1.  Some businesses now say that no one can smoke cigarettes in any of their offices. Some governments have banned smoking in all public places. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons.

Sample Answer

Most of the firms, organization and companies as well as Government make restrictions  to smoke in work places and public amenities respectively. It has become fashionable in  the world today to blame smoking. However, although I feel that smoking can be  harmful, but I don’t think it should be forbidden completely. I would also argue that  people should have the right whether they smoke or not.

Let me deal with the three positive sides of smoking. Firstly, smoking certainly helps  many people to relax. For some, it even improves concentration. If someone is upset  owing to debt or they have exam, like to smoke to reduce the pressure or tension. Most  of the people like to smoke when they are relaxing with friends. Secondly, governments  throughout the world make huge profits from taxes on cigarettes. The income obtained  from taxes provide funds which are used for building school, hospital and public places  such as parks, gardens, sports ground and foot paths. Thirdly, tobacco industry also  employs tens of thousands of people all over the world, particularly in poorer countries  like Zimbabwe or India. Without cigarettes, these people would have no jobs.

Despite these positive effects there are lots of negative effects of smoking too. Initially,  smoking has been proven to be too dangerous for health. As one cigarette contain more  then 4000 chemical substances, therefore, it causes for many injurious diseases like  heart attacks, asthma, bronchitis, lung cancer and cough. According to the current  report, in Britain about 3,500 people are killed each year in road accidents and 120,000  are killed by smoking. Furthermore, smoking costs government millions of dollars  because of the large number of people who need treatment in hospitals for smoking-related problems. Moreover, there is also concern today about passive smoking. Recent  research shows that non-smokers can suffer health problems if they spend long period  of time among people who do smoke. In UK children whose parents are smoke are  three times as likely to start smoking themselves.

In short, I think the world would be a better place without cigarettes. However, the  decision as to whether – smoke or not should be for each individual to make. I suggest  people should not smoke in a room or place where there are non smokers but surely  they should be free to smoke elsewhere.

Some sociologists claim that parents and other members of society often set a bad example. Discuss the causes and some effects of widespread drug use by young people in modern day society. Make any recommendations you feel are necessary to help fight youth drug abuse. 

Youth drug abuse is a serious problem nowadays in many cultures. Not only is illegal  drug use on the rise, but children as young as 10 years old are experimenting with  alcohol and tobacco. The reasons for this behaviour are unclear, but certain sociologists  blame the examples set by their elders.

Parents who drink and smoke to excess are, in effect, telling their children that it is  acceptable to abuse their bodies with drugs. Consequently, children may have a similar  view towards illegal drugs, even if their parents are against their use. In addition, drug  use shown on television and in films can only confuse children who are also taught at  school that drug abuse is wrong.

The pressure on young people to perform well at school in order to compete for jobs is a  possible cause of the problem. Many believe they cannot live up to their parents’ expectations, and feel a sense of hopelessness. Also, the widespread availability of  drugs means teenagers are faced with the temptation to experiment. Drugs are used as  a means of expressing dissatisfaction with the pressures they face in society.

The effects of drug abuse are well known. Many young people’s talents are wasted, and  addiction to hard drugs can cost a user his or her life. Furthermore, those who drink and  drive may be involved in fatal road accidents. The cost to society is great, and  enormous amounts of money are spent on convicting drug dealers and on education programmes.

To conclude, I recommend that the only sensible way to solve this problem is to educate  young people about the dangers of drug use, and to take steps to reduce the pressure  of competition placed upon them.

3.  Drug abuse is becoming a problem in our society. What are the causes of this and what are some solutions?

Drug abuse is rife in many countries. Billions of dollars are spent internationally  preventing drug use, treating addicts, and fighting drug-related crime. Although drugs  threaten many societies, their effects can also be combated successfully. This essay  looks at some of the effects of drug use on society, and suggests some solutions to the  problem.

Drug abuse causes multiple problems for countries and communities. The medical and  psychological effects are very obvious. Addicts cannot function as normal members of  society. They neglect or abuse their families, and eventually require expensive  treatment or hospitalization. The second effect is on crime. Huge police resources are  needed to fight smuggling and dealing. Criminal gangs and mafia underworlds develop  with the money from drugs.

However, the menace of drugs can be fought. Education is the first battle. Children  need to be told at home and in school about drugs. People need to be aware of the  effects so that they can make avoid this problem. A second approach is to increase  police manpower and powers to stop dealers and to enforce the law. However the main  target should be the user. Families and counselors need to talk to children and people  at risk. Parents need to look at their children and help them to Jobs are needed to give  people a role in society.

In conclusion, although the problem of drugs may seem impossible to eliminate, there  are concrete steps that can be taken to weaken the hold of drugs on society. The  danger from drugs is too great to ignore.

4.  Should Smoking be Banned?  

It has become fashionable in the world today to condemn smoking. However, although I  feel that smoking can be harmful, I do not think it should be banned completely.

Let me deal first with the positive side of smoking. First, smoking undoubtedly helps  many people to relax. For some, it even improves concentration. Many people like to  smoke before exams or when they are relaxing with friends.

A further point is that governments throughout the world make huge profits from levying  taxes on cigarettes. This provides funds which are used for building schools, hospitals  and other public amenities.

The tobacco industry also employs tens of thousands of people throughout the world,  particularly in poorer countries like Zimbabwe or India. Without cigarettes, these people  would have no jobs.

I would also argue that people should have the right to choose whether they smoke or  not. People should not smoke in a room where there are non-smokers but surely they  should be free to smoke elsewhere.

The arguments against smoking are well known. Smoking has been shown to be  dangerous to health. Heart disease, bronchitis and lung cancer have all been linked.

A further issue is that smoking costs governments millions of pounds because of the  large number of people who need treatment in hospitals for smoking related problems.

There is also concern today about passive smoking. Recent research has shown that  non-smokers can suffer health problems if they spend long periods of time among  people who do smoke.

In general, I think the world would be a better place without cigarettes. However, the  decision as to whether to smoke or not should be for each individual to make.

People in all modern societies use drugs, but today’s youth are experimenting with both legal and illegal drugs, and at an increasingly early age. Some sociologists claim that parents and other members of society often set a bad example. Discuss the causes and some effects of widespread drug use by young people in modern day society. Make any recommendations you feel are necessary to help fight youth drug abuse.

Band 9 essay sample

Drug addiction is an alarming threat to all societies. Unlike in the past, now even teenagers are becoming addicted to drugs. According to some social scientists, substance abuse is a result of peer pressure and parental negligence. When parents fail to become a role model for their children or when they fail to give adequate attention to their children, the latter are more likely to get into bad company and develop harmful habits like drug abuse.

It is an undeniable fact that the conduct and character of parents has a direct impact on their children. If parents do drugs, their children will invariably adopt that habit from an early childhood. Parental negligence is another factor that encourages adolescents to experiment with drugs. If they do not get enough love or attention at home, they will try to find it elsewhere. Neglected children often make friends with the wrong people and develop various bad habits. Substance abuse is just one of them. Peer pressure is another factor that encourages young people to consume drugs. Humans by nature are influenced by the character of their friends. So children who are in bad company are likely to adopt the same bad habits.

Substance abuse has disastrous consequences for young people. They become irritable, confused and violent. They cannot focus on their studies. Since withdrawal symptoms are too hard to endure, teenagers who have once experimented with drugs cannot break that habit even if they are aware of the harmful consequences. It is a vicious cycle. Once they get in, there is no way they can get out.

In order to curb this menace, the government should come up with stringent laws. Anyone selling drugs to teenagers should be confined to prison for a long time. In addition, the government should launch awareness campaigns to make children realize the consequence of doing drugs. Both parents and teachers should monitor children for any change in their conduct. If they suspect that something is wrong, they should investigate it further.

To conclude, drug addiction has several harmful consequences for young people. In order to save themselves from falling into trap, teenagers must first educate themselves about the dangers of doing drugs. Parents can also help by being a good role model for their children.

In recent years, drug abuse has become prevalent in many countries. While this problem has various effects on the people and society, several solutions can be brought up to reduce drug abuse and its side effects.

Drug addiction of any family member may threaten the foundation of the family. The drug abuse impacts the behavior of the addict and causes mistreatment of other members. This situation may lead the spouse to argument and finally divorce. Nevertheless, One possible way for families to solve the explained problem is to get counseling, and also send the addict to addiction treatment centers. As a result, if they overcome addiction, the households may prevent divorce, and the foundation of the family may be preserved.

A further serious impact of drug abuse is on the security of the community. Since increasing amounts of money are spent for these substances, after a while the addict loses all their money, and decides to earn money from illegal means.In this situation, Governments have a crucial role to maintain public safety and reduce illegal happenings. For instance, they need to train their police officers to improve their abilities to reduce breaking the law. They can also increase the number of its forces to fight stronger against crimes. Therefore, the governments can reduce the illegal consequences of substance abuse.

In conclusion, although drug abuse has many detrimental effects on families and society, if government and citizens work together to reduce numbers of addict, they can decline the damaging impacts of substance use.

People all in modern societies use drugs. But today’s youth are experimenting with both legal and illegal drugs, and at an increasingly early age. Some sociologists claim that parents and other society members often set a bad example. Discuss the causes & some effects of widespread drug use by young people in modern-day society. Make any recommendations you feel are necessary to help fight youth drug abuse.

Cause/Solution essay

Introduction

Sentences 1&2 – Paraphrase the topic with the use of synonyms to establish a base on which you will elaborate upon.

Sentence 3 – Mention that the essay will understand the causes of drug use and offer solutions to the same.

Body Paragraphs

Paragraph 1 – Outline the causes of drug use. Mention how the environment of an individual leads to it, how people fall into addiction and such arguments. Give real examples if necessary.

Paragraph 2 – Elucidate the solutions. Talk about awareness, the role of parents and the need of the youth to say no when put in the position of drug consumption. Cite examples if necessary.

Summarise the essay and state your opinion.

Drug consumption has provoked arguments that make people think about the relevance of narcotics in modern society. Bands of movements have argued to legalize drugs, while many still feel consumption needs to be penalised. This essay will delve deeper into this topic and analyse how people initiate their contact with drugs and how one can prevent oneself from doing so.

To begin with, the widespread use of authorised, as well as unauthorised drug use, is due to an individual’s life and environment. Many people “try” a substance for experience, soon falling into an addictive urge. Some people imbibe drug usage, according to sociologists, as their role models like their parents and society members set a wrong precedent by using drugs themselves. Drug use has pervasive and harmful effects on users, as most of them directly affect cognition, organs, senses & appetite, impair decision-making and indulge in unlawful habits that endanger themselves as well as others. It has been widely documented that using drugs like cocaine, LSD, methamphetamine, heroin and so on can not only lead to addiction but, in dire cases, even death.

Young people are inquisitive, and often their thirst for the unknown is only quenched once they experience it. So, awareness must be instilled from a young age regarding drug use and its impending consequences. Films and art often glamourise drug use, so movies need to have a discretion advisory that warns people not to follow what’s shown. Necessary steps need to be taken by the parents as well, like readying the child against drug use. But, the most significant contribution in this fight stands with the youth, who need to learn to say no to such advances. One must realise the power and importance of the word “no” in this menacing situation, and it only comes with exemplary willpower. Hence, the youth needs to reflect consciously that drugs are bad for health, and there is no argument otherwise.

In conclusion, drug consumption has no two answers to it – it only leads to the destruction of the body, the family and the person. Unfortunately, many people are actively falling into this trap. There needs to be a firm commitment from the youth to fight this, and positive steps will undoubtedly prevail.

Meaning – stimulate or give rise to a reaction or emotion. Example – He shouldn’t hit the bully, but he was provoked.

• Delve 

Meaning – reach inside a receptacle and search for something. Example – In today’s physics class, we will delve into the concept of refraction.

• Imbibe  

Meaning – absorb or assimilate (ideas or knowledge). Example – The students imbibe what their teachers teach.

Meaning – an earlier event or action that is regarded as an example or guide to be considered in subsequent similar circumstances. Example – The judge looked for a precedent in the hit-and-run case.

• Pervasive  

Meaning – (especially of an unwelcome influence or physical effect) spreading widely throughout an area or a group of people. Example – Alcohol use and addiction is pervasive and dangerous.

• Inquisitive 

Meaning – curious or inquiring. Example – Marie is an inquisitive little toddler, always asking questions.

• Quenched  

Meaning – satisfy. Example – His thirst for victory was quenched when he won the race.

• Impending 

Meaning – about to happen. Example – With the low performances, his dismissal from the team is impending.

Meaning – make (something) seem glamorous or desirable, especially spuriously so. Example – The actor’s presence glamourised the evening.

• Prevail  

Meaning – prove more powerful than opposing forces; be victorious. Example – The determined ones always prevail against adversity.
