optimization, and value-focused language.

Collaborate directly with your writer through multiple revisions until you're satisfied with your resume.

Approve a final draft. This will trigger the last step in ZipJob's resume writing process: the ATS resume test . Your new resume will go through our in-house system to ensure that your resume will pass through recruitment software used by more than 90% of employers.

Start using your new resume and watch your interview requests triple!

You can contact ZipJob by phone at (888) 944-9929 or via live chat from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET. You can also email customer service any time at  [email protected] .

2. LinkedIn

LinkedIn ProFinder

Pricing : $250 – $700+

Turnaround : 3 to 14 days

Writers : 100+

Industries : All industries including Finance, IT, Healthcare, Marketing and more.

Most people use LinkedIn to search for jobs and career-related information. However, many are unaware that it offers a “service marketplace” called LinkedIn Services (formerly LinkedIn ProFinder) for interviewing, career coaching, and resume writing.

Technically, yes, this is a platform and not a resume writing service. However, we are rating this option highly because LinkedIn takes steps to ensure its pros are legit. For example, each professional submits an online application that must be approved by LinkedIn, and past client reviews are readily available for anyone considering a certain resume writer.

Pros of using LinkedIn

Time efficient  — Receive proposals quickly from your potential resume writer.

Person to person  — Pick from a number of resume critique and expert review professionals whom you want to work with, based on their LinkedIn profiles and other information they provide.

Cost effective  — Since these are resume critique and expert review freelancers, the prices may be more competitive than a company. Still expect to pay $150+ for a quality resume, but know that your money is going directly to your writer.

Local options  — You can opt for local-only professionals, making this a great option if you feel strongly about meeting with your resume writer in person.

LinkedIn Profinder Process 2

Speaking of LinkedIn, do you know  how to include your LinkedIn URL on a resume ? Most employers will look you up on LinkedIn before interviewing you anyway, so it's common to include a link to your profile in your resume's contact section.

Working with LinkedIn

Answer a couple of questions about the services you’re looking for.

Within 24 hours (and likely much sooner), get up to 5 proposals from professionals on LinkedIn’s list. Each proposal will include a price quote.

Research and select your resume writer. Every writer will have a different system to process from there.

LinkedIn helps you find freelance resume writers, but doesn’t have a company-wide standard for resume writing. Instead, you should look into multiple freelancers based on their proposals and pick the resume style you like best as not all freelancers are created equal.

If you need any help, LinkedIn offers a concierge team, which is essentially tech support and customer service for hiring a pro. You can use live chat or a contact form to reach out.

3. TopResume

Best Resume Writers: TopResume.

Pricing : $149 – $349

Turnaround : 7 to 14 days

Writers : 1,500+ professional writers including certified career coaches, recruiters, and experienced hiring professionals.

Industries : All industries including Military transition, Academic, and Federal resumes.

This list would not be complete without TopResume. TopResume is technically one of our direct competitors, but any list of the best resume writing services would be incomplete (and misleading) if we omitted them. Their writers do great work--as evidenced by their Trustpilot reviews --and the company does belong on this list.

One of the most common questions is if TopResume is legit. The answer, from our professional perspective, is that they are legit. Look at real reviews on unbiased review sites and check out our tips later in this article on how to spot a resume writing service scam.

TopResume’s website includes many compelling statistics about working with a professional resume writer. According to its research, a professionally written resume makes you:

38% more likely to be contacted by recruiters

31% more likely to land an interview

40% more likely to land a job

History of success  — According to its website, TopResume has helped 600,000+ professionals “land more interviews and get hired faster.” You can check out some of their success stories here .

Positive reviews  — Given how big it is, TopResume has had the opportunity to help thousands of people. It has more than 7,000 five star reviews on Trustpilot .

A ResumeSpice review

"Caitlin was amazing!! I was changing careers after being in the financial industry for 24 years. She revamped my resume, provided amazing cover letters explaining my transition and also provided me with a Thank You letter and updated my LinkedIn profile. Caitlin totally got me and made me look like a superstar/qualified candidate!!

I worked with Kathy on my Interview skills since I hadn't interviewed in 24 years, to say I was rusty was an understatement lol. Kathy provided me with helpful documents and amazing answers to interview questions I found to be annoying and difficult. Kathy gave me the confidence to nail my interviews!! TOTALLY worth the money!!”

How to write a competitive resume in 2021.

Here's what you need to know to make your resume stand out in 2021.

Tell me if this sounds familiar: You’ve been on the job search for a while. You’ve been coming across a lot of listings that you are interested in. You know that you have qualifications and the right profile for these jobs, but you’re just not getting any follow-through or calls back.

The problem here could very well be in your resume. You may be exactly right that you’re a good fit for the potential jobs to which you are applying, but you may not be nailing your resume.

You may think creating an effective resume is as simple as hitting the marks with your relevant experience. Think again.

You may imagine a benevolent hiring manager leaning back in their chair with a printed copy of your resume, smiling and circling relevant details. In fact, your resume is more likely to meet the cold, unfeeling algorithm of an AI before it ever makes it to a human. In fact, only around 25% of resumes ever make it through the algorithm to a HR professional.

The good news is that, these days, there are so many amazing resources to help you write a killer resume that is certain to hit the mark when it comes to beating the algorithms and setting you up for job-seeking success.

Here is what you need to know about writing an effective resume, as well as some of the best online tools to get the job done.

What is an ATS?

Best Travel Insurance Companies

Best covid-19 travel insurance plans.

The first thing to keep in mind about navigating resume-writing in 2021 is that before your resume ever gets in front of a recruiter or a hiring manager, you’re likely to have to pass through an ATS.

So, what is an ATS? I’m sure if you’ve been navigating the online job search, you’ve seen this term floating around.

ATS stands for Applicant Tracking System . An Applicant Tracking System is a software program utilized by hiring professionals to streamline the process of screening candidates.

Sometimes referred to as a talent management system, ATS software programs handle many aspects of the hiring process from using algorithms to sort applications and resumes to collecting information and scheduling interviews. These days, 90% of companies are using ATS software in their hiring processes.

But what does this mean for a candidate? Well, the most important feature of an ATS that job applicants must consider is the resume scanning tools. ATS systems are often the first stop for your application and resume. The ATS will scan your resume for relevant information, especially keywords, and determine whether or not to advance your application to the next phase.

All of this can happen before your resume ever makes it to a hiring manager, meaning before you can even be considered, you have to beat the algorithm.

Before I jump into some of the great online resources available to help you write an ATS-compatible resume, let’s start with some of the basic boxes to check to make sure that your resume is up to snuff.

A recent study by Cultivated Culture analyzed over 125,000 resumes in hopes of determining the most important aspects of an effective resume.  Here are some great takeaways, as well as some tips I’ve learned by guiding my clients through generating resumes that will play nice with an ATS:

  • Keywords are key: When it comes to ATS, keywords are the name of the game. ATS will usually compare your resume against a job description in order to determine how well you meet the criteria for certain positions. The Cultivate Culture study found that the average resume only utilized 51% of relevant keywords. Scan job descriptions to make sure that you are hitting keywords in the description in your resume.
  • Include your LinkedIn profile in your resume. Many people don’t think to include their LinkedIn profile link in their resume. In fact, only 48% of resumes reference a LinkedIn profile. Including your LinkedIn profile has been shown to boost your chances of landing an interview.
  • Don’t get too wordy. A lot of people exceed the ideal word length for their resume, which research shows to be between 475–600. Data shows that resumes over 600 words are 43% less hireable . And yet 77% of resumes are outside the ideal range. So, when it comes to word length, sometimes less is more.
  • Formatting and word choice matter. You may be tempted to show off your InDesign skills or your English-major vocabulary, but when it comes to creating a resume that will pass the ATS test, simplicity is your friend. Simple formatting and headers such as “skills” and “experience” will help to ensure that your resume is processed right. The Muse offers some more helpful tips on formatting.

With all this in mind as you embark on writing your new resume, here are some great online tools that will help you put your best foot forward in the first steps of the hiring process.

ResyMatch.io

ResyMatch is an awesome free service created by Cultivated Culture. I love the simplicity of its functions.

You upload or paste your resume on one side of the page, and input the job descriptions and simple metrics on the other side. It’s as simple as that.

From there, ResyMatch uses technology very similar to an ATS system that would represent the first step of your resume’s journey to the eyes of a hiring manager.

From there, ResyMatch will generate a score based on how closely your resume matches up to the job description. You also get a breakdown of areas that you could improve your resume to better align with the job description.

The best part: ResyMatch is truly free. You’ll never have to set a reminder to cancel after your first free month. For a great free software that is simple and intuitive, ResyMatch gets my vote.

If you’re looking for a resume scanner that boasts some more robust features, Jobscan is an excellent tool.

Similar to ResyMatch, Jobscan can help you analyze your resume alongside a job description, and assess areas for improvement, including in-depth breakdowns of how the skills on your resume match the skills posted in a job description.

But the Jobscan features go above and beyond. Not all ATS software is created equal, nor will they necessarily behave the same way. Jobscan has data on which ATS software companies are using, and can provide specific tips for how to best align your resume for a certain company’s hiring software, including the majority of Fortune 500 companies!

Jobscan is also a great place to organize your job search, by allowing you to keep track of jobs you’ve applied for, and create data based on how your job search is going.

The list of excellent Jobscan features for your job search goes on and on. They have excellent resume templates, really great cover letter writing features, and even tools to help you optimize your LinkedIn profile.

Overall, Jobscan is an excellent choice as a one-stop-shop for streamlining your resume building, job search and application process.

If you’re looking for an excellent tool to help compare your resume in real time as you are going about your job search, JobSeer is one of my recent favorite tools.

One of the reasons I love JobSeer is that it works as a browser extension for Chrome, thereby allowing you to integrate it into your existing workflow when it comes to job searching on your favorite career platforms.

Here’s how it works: you create a profile on your new JobSeer account, and upload your resume. Then you can head to your favorite place to look for jobs, and open the JobSeer extension.

To start a search, you will input some of your desired job titles, your skills, location, and other metrics related to potential job listings. Once you’ve inputted this information, JobSeer will conduct a scan of job listings and provide a customized search based on your individual metrics.

Here’s where it gets interesting: for each of the jobs in a given search, JobSeer will provide you with a score based on how well your resume matches a certain job listing, including a breakdown of which skills you have listed on your resume are relevant for a certain job, and which skills are missing.

This data gives you the opportunity to see exactly what matches and doesn’t match about your resume, helping you to create a resume that is a better fit for a given job description by adding the skills you might be missing to your resume—provided that you really have those skills of course!

JobSeer also offers other amazing features, such as an estimated salary generator, and up to five free email addresses per day related to your job search to help you connect with potential recruiters or even other employees with whom you might have a connection. JobSeer even offers a “company insights” section, which gives you data based on a company's size, revenue and other relevant information.

I love this program, because it offers such functionality, while still allowing a user to navigate their job search on their favorite platforms such as Indeed, LinkedIn or Google.

One downside of the program is that it is designed to work only with the Google Chrome browser. So if you are a Safari or Firefox loyalist, you may have to cave and download Chrome. All in all, though, I think it’s a small price to pay for such excellent job search and resume-writing functionality.

In many ways, the advent of online job searches has made life for job seekers and recruiters alike more streamlined. However, it can also be very intimidating, especially when you consider all the ways in which AI-based recruiting tools such as ATSs can trip up your job search.

But fear not, with a good understanding of how these systems work, and a little help from some of the many excellent online resume and job seeking tools, your resume writing and online job search can be more informed and targeted than ever before.

How to Make a Resume in 2024 | Beginner's Guide

Background Image

For most job-seekers, a good resume is what stands between a dream job and Choice D. Get your resume right, and you’ll be getting replies from every other company you apply to.

If your resume game is weak, though, you’ll end up sitting around for weeks, maybe even months, before you even get a single response.

So you’re probably wondering how you can write a resume that gets you an interview straight up.

Well, you’ve come to the right place!

In this guide, we’re going to teach you everything you need to know about how to make a resume, including:

  • The 8 Essential Steps to Writing a Resume
  • 11+ Exclusive Resume Tips to Up Your Resume Game
  • 27+ Real-Life Resume Examples for Different Professions

….and more!

So, let’s dive right in.

How to Make a Resume (The Right Way!)

Before we go into detail about how you should make a resume, here’s a summary of the most important steps and tips to keep in mind:

how to write a resume

  • Choose a resume format carefully. In 99% of cases, we recommend the reverse-chronological format .
  • Add the right contact details. Leave your headshot out and make sure to include your job title , a professional email address, and any relevant links. (E.g.: your LinkedIn profile , online portfolio, personal website, etc.).
  • Write an impactful resume summary. Unless you’re an entry-level professional, always go for a resume summary. If you do it right, it’s your chance to get the hiring manager to go through the rest of your resume in detail.
  • Pay attention to your work experience section. Take your work experience section from OK-ish to exceptional by tailoring it to the job ad, making your achievements quantifiable, and using action verbs and power words.
  • Add the right skills for the job. Keep this section relevant by only including the hard and soft skills that are required for the position.
  • Keep your education short and to the point. Your most recent and highest degree is more than enough for a strong education section. You only need to add more details here if you’re a recent graduate with barely any work experience.
  • Leverage optional resume sections. Optional sections like languages, hobbies, certifications, independent projects, and others can set you apart from other candidates with similar skills and experience.
  • Include a cover letter. That’s right, cover letters matter in 2024, and the best way to supplement your resume is by adding an equally well-crafted cover letter to your job application. To make the most of it, check out our detailed guide on how to write a cover letter .

#1. Pick the Right Resume Format

Before you start filling in the contents of your resume, you have to make sure it’s going to look good.

After all, the first thing hiring managers notice is what your resume looks like, and then they start reading it. So, this is your best chance to make a great first impression.

Start by choosing the right resume format.

There are three types of resume formats out there:

  • Reverse-chronological. This is by far the most popular resume format worldwide and, as such, it’s the best format for most job-seekers.
  • Functional. This resume format focuses more on skills than work experience. It’s a good choice if you’re just getting started with your career and have little to no experience in the field.
  • Combination. The combination resume format is a great choice for experienced job-seekers with a very diverse skill set. It’s useful if you’re applying for a role that requires expertise in several different fields and you want to show all that in your resume.

So, which one should you go for?

In 99% of cases, you want to stick to the reverse-chronological resume format . It’s the most popular format and what hiring managers expect to see. So, in the rest of this guide, we’re going to focus on teaching you how to make a reverse-chronological resume.

reverse chronological resume

Fix Your Resume’s Layout

With formatting out of the way, let’s talk about your resume’s layout , which determines the overall look of your resume.

Does it look organized or cluttered? Is it too short or too long? Is it boring and easy to ignore, or is it reader-friendly and attention-grabbing?

Here are some of the best practices you should apply:

  • Stick to one page. You should only go for a two-page resume if you have decades of experience and you’re sure the extra space will add significant value. Hiring managers in big companies get hundreds of applications per job opening. They’re not going to spend their valuable time reading your life story!
  • Add clear section headings. Pick a heading and use it for all the section headers so the hiring manager can easily navigate through your resume.
  • Adjust the margins. Without the right amount of white space, your resume will end up looking overcrowded with information. Set your margins to one inch on all sides so your text fits just right on the page.
  • Choose a professional font. We’d recommend sticking to a font that’s professional but not overused. For example, Ubuntu, Roboto, or Overpass. Avoid Times New Roman, and never use Comic Sans.
  • Set the correct font size. As a rule of thumb, go for 11-12 pt for normal text and 14-16 pt for section titles.
  • Use a PDF file. Always save your resume as a PDF file, unless the employer specifically requests otherwise. Word files are popular, but there’s a good chance they’ll mess up your resume’s formatting.

Another thing you need to consider in terms of your resume’s layout is whether you’re going for a traditional-looking resume template or something a bit more modern :

traditional vs modern resume

If you’re pursuing a career in a more traditional industry, like law , banking , or finance , you might want to stick to the first.

But if you’re applying to a tech company where imagination and innovation are valued, you can pick a more creative resume template .

Want to Save Time? Use a (Free) Resume Template

Anyone who’s ever tried creating a resume from scratch knows how boring the formatting can be.

Before you can even start filling in the contents, you need to tweak the margins, adjust font sizes, and make sure everything fits into one page while still looking good.

What if you could skip past all that and still create a compelling resume?

Try one of our free resume templates . They’re pre-formatted, so all you have to do is fill in the contents.

They’re also created in collaboration with recruiters from around the globe, ensuring that the templates are visually appealing and ATS-friendly!

See for yourself how one of our templates compares to a resume created in a standard text editor:

#2. Add Your Contact Information

Now that we’ve got all the formatting out of the way, let’s get into what your resume is all about— the information you put on it .

The first thing you want to do when filling out the contents of your resume is to add your contact information .

This section is pretty straightforward but crucial. Your contact details belong at the top of your resume in a designated resume header , so the hiring manager can easily find them.

Even if everything else about your resume is perfect, that all flops if you misspell your email address or have a typo in your phone number. If the hiring manager can’t contact you, it’s a missed opportunity.

So, double-check, and even triple-check your contact information section and make sure everything is factually correct and up-to-date.

Must-Have Information

  • Full name. Your first and last name should stand out at the top of your resume.
  • Email address. Stick to an address that’s professional and easy to spell, like a combination of your first and last name. (E.g.: [email protected])
  • Phone number. Add a reliable number where the hiring manager can easily reach you.
  • Location. Add your city and state/country. If you plan to relocate for the job or want a remote position, specify it on your resume.

Optional Information

  • Job title. Add your professional title underneath. Write it down word for word, whether it’s “Digital Marketing Specialist” or “Junior Data Scientist.” Just don’t make up job titles like “Marketing Wizzard” or “Data Manipulator.” They’re not quirky; they’re just unprofessional.
  • LinkedIn profile . We recommend that you include a link to your updated LinkedIn profile since over 77% of hiring managers use the platform when evaluating a candidate.
  • Relevant links. Include links to personal websites or any social media profiles that are relevant to your field. For example, a developer could include a Github profile, while a graphic designer could link their Behance or Driblle account, and so on.
  • Date of birth. Unless this is specifically required in the job ad, the hiring manager doesn’t need to know how old you are. It’s not important for their decision-making, and at worst, it might lead to age-based discrimination.
  • Unprofessional email address. Your quirky, old high school email address doesn’t belong on your resume. Instead of [email protected] , go for a [email protected] type of address.
  • Headshot. (USA, UK or Ireland) Depending on the country where you’re applying, it might even be illegal to include a picture of yourself on your resume . While it’s the norm to include a picture in most of Europe and Asia, always check the regulations for each specific country or industry you’re applying to.

All clear? Good! Now, let’s look at what a great example of a resume's contact information section looks like:

professional resume contact section

#3. Write a Resume Headline (Summary or Objective)

It's no secret that recruiters spend an average of less than seven seconds on a resume .

When you receive hundreds, if not thousands, of applications daily, it's physically impossible to spend too much time on each.

So, what the hiring managers do to go through resumes more effectively is to skim through each resume and read it in depth only if it piques their interest.

This is where the resume headline comes in.

Placed right next to (or underneath) your contact information, this brief paragraph is the first thing the hiring manager is going to read on your resume.

Now, depending on how far along in your career you are, your resume headline can be either a resume summary or a resume objective.

resume summary professional

So, how do you choose between a resume summary and a resume objective? Here’s all you need to know:

Resume Summary

A resume summary, as the name suggests, is a two to three-sentence summary of your career so far. If done right, it shows that you’re a qualified candidate at a glance and gets the hiring manager to give you a chance.

Here’s what your resume summary should include:

  • Your job title and years of experience.
  • A couple of your greatest professional achievements or core responsibilities.
  • Your most relevant skills for the job.

Here’s an example of a well-written resume summary:

Experienced Java Developer with 5 years of experience in building scalable and efficient applications. Contributed to a major project that enhanced application performance by 25%. Strong background in Spring Framework and microservices. Aiming to apply robust coding skills to develop innovative software solutions at XYZ Tech Solutions.

Unless you’re a recent graduate or amid a career change, we recommend you stick to a resume summary. Otherwise, a resume objective might be a better option for you.

Resume Objective

A resume objective is supposed to express your professional goals and aspirations, academic background, and any relevant skills you may have for the job.

It communicates your motivation for getting into a new field, so it’s the go-to headline for recent graduates and those going through a career change. As with a resume summary, a resume objective should be brief—around two to four sentences long.

So, here’s what it would look like if you’re a student:

Hard-working recent graduate with a B.A. in Graphic Design from New York State University seeking new opportunities. 3+ years of practical experience working with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, creating illustrations and UX/UI design projects. Looking to grow as a designer and perfect my art at XYZ Design Studio.

Or, on the other hand, if you’re going through a career change, it might look more like this:

IT project manager with 5+ years of experience in software development. Managed a team of developers to create products for several industries, such as FinTech and HR tech. Looking to leverage my experience in managing outsourced products as a Product Owner at Company XYZ.

#4. Prioritize Your Work Experience

The most important part of your resume is your work experience.

This is where you get to sell yourself and show off your previous accomplishments and responsibilities.

If you manage to master this section, you’ll know most of what’s there to know about how to make a resume.

There are plenty of good practices for writing your work experience . But before we dive into all the nits and grits, let's start with the basics.

The standard format for each work experience entry is as follows:

  • Job title/position. Your job title goes on top of each work experience entry. When the hiring manager looks at your resume, you want them to know, at a glance, that you have relevant work experience for the job.
  • Company name/location/description. Mention the name of the employer and the general location, such as the city and state/country where you worked. In some cases, you may also want to briefly describe the company, like when the organization isn’t particularly well-known.
  • Dates employed. Add the approximate timeframe of your employment at each company. You don’t need to give exact dates since the standard format for this is mm/yyyy.
  • Achievements and responsibilities. This is the core of each work experience entry. Depending on your field, you want to list either your achievements or responsibilities. List them in bullet points instead of paragraphs, so they’ll be easier to read.

Here’s a real-life example:

how to list work experience on a resume

Your work experience entries should always be listed in reverse chronological order , starting with your most recent job and working your way back into the past.

Now that you know how to list your experience, we’re going to show you how to write about it in a way that makes you stand out from the competition, starting with:

Are you a student with no work experience? We’ve got you covered. Check out our guide to writing a resume with no experience here.

Focus on Achievements Whenever Possible

One of the most common resume mistakes is only listing responsibilities in your work experience section.

Here’s the thing—in most cases, the hiring manager knows exactly what your job responsibilities are.

For example, if you’re a sales manager, your responsibilities would be:

  • Reach out to potential clients over the phone or email.
  • Maintain relationships with existing company clients and upsell relevant products.
  • Tracking and reporting on leads in CRM.

Coincidentally, this is also the same list of responsibilities for every sales manager out there. So, 90% of all other resumes probably mention the same thing.

To stand out from the competition, you want to focus on writing achievements in your resume instead. These can be how you helped your previous company grow, reach quarterly quotas, and so on.

Let’s compare how responsibilities hold up next to achievements for the same job:

  • Exceeded sales team KPIs by 30%+ for 3 months straight.
  • Generated over $24,000 in sales in 1 month.
  • Generated leads through cold-calling
  • Managed existing company clients

Keep in mind, though, that in some fields, there just aren’t that many achievements you can mention. Let’s say you’re a warehouse worker .

Your day-to-day responsibilities probably include:

  • Loading, unloading, and setting up equipment daily.
  • Packaging finished products and getting them ready for shipping.
  • Assisting in opening and closing the warehouse.

In fields like this, it’s pretty hard to distinguish yourself through achievements, so it’s okay to stick to responsibilities instead. You can still make them shine by following the rest of our advice about listing your work experience.

Keep in mind, though, that in some fields, there aren’t that many achievements you can mention. Let’s say you work in a warehouse. Your day-to-day responsibilities probably involve:

  • Loading, unloading and setting up equipment on a daily basis.
  • Package finished product and get it ready for shipping.
  • Assist in opening and closing the warehouse.

In such fields, it’s pretty hard to distinguish yourself, so it’s totally OK to stick to responsibilities instead.

Tailor Your Resume to the Job

Tailoring is what sets an amazing resume apart from an okay one.

Hiring managers don’t need to know about every single job you’ve ever worked at or every single skill that you have.

They only want to know about your jobs, experiences, or skills that are relevant to the role you’re applying for.

For example, if you’re applying for a job doing Google Ads, you don’t need to talk about your SEO internship from eight years ago.

By focusing your resume on whatever is important for the specific role, you’re a lot more likely to stand out and catch the hiring manager’s attention.

Let’s take a look at an example of a job ad:

how to tailor your resume to the job ad

As you can see, we’ve highlighted the most important requirements.

To tailor your resume accordingly, you just need to mention how you meet each of these requirements in your resume.

You can highlight your relevant achievements and qualifications in different parts of your resume, such as:

  • In your resume summary, where you should recap your years of experience.
  • Throughout your work experience section, where you should list achievements and responsibilities that reflect your social media marketing experience.
  • In your education section, where you can let the hiring manager know you have the degree that they’re looking for.

Include the Right Amount of Work Experience

If you’ve got over a decade’s worth of work experience, you’re probably wondering whether all of it belongs on your resume. In most cases, you’d end up writing a novel if you listed everything you’ve ever done, and that’s not how long a resume should be .

If you’re new to the job market, on the other hand, you probably don’t have any experience, and you’re wondering what you could even add to this section.

So, here’s how much information your resume should include, depending on your level of experience:

  • No experience. If you’re looking for your first job , you won’t have any work experience to fill this section with. So, you can either keep it empty and focus on all the other sections or fill it up with any experience gained in student organizations, extracurricular activities, volunteering, and other projects.
  • Entry-level. List all your work experience so far. While some of it won’t be relevant, it can still show the hiring manager that you do have some actual work experience.
  • Mid-level. Only mention relevant work experience to the position you’re applying for. There’s no need to waste space on jobs that aren’t related to what you’re after.
  • Senior-level. List up to 15 years of relevant work experience, tops. If your most recent experience is as a marketing executive , the hiring manager doesn’t care how you started your career as a junior marketing specialist 23 years ago.

Consider Applicant Tracking System (ATS) Software

Did you know that over 70% of resumes don’t even make it to the hiring manager ?

Most companies these days use ATS to evaluate hundreds of resumes instantaneously and automatically filter out the ones that don’t meet their criteria.

For example, if a resume doesn’t mention a specific skill or isn’t formatted correctly, the ATS will automatically reject it.

ats system statistic

Fortunately, there are some easy ways to make an ATS-friendly resume .

Here are a couple of tips to help you get past those pesky robots:

  • Stick to one page. Sometimes employers set a limit on how long a resume should be. This means that if your resume is longer than one page, it might get automatically disqualified.
  • Incorporate keywords. Tailoring your resume to the job helps a ton with beating the ATS. Just carefully read the job description to find hints for what the ATS will be looking for. Then, whenever you find keywords related to your responsibilities and achievements, make sure to include them in your work experience section.
  • Use an active voice. Passive voice is too vague and unclear, so make sure to use active voice as much as possible when describing your previous jobs. (E.g.: “Managed a team of ten people,” instead of “ A team of ten people was managed by me.” )
  • Leverage powerful action words. Instead of starting each of your sentences with “was responsible for," make your work experience impactful by using words that can grab attention. Saying that you “spearheaded” or “facilitated” something sounds a lot more impressive than “helped.”

#5. List Your Education

The next section on your resume is dedicated to your academic qualifications. Let’s start with the basics!

Here’s how you should format the education section on your resume :

  • Program Name. Your major and degree type should be listed. (E.g.: “B.A. in Business Administration” )
  • University Name. Add the name of the institution. (E.g.: “New York State University” )
  • Dates Attended. Use a mm/yyyy format for the dates you attended. (E.g.: “08/2008 - 06/2012” )
  • Location. If your university is less well-known, you can also add the location. (E.g.: “Stockholm, Sweden” )
  • GPA. Use the appropriate grading system for the country you’re applying to work in. (E.g.: In the USA, it would be “3.9 GPA” )
  • Honors. Add any honors and distinctions you’ve been given. (E.g.: Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude )
  • Achievements. You can mention interesting papers you’ve written, projects you’ve done, or relevant coursework you’ve excelled in.
  • Minor. “Minor in Psychology”

Pretty simple, right? Now let’s see what an education section looks like in practice:

This example includes all the necessary information, plus an eye-catching award and relevant classes this candidate has taken.

Resume Education Tips

Now that you know how to list your education on your resume, let’s take this section to the next level.

Just follow these expert tips:

  • If you’re making a resume as a student and don’t have any work experience yet, you can list your education section at the beginning of the page instead of work experience.
  • You can add your expected graduation date if you’re still pursuing your degree.
  • If you already have relevant work experience, just keep this section short and sweet. Recent graduates can expand on their education more and add optional information like projects, classes, academic achievements, etc.
  • Always list your degrees in reverse chronological order, starting with your highest degree on top. Your highest and most recent degree is usually enough, so if you have a Master’s degree that’s relevant to the job, there’s no need to mention your earlier degrees.
  • Don’t add your high school degree to your resume if you already have a university degree. It doesn’t have as much weight, and you can use the space for something else.
  • Only mention your GPA if you had an impressive academic career. Anything below a 3.5 GPA doesn’t need to be on your resume.

#6. Emphasize Your Know-How in the Skills Section

After your work experience, your skills are the first thing the hiring manager is going to look for. In fact, together, work experience and skills make up 90% of the hiring decision .

So, this is the place where you want to mention all the know-how that makes you the perfect candidate for the job.

There are two types of skills you can include when writing your resume:

  • Hard Skills. These are measurable abilities. What you can list here can be anything from coding in Python to knowing how to cook Thai cuisine.
  • Soft Skills. Also known as personal skills, these are a mix of communication skills , personal traits, career attributes, and more. They can include leadership, critical thinking, and time management , just to name a few.

Your resume should always cover both hard skills and soft skills . Here’s an example in action:

How to List Skills in Your Resume

Now, let’s discuss how you should list your most important skills on your resume.

There are a few essential steps you need to follow:

Always List Hard and Soft Skills Separately

Your resume should be easy and neat to navigate. The hiring manager shouldn’t have to waste time looking for a specific skill because you didn’t separate it into the appropriate subsection.

So, just create separate categories for your hard and soft skills.

Depending on your field, you could customize the name of your “hard skills” subsection to something like “technical skills," “marketing skills," or something else related to your field.

Let’s look at an example of what skills look like on a project manager’s resume :

Methodologies & Tools

  • Agile Methodology
  • SCRUM Framework
  • Waterfall Project Management
  • Microsoft Project
  • Critical Path Method (CPM)
  • Earned Value Management (EVM)
  • Risk Management

Soft Skills

  • Team Management
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Negotiation

Tailor Your Skills to the Job

You might have some awesome skills, but the hiring manager only needs to know about the ones that are relevant to the job.

For example, if you’re applying for a job as an accountant, your gourmet chef skills shouldn’t be on your resume.

Look at the job ad and list at least two to three essential skills you have that are required for the role. Remember—there’s no need to list every skill you have here; just keep it relevant.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Graphic Design or a related field.
  • Tech-savvy, with some background in CMS systems such as WordPress.
  • Thrives in a stressful environment and juggles multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Self-reliant, with the ability to manage their own work.
  • A can-do attitude and an outside-the-box thinker.
  • Proficient in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Keynote, and Pages.
  • Basic understanding of Office software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

So, the must-have hard skills here are Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Keynote, and Pages. Other good computer skills to have are WordPress or similar CMS systems.

While you can also mention Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, it’s pretty much assumed that you know how to use them since they’re required for most office jobs.

List Hard Skills with Experience Levels

For each hard skill you list on your resume, you should also mention your proficiency level. This tells employers what they can expect from you and how much training you might need.

  • Beginner. You have some experience with the skill, whether it’s from some entry-level practice or classroom education.
  • Intermediate. You’ve used the skill in a work environment with good understanding.
  • Advanced. You’re the go-to person for this skill in your office. You can coach other employees, and you understand the skill at a high level.
  • Expert. You’ve applied this skill to more than a handful of different projects and organizations. You’re the go-to person for advice about the skill, not just in your office but even amongst some of the best professionals in your field.

Just make sure to never lie about your actual skill level. Even if you get the job, once you need those skills you exaggerated, it will be pretty awkward for both you and your employer.

Include Transferable Skills

These are the types of skills that are useful for almost any job out there.

Transferable skills can be both soft skills (e.g.: teamwork, creativity, problem-solving skills, and others) and hard skills (MS Office Suite, HTML, writing, etc.)

Whatever job you’re applying to, chances are you have transferable skills from your experience that can come in handy one way or another. So, feel free to include them, even if they’re not specifically required for the position.

#7. Leverage Optional Resume Sections

The sections we’ve covered so far are must-haves for any resume. They’re the bread-and-butter for any job application, and if you get them right, you’ll land any job you apply to.

But if you have some leftover space, there are a few optional sections you can choose from to give your resume a boost!

other important resume sections

Are you bi-lingual? Or even better  – multi-lingual? You should always mention that on your resume!

Even if the position doesn’t require you to know a specific language, it can still come in handy at some point. At the end of the day, it’s always better to know more languages than less.

To list languages in your resume , just write them down and assign them the appropriate level:

  • Intermediate

You can also use the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) or the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) proficiency scales.

As a given, you should never lie about your language skills. You never know—your interviewer might turn out to be fluent in the language or even be a native speaker!

Hobbies and Interests

If you want to spice up your resume, hobbies and interests could be just what you need.

While this section isn’t a game-changer, it can help the hiring manager see who you are as an individual.

For example, if you listed “teamwork” as one of your skills, hobbies like team sports can back up your claim.

And who knows? Maybe you and your interviewer have some hobbies or interests in common!

Volunteering Experience

If you’re the type of person who devotes their free time to helping others while expecting nothing in return, chances are that you’re the type of employee who’s in it for more than just the money.

Seeing volunteer experience on your resume tells hiring managers that you’re a loyal employee who’s after something meaningful.

Several studies show that listing your volunteer experience can boost your chances of getting hired, especially if you have little to no work experience.

Certifications

Hiring managers love candidates who invest in themselves, and that’s exactly what they see when you list certifications on your resume .

If you value continuous learning and strive to expand your skill set, that’s always a plus.

Certifications can also show employers how much expertise you have.

For example, if you’re a Microsoft Cloud Engineer and you specialize in Microsoft Technologies, you should definitely include all essential certifications on your resume, such as the Azure Solutions Architect Expert one.

Awards and Recognitions

There’s no harm in showing off a little on your resume. After all, you want to be a candidate that shines above the rest.

So, if you’ve received any awards or recognitions that make you stand out in your field, make sure to add them.

For example, if you’ve been recognized for your contributions to data science or received a hard-to-come-by scholarship , mention it in your resume. Just keep your entries here relevant to the field you’re applying to.

Publications

Whether you’re a freelance writer or a distinguished academic, publications are always impressive.

If you have any published works (online or in an academic journal), you can add them to your resume. Just make sure to include a link so the hiring manager knows where to check your work!

Are you looking for a career in academia? Check out our guide to writing the perfect academic CV to get started!

Working on side projects can show off your passion for your field. Whether they’re university class projects or part-time entrepreneurial endeavors, they’re relevant.

For example, if you worked on a mock software product as part of a university competition, it shows you went through every step of product creation, from ideation to creating a marketing strategy.

This project also shows off your organizational skills , and if you mention it in your resume, you stand a better chance of landing the job you had your sights set on.

But projects can also be personal, not academic. For example, you might manage an Etsy store where you sell hand-made arts and crafts to customers online. This is a great opportunity to highlight your creativity, management, and customer service skills .

Overall, hiring managers love employees who do cool work in their free time, so projects are always a great section to add to your resume.

Extracurricular Activities

Every college freshman knows that extracurricular experience can make a difference in their application.

Especially if you don’t have a lot of experience outside of school, extracurricular activities are a great way to show potential employers your skills and give them insight into you as a person. Different clubs and after-school projects can help you gain real-life skills and considerably increase your chances of landing your first job after college.

For example, joining a student government organization can hone your leadership skills and teach you how to work as part of a team.

For example, if you’re part of a student government or public speaking club, these activities can help you hone your leadership and presentation skills.

11+ Expert Resume Tips

You’ve got the gist of how to make a resume. Now, it’s time to make it really stand out from the crowd!

Follow these exclusive resume tips to take your resume game to the next level:

  • Match the professional title underneath your name to the job title of the position you’re applying for. Hiring managers often hire for several roles at once, so giving them this cue about what role you’re after helps things go smoother.
  • Mention any promotions from your previous jobs. Use the work experience entries for them to focus on the achievements that helped you earn them.
  • Describe your achievements using Laszlo Bock’s formula : accomplished X as measured by Y by doing Z . This way, your work experience can go the extra mile and show the hiring manager what you can bring to the table.
  • Always list your achievements and responsibilities in concise bullet points. This makes your resume more reader-friendly, and it’s more likely that the hiring manager will see your impressive achievements at a glance.
  • Don’t use personal pronouns like “I” or “me,” and don’t refer to yourself by name. Stick to a slightly altered third person, like “managed data integrity at XYZ Inc.” instead of “he managed data integrity at XYZ Inc.”
  • Name your resume sections correctly, or it might get rejected by the ATS. Swapping out quirky names like “career history” or “expertise” for “work experience” and "skills" makes it easier for the hiring manager to find what they’re looking for, too.
  • Prioritize important keywords instead of adding all of them. Make sure the relevant skills, qualifications, and experiences you add all make sense in context, too. Your goal is to get past the ATS and impress the hiring manager.
  • Focus on transferable skills if you don’t have a lot of relevant work experience. Any extracurricular activities or personal projects can help you stand out here.
  • Add a strategic pop of color to headings, bullet points, or key elements you want to highlight. It can help your resume stand out, but don’t overdo it—you want the information to be more impressive than the color palette.
  • Don’t include the line “references available upon request.” Hiring managers already know they can request a list of references from you, so there’s no need to waste valuable space on it.
  • Make sure your resume is optimized for mobile viewing. Most hiring managers use their mobile phones as often as desktop computers, so save your resume to a PDF file and make sure your formatting stays intact across any device.
  • Rename the resume file you plan to send so it includes your name and the name of the position you’re applying for. It’s a small detail that can turn into a crucial mistake if you forget it.
  • Read your resume out loud when you’re done. This is a great way to catch awkward phrases or spelling mistakes you might have missed otherwise.
  • Use a tool like DocSend to track your resume. You’ll get a notification any time someone opens your resume, and you can see how long they spend reading it.

Next Steps After Your Resume

Now that we’ve covered everything you need to know about how to make a resume, it’s time to talk about the rest of your job application.

After all, your resume is only the first step in your job search. To land the job you deserve, you also need to write a captivating cover letter and ace that upcoming interview. Here’s how:

#1. How to Write a Convincing Cover Letter

The companion piece to every resume is the cover letter.

Most job-seekers flinch when they hear that they have to write a cover letter. What do you even mention in a cover letter, anyway? If you were good at writing cover letters, you’d be applying for a job as a writer !

In reality, though, writing a cover letter is very simple once you know its purpose.

Think of your cover letter as a direct message to the hiring manager. It’s your chance to briefly explain why you’re such an awesome fit for the position. And with a few cover letter tips to point you in the right direction, you’ll write the perfect cover letter for your job application.

Just follow this structure:

cover letter structure for resume

  • Add the contact details. Include the same contact information as on your resume, plus additional contact details for the hiring manager, including their name, job title, the company’s name, and location.
  • Introduce yourself. Start your cover letter by mentioning who you are, what your work experience is, and why you’re interested in the position. Mention a standout achievement or two, relevant skills, and what you’d like to do for the company you’re applying for.
  • Explain why you’d excel at the job. Find the requirements in the job ad that you meet, and elaborate on how you fulfill the most important ones. Research the company so you know what you like about it, and mention it in your cover letter. Make sure to convey your enthusiasm for the job and confidence that you’ll be a great fit for their team.
  • Wrap it up politely. Conclude your cover letter by recapping your key selling points and thanking the hiring manager for their time. Then add a call to action, such as “Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at the provided phone number so that we can discuss my application in greater detail.” Then, add a closing line and follow it with your full name.

Sounds easy, right? Here’s a real-life example to drive the point home:

FAQs on How to Make a Resume

Do you still have some questions about making a resume? Check out the answers to the most frequently asked questions below!

#1. What does a good resume look like in 2024?

For your resume to look good in 2024, make sure it’s organized and clean and isn’t longer than one page.

Be sure to include information that adds value to your application—leave out the focus on your relevant work experience and skills that you can back up, and list as many achievements as possible.

If you’re using a resume template, choose one based on your industry. Conservative industries like law, banking, and business require more traditional resume templates. But if you’re going for an industry like design, architecture, or marketing, you can go for a creative resume template .

Remote work is also big in 2024, so if that’s what you’re after, tailor your resume to match the job you want.

#2. How do you make a resume in Word?

The best way to create a resume in Word is to use a pre-designed Microsoft Word template. To access them, you should:

  • Open MS Word
  • Click “file” from the menu bar
  • Select “new”
  • Type “resume templates” in the search bar

That said, Word resume templates are generic, hard to personalize, and overall not very stylish.

Want a resume that looks good and is extremely easy to make? Check out resume templates to get started!

#3. How do I write a resume for my first job?

If you’re writing your first-ever resume for an entry-level position, the hiring manager won’t expect you to have any work experience.

However, you can make up for your lack of experience with your skills and academic achievements.

For example, you can take advantage of extracurricular activities, internships, volunteering experiences, and other non-professional experiences. You can use them to highlight the skills you’ve gained and what you’ve achieved so far.

So, your first job resume should have a resume objective, emphasize your education, and replace your work experience with any internships, volunteering, independent projects, or other experiences.

#4. How to make a resume on Google Docs?

You can make a resume on Google Docs by choosing one of their templates and filling it in on the go.

All you have to do is go to your Google Drive’s template gallery, choose your preferred template, fill in your information, and your Google Docs resume is ready to go!

That said, Google Docs templates aren’t the most user-friendly choice. You don’t have much flexibility with the layout and formatting isn’t that easy. For example, you tweak a section to the slightest, and the whole resume becomes a mess.

If you want an easier option, check out our resume builder !

#5. What kind of resume do employers prefer?

Typically, employers prefer one-page-long resumes that follow the reverse chronological format.

Hiring managers receive hundreds of resumes every day, so they don't have the time to read three-page resumes. Try one of our one-page resume templates so you don’t go over the recommended resume length.

Meanwhile, the reverse-chronological format is the most popular because it draws attention to your most recent jobs and professional achievements, which is the #1 most important thing hiring managers look at when evaluating a resume.

#6. How many jobs should you put on your resume?

You should only include relevant job positions on your resume.

This means that your work experience section should be tailored to the job you are applying for. If you’ve worked five different jobs and they can all add value to your current application, then you should include all five.

If, on the other hand, you’re applying for, say, a customer service position and some of your past jobs don’t have anything to do with customer service, you should skip them.

#7. Should I put my address on my resume?

You can put your location (city, state, or country) on your resume, but you don’t need to put your entire physical address.

Putting a physical address on a resume was the norm back when companies would contact you via mail. In today’s world, everyone communicates via email, which is why adding a correct and professional email address to your contact information section is far more important than putting your physical address.

So, just include your location or-–if you’re a remote worker—specify you prefer to work remotely by writing “working remotely from [location].”

#8. What information should I leave out of my resume?

As a general rule, you shouldn’t include your birthday or your headshot on your resume. This norm varies from country to country but it applies to the USA, Canada, and UK.

If you have plenty of achievements to list under your work experience, then you can leave your basic work responsibilities out of your resume.

In your education section, you should only include your highest and most recent degree. So, if you hold a Ph.D., you can list that and your Master’s degree and leave your Bachelor’s degree and high school diploma out.

Finally, leave out any skills that aren’t relevant to the job you’re applying for.

#9. Is a resume a CV?

Depending on where you are, a CV (Curriculum Vitae) and a resume might be completely different things.

In most of the world, though, including Europe and Asia, they are used interchangeably for the same document. Both CVs and resumes are one to two pages long, and list skills and experiences relevant to the position you’re applying for.

Sometimes more detailed resumes that go over one page are referred to as CVs. These are typically only used by senior professionals, executives, CEOs, etc.

In the USA, however, a CV is a completely different document. Typically, CVs are detailed and comprehensive documents that highlight your entire academic and professional history. They’re often used for academic, scientific, or research positions, which is why this type of CV can also be referred to as an academic CV.

You can create your CV using one of our CV templates !

#10. Should I write my own resume?

Yes, you should always write your own resume.

Your resume is your opportunity to show the hiring manager your communication, writing, and presentation skills . Employers also evaluate you based on how effectively you can convey information about yourself, and there’s no one that can represent you better than yourself.

Writing your own resume lets you introduce yourself authentically. You have the best understanding of your skills and experiences, and you can personalize them to make your resume stand out.

And, as a bonus, the experience of writing your resume yourself can be reflective and insightful, so it might help you understand your professional journey and career goals better.

#11. Can a resume be two pages?

Generally, we strongly recommend that your resume stick to one page.

Hiring managers go through hundreds of resumes every day, and keeping your resume to one page increases the odds that they’ll see your qualifications faster.

In some cases, like when you have a lot of relevant experience, your resume can go over two pages. But this exception is reserved for senior professionals with over a decade of relevant experience and tons of skills and achievements that simply can’t fit on one page.

#12. Is a simple resume okay?

Absolutely, a simple resume is often more than okay—it's preferable.

Before your resume even gets to the hiring manager, a complicated layout could get it rejected by the applicant tracking system (ATS). A simple resume template can help get your application straight to the hiring manager.

A clean layout can also make sure that your resume is easily readable and looks professional. This can focus the hiring manager's attention on your work experience and skills without excessive clutter or flashy colors to distract them.

Key Takeaways

And that’s a wrap!

If you’ve followed all of our advice until now, congrats! You’re probably an expert on how to make a resume.

To recap, let’s go through some of the most important lessons we’ve learned so far...

  • Use the right resume builder to make the process as smooth as possible. You don’t want to mess around with formatting for hours before even starting to work on your resume!
  • Focus on your achievements over responsibilities. This can help you stand out from all the other applicants, especially if you back your claims up with data.
  • Include all the must-have sections, like the resume summary, work experience, education, and skills. Then leverage optional sections if you have leftover space.
  • Tailor your resume for the job you’re applying for. Everything listed on your resume should be relevant to the specific job you’re applying for, and you should write a new resume for every new job application.
  • Take the time to perfect your cover letter. It’s just as important as your resume, so make sure you pay as much attention to it!

Growth Hack Your Career

10 Best Resume Writers of 2023 that Will Get You Hired (and their prices)

How much does a resume writer cost? And i s it worth hiring a professional resume writer? The answers vary based on where you are in your career and your job search, but in this post I'll share when it's a good idea to hire a professional resume writer.

I'll also share some great resume writers to choose from (and their prices) plus a few more budget-friendly options as well.

Beyond the Statistics of Resume Writers

According to a study by TopResume, job candidates who used a professional resume writer had a 32% higher rate of finding a job than those who wrote their resume themselves. And, 42% of them even moved on to higher-level positions.

Those statistics speak for themselves.

But in my opinion, the biggest benefit of hiring a resume writer actually has nothing to do with your resume. Yes, a professional resume writer will optimize your resume for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), help you find the right keywords, and help you write outstanding bullet points .

But, I think the biggest benefit to hiring a resume writer is having someone in your corner who can give you solid advice and help you navigate the job application process.

Job hunting is a depressing affair no matter how you do it. It will make you feel under valued, under appreciated, and worst of all, purposeless.

Having someone in your corner who knows what they're talking about and who has helped other job seekers is HUGE from a morale perspective.

Best Resume Writing Services vs Professional Resume Writers

When you first search for a resume writer, you'll get a lot of mixed results. There are three routes you can go when it comes to getting help with your resume.

Your three options, in order of most affordable to most expensive are:

  • You can use a resume builder
  • You can hire a resume writing service
  • You can hire a professional resume writer

Using a resume builder is one of the least expensive routes to go and modern resume builders can use AI to help you write your resume fairly quickly.

For a bit more hands-on help, you may also want to look at a resume writing service. Resume writing services have several resume writers on staff so it can give you more options and be less expensive than a dedicated professional resume writer.

The best resume writing services can be hard to find and the quality can vary a lot. If you'd like to go with a resume writing service, I recommend the resume writing service Let's Eat Grandma , which was ranked the "Best Resume Writing Service of 2022."

Your third option is to hire a professional resume writer who will work directly with you until you're hired. If that sounds appealing, here is our list of the top resume writers for this year.

The Resume Writer List

If you’re having a hard time getting responses to your job applications, I highly recommend you look into a few of the top resume writers on this list.

We compiled this list based on a lot of qualifications. Experience and certifications were certainly included, but we also tried to find a diversity of different styles,   methods, specialties and prices  that the resume writers offered. Regardless of your position, field, or level of experience, there should be someone that suits your needs on this list.

On this list you'll find:

  • Ex-recruiters
  • Award-winning writers
  • Published Authors
  • And an Ex-Snowboard Company Owner

Some of the resume writers offer free consultations while others offer low-cost coaching calls that can give you an idea of what to expect from them.

If you’re still thinking, “resume writing? How hard could it be?” Believe me, writing a good resume can be much harder than most people think.

When I was applying to jobs, I wasted over 14 months banging my head against the keyboard because I didn’t know that these amazing people existed or how valuable they are.

I eventually figured things out and  even created a  free resume writing course , but I highly recommend you save  yourself the agony of job seeking and take a look at these top resume writers of 2023 below.

If you find that these resume writers are out of your budget, you could also look into using a resume builder. Here's a link to the 4 best resume builders I recommend .

10 Best Resume Writers in 2024

10 best resume writers

To land the job you’ve always wanted, you need to write a strong and compelling resume that represents you well. This is all the more urgent as we gear our job search game this 2024, amid the worldwide pandemic still ongoing.

As per The Ladders, recruiters scan resumes for an average of six seconds only, before deciding whether a job applicant is fit for the role. This is called the 6-second test. To pass the test, your resume must have key details that will catch hiring managers’ attention, letting them know your resume is worthy of their time.

However, given the tough competition in the job market today, some have resorted to hiring the best resume writers to gain an edge from their fellow job seekers.

Don’t know how to start? That’s where we come in. To help you skip the dreadful search for the best resume writing services today, we reviewed a lot of resume writing companies and ranked the best. Let this list serve as your go-to guide in choosing the most reliable resume writing company to help you with your job search needs.

Moving ahead, below are the in-depth reviews of the best resume writers, along with the key details you must not miss. We’ve also listed each of the company’s perks and fails to help you check and choose which one suits your needs and goals the most.

1. Resume Professional Writers

RPW listed as one of the best best resume writers

Aside from their ability to render exceptional resume writing services, they are also known for their reliable customer service—for 21 years and counting!

Also, they vow to deliver a faster service. With their shortened turnaround time from 2 to 3 business days down to 1 day, they strictly commit to providing a much faster transaction.

Due to most companies using applicant tracking system (ATS) nowadays, the demand for keyword-optimized resumes has also increased. To ensure their clients’ resumes are highly marketable, their writers produce ATS-friendly resumes, making sure to specifically tailor each document to the target field.

Additionally, they offer free resume review to help applicants gear their resumes toward their target job.

Perks: This firm is the only one that offers topnotch resume writing services with a much faster lead time. This, in turn, proves that they deserve to rank first in this list. Despite numerous attempts of their competitors to ruin their image, the company remains steadfast with continuously improved customer service and by ensuring the quality of their outputs.

Fails: Sure, they can deliver your resume in the speed of lightning. This allows you to use the rest of your time for other things. However, this lead time excludes weekends and holidays.

Delivery Time: Most firms have a turnaround time of at least a week for the initial draft. However, they vow to deliver your resume within 1 to 2 business days, which is faster than most resume writing services in the US.

Price Range: Who knew you can get fast, reliable resume writing services for as low as $125? This company is one of the very few that offer fast and cheap resume writing services without compromising the quality.

Best Resume Writing Apps 2022

There’s one app that sits at the top of our listings of the best resume writing apps, and that’s LiveCareer. As a web app, there are few compatibility concerns, and it’s full of useful features. There’s more to it than resume creation too - the app is well connected, and is capable of publishing your resume directly to job sites and social media. It’s hard to beat.

The web app is a huge trend in software at the moment, and resume writers have capitalised on it. Every single one of the best resume writing software packages we tested was a web app, with downloadable applications now looking rather out of date in comparison. It helps that resume writing software has a defined end, and therefore can limit the amount of tools and options it throws at the user rather than a general-purpose app such as a word processor or desktop publishing program. In this way, having the application run entirely in the browser makes a lot of sense, as it speeds up the process, and means you’ll be downloading completed files and applying for employment in no time.

If you need more advice we have guides to the best online grammar checkers , and the best typing software to help you get faster.

1. LiveCareer: Best resume writing app overall

LiveCareer

LiveCareer: My Perfect Resume

Our expert review:

Reasons to buy

Reasons to avoid.

More than just a resume-building site, LiveCareer is a fully featured web app that combines templates, connectivity with other sites, and cover letter creation to form one of the very best pieces of resume software available today.

The whole process of creating your resume is automated using a wizard and a limited number of templates. Answer its questions, inputting information where necessary, and you’ll receive tips as you work, pointing the way to a better resume.

If you’ve already got a resume, you can import it into LiveCareer and use the information already on it to speed along the creation of a new one. This is an uncommon feature among resume creation services, and certainly makes building a new, better, resume much faster. Also helping to speed things up are the helpful pre-written phrases the app can suggest if you’re stumped by how to describe some aspect of your career.

The interface is clean, and intuitive to use, and while we’ve seen larger numbers of templates elsewhere, the whole thing comes together to make LiveCareer the best we’ve found for making a striking resume.

2. Resume Genius: Best value resume app

ResumeGenius

Resume Genius

If you subscribe, you can download your resume in more useful formats, such as a Word document or PDF, or send it by fax from the site. You can also store unlimited resumes on the site, so you can tailor them for specific jobs, and you can get help to create a cover letter to accompany your resume. There’s even job search functionality, and a resume critique from an experienced career consultant.

A web app with a minimalist aesthetic, you pick a template, answer questions on your education and experience, and it generates your resume. It’s a very quick process, although it’s wise to get your thoughts in order before you begin, lining up in your mind the answers to questions about exactly when you left your last few jobs, and exactly what kind of college degree you have.

The finished result can be downloaded as a text file, but you’ll need to register with the site to do so. If you choose to register, and pay the subscription, however, a few more options open up, though you’ll need to pay for them. The $2.95 14-day trial is the best value of many we’ve seen, but it’s very difficult to get off the payment plan page and on to the dashboard page where the resume you’ve created is stored.

3. CakeResume: Best for social connectivity

CakeResume

A web app with a free version and an intuitive drag and drop interface, CakeResume makes the creation of your resume a straightforward process, and even hosts its own LinkedIn-like network for employers seeking new talent.

It’s a good-looking app that’s easy to navigate, and can link to your social media. If you already have a resume, you can upload it to the site and it will use it to populate the fields of your profile. When the profile is completed to the site’s liking, you can turn this into a new resume, editing the information as you go. Of course, you can always create a brand new resume from scratch, and there is a good selection of templates to choose from to get you started.

There’s a choice of two web apps to use, and we’d recommend the newer one, even though it’s still in beta. It removes a lot of the limitations placed by the original editing app. There’s no help with cover letters though, and it lacks the pre-written phrases that are a highlight of other services. There’s support in the form of a blog, however.

A further useful feature is the creation of a link, which you can use to give people access to your online resume - it’s really handy for pasting into an email, but recruiters may still prefer an attachment.

4. Visual CV: Best for templates

Visual CV

Another web app, but one that does things in a slightly different way. It has some bold, unusual template choices too, making it a good option for someone who wants to stand out from the crowd.

Visual CV sets your resume up as a kind of web page, with a unique link you can share with potential employers. You’ll need to subscribe to unlock this ability, but if you’re applying for jobs with the kind of employer who prefers to look at a screen rather then drown in paper, it might be worth it.

You can download your resume as a PDF too, and as long as you use one of the (rather dull, but still professional-looking) free templates, you’ll not be charged for doing so. If you want a little more flair, however, it’s well worth registering for the Pro service, as this also unlocks the ability to download your resume as a Word document, so you can continue editing it on your computer.

There are twice as many templates as LiveCareer’s offering, but it loses ground in terms of the options and control over layout that it offers. Overall, though, this is a strong entrant in the resume app market.

5. Pongo: Best for online help

Pongo

Not one of the most fully featured resume builders we’ve seen, but one that we can still recommend thanks to the amount of support it offers while you compose your resume.

There’s a lot happening on the Pongo website, and it can be easy to feel lost, but in among all the videos offering advice on everything from cover letters to interview techniques, and success stories from those who got hired using the site, there’s a resume builder you can use for free. Subscribe, however, and the options keep growing. There are templates (although not as many as we’d like to see), sample phrases, matching cover letters and more, though there aren’t as many ways to customize your resume away from the template as we’ve seen elsewhere.

Download options include text, Word and PDF, while the ability to turn your resume into a website is a nice addition. For anyone new to the jobs market, or perhaps returning after a long time away, this is an excellent choice to create your resume.

How much do resume writing apps cost?

Resume writing programs have largely segued into web apps rather than downloadable ones, with subscription charges that range anywhere from a $3 one-off charge for a few days’ access up to about $20 a month. Pay attention when you subscribe, though, because most services offer several different plans – and some plans limit the features or number of resumes you can create. Make sure to find a selection that works for your job search. Also, several of the programs we tested come with a free trial, but frequently the company won’t remove their watermark from free templates. It’s best to pay a little extra and remove the companies’ branding. Being able to download your resume as a Word document is also important, as unlike a PDF you can continue to edit this in Word or one of its compatible free competitors as your skills and experience grow.

How we tested resume apps

We read dozens of articles and researched the current industry standard in resume writing software before we selected which programs to test. Then we downloaded or subscribed to the ones we selected. Most of the current software is web-based, but there are few downloadable programs that have enough features and support to be worth mentioning.

In each program we created a resume and then tested the available features. We evaluated how intuitive the input options and wizard (the tool that you use to input your data) were in each program. We also looked for programs that offer additional support beyond simple resume creation. Resume software that connect with popular job search engines or give tips about acing your interview ranked higher in our comparison.

We looked for import and export options that allow you to easily transfer your completed work to new systems and give you flexibility to use the information from older resumes to create new ones. We also graded the software on customization tools, like margin spacing and font choices, as well as text size and watermarks to make sure you can create a resume that’ll stand out.  We learned there’s often a balance between having plenty of options and having so many that they become overwhelming, so we looked for a number of templates and features that was just right.

Are resume apps actually worth it?

In a word, yes. Based on our experience with the sites and services we tested, it's helpful to have the task of creating a resume broken up into more manageable chunks. Many of the programs that we used have wizards that provide helpful tips or guidance on each section. It's also convenient to be able to save personal information, like your address and home phone number, to be used over and over again as you customize resumes for different job applications. Overall, because resume writing is such a common experience, we think its hard to go wrong with these programs. They are also inexpensive enough that it’s worth a try.

Resume and job hunting trends for 2021

Economists are predicting an uneven recovery from the spike in unemployment caused by the pandemic, and the US rate might stay above 6% until the end of the year.

Keep It Short, but Not Too Short: A recent study by ResumeGo shows that recruiters are twice as likely to prefer a two-page resume than a single-page resume. The common wisdom used to be that anything beyond a single page is a strike against you, but if you have the work experience and qualifications, don’t skimp on including them. Be as thorough as possible.

Start Strong: The top third of your resume is the most important real estate. Use it to make an impression and to give the hiring manager the most important information. Include contact information, your LinkedIn account info, your most recent job and a summary statement. The summary isn’t an objective – instead, it should be a statement that catches the recruiter’s eyes. In the summary, talk about your successes and what you can add to the company you’re applying at.

Optimize Your Resume: Many companies use applicant tracking systems to monitor and update you on your application’s progress. Some of these systems can be overzealous about filtering resumes, so you may need to include some keywords used in the job posting. In some cases, you can benefit from using the particular jargon preferred by the company you’re applying at.

Customize & Cut: Make sure each resume is tailored to the specific job you’re applying for. One-size-fits-all resumes don’t really work any more. Trim your resume to the last 10 to 15 years of your job history – anything further back could date you or may be irrelevant. If you’re applying for a job as a software developer, the company hiring you isn’t interested in your high school dishwashing job.

How to write the “About Me” section in a Resume? (11+ examples)

Published on September 2nd, 2024

blog-banner

While building your resume, the "About Me" section in a resume is that golden opportunity to showcase who you uniquely and professionally are. It is in this section that you get to tell them who you are beyond titles and skills. But how do you know this section hits the mark? Let's dive into some tips and examples to help you write an "About Me" section worth reading.

Why is the “About Me” Section Important?

Your "About Me" section is the elevator pitch of your resume. This is the summary of your professional journey, your skills, and the value you can bring to the table. If it's done correctly, it will grasp the recruiter's attention and set the tone for the remainder of your resume.

Tips for Writing an Engaging “About Me” Section

  • Keep it short: Your "About Me" section is supposed to summarize, not be a biography. Try to keep it within 3-4 sentences that highlight your career and what sets you apart.
  • Be real: This is your opportunity to shine as you. Stay away from jargon and clichés and get to the root of what makes you different from every other candidate out there.
  • Personalize it for the Job:  Tailor-make your "About Me" section for each application. Highlight those skills and experiences that best fit the job you are applying for.
  • Achievements: Just listing your responsibilities isn't saying enough; show how well you can do it. Mention significant achievements or milestones that prove the impact.
  • Industry Keywords:  Sprinkle relevant industry keywords naturally in your "About Me" section. It will not only help with the ATS but also do wonders for the human reader.
  • Enthusiasm: Convey that you are very excited to be hired because you love the work involved in the field.

What to Put in the “About Me” Section of a Resume?

Knowing what to put in the “About Me” section of a resume can be challenging, but it's important to strike the right balance between professionalism and personality. Here are some key elements you should consider including:

Professional Summary: In the resume summary, write a small introduction about yourself regarding your designation, experience, and key skills. This gives the reader a snapshot of your professional background quickly.

Core Skills:  List some of the most important skills that you master for the job you are applying for. These would range from technical expertise to soft skills such as leadership or effective communication.

Career Achievements:  Highlight some of the greatest accomplishments or milestones of your career. This will go a long way to show the impacts you have brought to previous roles and can further enhance your profile.

Personal Traits:  While it’s important to focus on professional attributes, including a few personal traits can help humanize your resume. For example, you might mention your enthusiasm for problem-solving, creativity, or passion for continuous learning.

Career Goals:  If space permits, briefly mention your career goals or what you’re looking for in your next role. This can show potential employers that you’re thoughtful about your career trajectory and how their role fits into your plans.

How to List Fraternity or Sorority Experience on Your Resume

You gained a lot of great skills from Greek life, and you want to reap all of the benefits. Listing your fraternity or sorority in resumes tells an employer a lot – it showcases leadership, teamwork, community involvement, and work ethic. In this guide, learn why providing fraternity and sorority experience is important for jobseekers and how to list it properly.

Why include sorority experience on your resume?

Does Phi Theta Kappa look good on a resume? Of course – you learn a lot in Greek organizations, and that hard work communicates a lot to potential employers.

Listing your sorority or fraternity on resumes displays many vital workplace qualities, including collaboration, event planning, organization, and time management. It also shows a dedication to continuous learning and extra activities outside your regular education.

Discussing your Greek Life also helps you stand out from the crowd and may catch the hiring manager’s eye – especially if they were in a sorority or fraternity during their college days.

This strategy is especially important for recent graduates who have little to no work experience. Recruiters seek a related work history more than any other qualification, and if you’re straight out of school, it’s likely you’ve never worked or only have a few internships under your belt. Providing your sorority or fraternity gives you more ways to describe your qualifications and back up your skills without the need for work experience.

Expert tip:

Don’t expect the hiring manager or recruiter to connect your experience to their open role. Make it obvious to employers how your Greek Life applies to the job by using related terminology and discussing skills listed in their job description.

How to put Greek Life on resumes: 4 steps

Let’s take a look at how to put a sorority on a resume (or a fraternity!). Follow our four steps, but remember to flex them to your situation and needs.

Create a list of achievements

Start by building a list of the most important things you did at your sorority or fraternity. Many organizations have a strict list of requirements, so this is a good place to start. Did you have to maintain a high GPA, attend mandatory meetings, or commit a certain amount of your week to community service? These are excellent experiences to jot down.

Identify skills and competencies

Create a list of any and all skills you honed during Greek Life. Review your achievements to discover specific competencies each one requires. For example, weekly meetings use public speaking, collaboration, teamwork, and critical thinking.

Decide where to list your experience

Determine your placement. Typically, sororities and fraternities go in the Education section, but they fit equally well in Volunteer Work or Projects . These sections are optional and won’t be on every application, but you can include them easily if you use the right resume template .

Write out relevant examples

Now, list out your experience in a tidy bullet list, using action verbs and quantifiable achievements to make them more impactful. This is a great way to show the hiring manager your relevance to the role – using metrics and action verbs draws a direct correlation to work experience.

“Listing your sorority or fraternity on resumes displays many vital workplace qualities, including collaboration, event planning, organization, and time management.”

Examples of listing sorority experience

Now let’s take a look at some realistic examples for including fraternity and sorority experience on a resume. These entries are not only excellent inspiration, but they also serve as a quick template – just copy and paste these into a resume maker and change the details to suit your history.

Our first example is how to put Phi Theta Kappa on resumes:

Bachelor of Communications, Public Relations 2016 – 2020 GPA 3.8 Member of Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society

  • Raised $5,000 dollars in a school fundraising event, discussing issues with peers and giving public speeches.

And here’s a sample of how to put Phi Beta Kappa on resumes:

Bachelor of Technology, Computer Science September 2019 – May 2023 GPA: 4.0 Phi Beta Kappa

  • Collaborated and debated with sorority members daily, leading to insightful conversations about liberal arts and sciences.

There are a variety of ways, so pick what suits you best. Just ensure it’s professional, tidy, and conveys your experience in a clear way, so try to avoid technical jargon.

Key skills to highlight from sorority experience

Need some inspiration on the specific skills you earned during Greek Life? No worries, we have you covered.

Here are the top competencies you build in sororities and fraternities:

  • Leadership : Many professionals earn leadership skills from directing committees and organizing events. Greek leaders may even help recruit new members and welcome them to the group, which looks great on HR resumes.
  • Teamwork : Sororities and fraternities center on collaboration and group projects. Many members also learn conflict resolution and openness to other perspectives.
  • Communication: Public speaking and fundraising are common during these experiences and give you strong communication skills . Speeches also often involve personal stories and anecdotes, building up your charisma.
  • Time Management: Fraternity and sorority life is hectic, and balancing your Greek duties with academic responsibilities requires keen time management and organization.
  • Event Planning: Organizing and scheduling charitable events closely mimics professional project management, requiring you to maintain budgets, manage attendees, and keep track of a complex calendar.
  • Relationship management: The relationships you build and maintain within your Greek organization gave you excellent interpersonal skills, including empathy, patience, and rapport-building.
  • Mentorship: Did you help initiate new members? Coaching is an essential skill that helps you discover people’s strengths and weaknesses and provide expert guidance.

Best practices and mistakes to avoid

Let’s check out the top do’s and don’ts so you can list your sorority like a pro. Keep these tips in your back pocket and build a powerful, standout resume:

  • Don’t be vague : Listing your sorority responsibilities like a to-do list won’t give the recruiter enough information. Be specific and ensure you tie your experience to the open role.
  • Quantify achievements : Measurable metrics and statistics give the hiring manager tangible numbers to work with. Don’t just say you raised money for a children’s hospital; say you raised $10,000 to show your impact.
  • Don’t add unnecessary details : Only mention what’s strictly essential. Adding irrelevant details will distract the recruiter, and they might pass over important information.
  • Don’t sell yourself short : You accomplished great things during Greek Life, practicing leadership, teamwork, and philanthropy. Don’t be shy and proudly discuss your achievements.

Check out our realistic resume examples to see these best practices in action so you can put them to use.

Debunking misconceptions

Have you heard that sororities and fraternities don’t belong on resumes? It simply isn’t true.

Greek organizations provide people with vital professional skills like any other project or activity, such as internships and personal projects. Working with teams, planning events, and raising money for charity gives you vital skills and competencies.

We encourage you to add these activities to your resume alongside any other life accomplishment or honor. These experiences made you who you are today and gave you amazing, valuable skills.

Showcase your sorority or fraternity with pride

Showing your public speaking, planning, and conflict resolution is an excellent way to make your resume stand out to employers. Display your Greek organization on job applications using our tips:

  • Use quantified achievements to show the impact of your work
  • Don’t sell yourself short, and be proud of your skills
  • Dig into your experience and discover all the competencies you learned
  • Read the job description to ensure you make your achievements as relevant as possible
