University of Neuchâtel

With a total of four faculties (Arts and Humanities, Science, Law and Economics), and ranked among the twenty best global universities with fewer than 5000 students, the University of Neuchâtel offers focused and innovative education, largely thanks to its research centres, which boost its profile beyond Switzerland’s borders. Modestly sized and open to the world, the University of Neuchâtel puts its students at the heart of everything it does.

The University of Neuchâtel wants to be as relevant as possible when it comes to the disruptions of the 4.0 Revolution, in which it plays its own part. With around 80% of its student body working in the humanities and social science sectors, it is dedicated to finding efficient solutions to the issues of the future, given the societal, economic, legal and cultural consequences of technological innovations.

Excellent supervision

At Neuchâtel, internationally renowned professors — chosen for their expertise in their fields of study, their teaching skills and their academic networks — are at the heart of an effective system of mentoring, allowing students to flourish in their studies.

A modestly sized institution

Discussion, exchange and the building of relationships are fundamental at the University of Neuchâtel, making the learning experience anything but anonymous. Teachers are always available, and there is a real spirit of solidarity at the heart of the student community.

A culture of interaction

At the University of Neuchâtel, students actively participate in classes, and take part in group work, seminars and fieldwork excursions.

In contact with the research community

From the start of their studies, students have the opportunity to interact with doctoral assistants and researchers, and to take part in many different projects. The inclusion of Master’s students in the University’s research teams opens up a variety of interesting career paths, thanks to the relationships which its institutes maintain with businesses.

A hotline to society

The University is constantly evolving: the tuition on offer aims to respond to the needs of society today, and anticipate those of tomorrow.

Openness to the world

Each faculty offers ‘Eurocompatible’ study programmes, at both Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. Over 20% of the University of Neuchâtel’s student body hails from overseas, representing a hundred different nationalities: a great asset, not just in educational terms but for university life more widely.

Student services

The University of Neuchâtel has an effective housing service, high-performance IT infrastructure, a social support office, a language centre, and a career development service, as well as a huge variety of sporting and cultural activities.

French is the main teaching language at Bachelor’s level, and the most frequently used at Master’s level, although certain Master’s programmes and courses are taught entirely in English. The Language Centre gives students the chance to perfect their knowledge of English, German, Italian and Spanish.

For non-Francophones

Studying at Neuchâtel is also a great opportunity to improve your French. As well as full-time and part-time courses, the Institute of French Language and Culture (ILCF) offers free French classes for students whose mother tongue is not French.

The position is located at the Laboratory of Bioanalytical Chemistry, a small research unit supervised by Prof. Stephan von Reuss, that provides an inspiring work environment with excellent conditions for state-of-the-art research ( http://www.unine.ch/bioanalyticalchem/home.html ). For our international team, we are looking for a self-motivated researcher with a background in natural products chemistry or life sciences and expertise in comparative metabolomics.

Job starts: available immediately (open till filled)

Term: 4 years (+1 year if required; renewable each year)

Location: Neuchâtel, Switzerland

Salary: 34’800 – 41’135 CHF / year (50% of LI01-LI04;  https://www.unine.ch/srh/assistant-e-s-doctorant-e-s )

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Our research at the Laboratory of Bioanalytical Chemistry is focused on secondary metabolism and small molecule signaling in nematodes (roundworms). Aiming to elucidate molecular structures, biosynthetic pathways, and the ecological significance of novel nematode-derived natural products, we combine a diversity of techniques, including large scale cultivation of nematodes, chromatographic fractionation of nematode metabolomes, structure elucidation of isolated natural products using MS and NMR techniques, confirmation of structure assignments by total synthesis, MS-based comparative metabolomics and stable isotope labelling, as well as functional bioassays.

Potential research topics for the open PhD position include: PROJECT 1 - the systematic analysis of lipogenesis and lipid metabolism in the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans using comparative lipidomics / metabolomics and reverse genetics; or PROJECT 2 - the systematic analysis of secondary metabolism in bacterivorous nematodes using comparative metabolomics and molecular networks.

For further information please contact Prof. Stephan von Reuss ( [email protected] ).

Where to apply

Requirements.

Qualified applicants hold a Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry (or a closely related field) and have demonstrated practical experience in mass spectrometry (MS)-based comparative metabolomics. Required skills in microbiology and nematology techniques can be acquired on the job. Additional project-related requirements include:

For PROJECT 1  general understanding of biosynthetic pathways, especially lipogenesis, is required. Basic understanding of reverse genetics using deletion mutants and/or gene silencing by RNAi is highly desirable.

For PROJECT 2 practical experience in the isolation and structure elucidation of natural products using NMR and MS techniques is required. Experience in molecular networks is highly desirable.

Villanova University Awards Mendel Medal to Eminent Vaccinologist and Pediatrician Peter Hotez, MD, PhD

Villanova University Awards Mendel Medal to Eminent Vaccinologist and Pediatrician Peter Hotez, MD, PhD

VILLANOVA, Pa. (August 29, 2024) — Villanova University has named Professor Peter Hotez, MD, PhD, co-director of the Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development and founding dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, as the 2024 recipient of the Mendel Medal . Dr. Hotez will present the Mendel Medal lecture, titled “Global Immunizations and the Antipoverty Vaccines: The Science vs the Anti-Science,” on Friday, November 8, 2024.

The Mendel Medal is named for 19th-century Augustinian friar and scientist Gregor Mendel, best known as “the father of modern genetics,” for his discovery of the celebrated laws of heredity that bear his name. Dr. Hotez is the 54th recipient of the award, which was first presented by Villanova in 1929 and is given to outstanding contemporary scientists in recognition of their accomplishments.

“Villanova University is proud to celebrate Dr. Peter Hotez’s valuable advancements to science and medicine by presenting him with the 2024 Mendel Medal,” said Fr. Kail Ellis, OSA, PhD, Special Assistant to the President and Dean Emeritus of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Villanova University. “His contributions have had a global impact, and in true Augustinian character are concentrated on helping communities devoid of certain medical necessities that are crucial to health. Additionally, his quest to educate the public on vaccine science are both an embodiment of this award, and Gregor Mendel himself.”

Dr. Hotez’s lifelong dedication to the development of novel vaccines has impacted millions of people throughout the world. In 2022, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize after co-leading the development of a low-cost and patent-free Covid vaccine technology, leading to the delivery of 100 million vaccine doses to India and Indonesia. His coronavirus research includes ongoing work to develop a pan-coronavirus vaccine to target multiple variants at once. Active in the fight against neglected diseases of poverty, specifically, Dr. Hotez has worked diligently to develop vaccines for human hookworm anemia infection—which affects roughly 400 million individuals worldwide—and schistosomiasis, both of which are currently in clinical trials. He has also devised novel vaccines for Chagas disease and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), among others, and is an author of more than 700 scientific publications.

In addition to his contributions to vaccine technology and the prevention of neglected diseases of poverty, Dr. Hotez is active in combating vaccine misinformation, particularly through his five authored books. He has been recognized by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) with their Scientific Freedom and Responsibility Award, and by the American Medical Association (AMA) with their Scientific Achievement Award, among numerous other accolades from various esteemed entities. Prof. Hotez is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and holds several honorary doctoral degrees.

According to Dr. Hotez: “I’m thrilled to be honored by Villanova University and to receive a recognition that commemorates Gregor Mendel, one of my science heroes. It is especially exciting to view the list of international scientists who have also received the Mendel Medal, and I’m humbled to join this extraordinary group”

Villanova University, as an institution founded by the Augustinian Order, plays a key role in sustaining Mendel’s legacy. The Mendel Medal is awarded to outstanding scientists who have worked to advance the cause of science and, by their lives and their standing before the world as scientists, have demonstrated that between true science and true religion there is no intrinsic conflict. Under Caruso’s leadership, the Waide Center will pursue three strategic directions— curriculum, research, and outreach—through research support, a speaker series, and other initiatives.

“I am honored to be joining Fairfield University as professor of applied ethics and management, and director of the Patrick J. Waide Center for Applied Ethics,” Caruso said. “Over the next few years, I aim to grow the Waide Center into a national and international hub for applied ethics by expanding its activities and reach.” He envisions this growth through an annual Waide Center seminar series, which will feature eight talks by world-class scholars in various areas of applied ethics. Additionally, the center will host conferences, workshops, professional training programs, and student-oriented roundtables.

Housed within the Charles F. Dolan School of Business, the Patrick J. Waide Center for Applied Ethics advances learning, research, and dialogue about the leading ethical issues of our time. The Waide Center works with Fairfield University students and faculty, as well as regional, national, and international leaders in a wide variety of fields, to develop strategies for managing ethical challenges.

Caruso’s esteemed academic career spans several international universities. He will continue his association with Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, as an honorary professor of philosophy, and with the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, where he serves as co-director of the Justice Without Retribution Network. Before joining Fairfield University, Caruso was a distinguished professor of Philosophy at SUNY Corning. An accomplished scholar, he is the author of six books, editor of five additional collections, and has published over forty journal articles and book chapters. Caruso’s research focuses on free will, moral responsibility, criminal punishment, philosophy of law, moral psychology, philosophy of mind, neurolaw, and applied issues in moral, legal, and political philosophy.

PhD MathEd student receives Best Scientific Paper award in NCEME 2024

02 Sep 2024

Quality Education

Mark Lester B Garcia, a PhD Mathematics Education student, is one of the recipients of the Best Scientific Paper award at the National Conference on Educational Measurement and Evaluation (NCEME) 2024 for his paper entitled "Leveraging International Large-Scale Assessments: Insights from an Item-Writing Professional Development Program for High School Mathematics Teachers." This paper is co-authored by his dissertation adviser, Dr Catherine P Vistro-Yu.

Mark Lester Garcia

Held on 29 August to 31 August 2024 at De La Salle University, Manila and organized by the Philippine Educational Measurement and Evaluation Association (PEMEA), NCEME 2024 aims to bring together various educational stakeholders to discuss issues and propose solutions related to educational assessment at the national level. In line with this year's theme, "Assessment Innovations: Initiatives for Education Reform in the Philippines," the keynote speeches and panel discussions were about the dissemination of research findings and recommendations geared towards education reform, particularly in the planning and implementation of assessments, with emphasis on those from the report of the Second Congressional Commission on Education. The conference was attended by 220 in-person participants and 100 online participants. Seven, out of 45 accepted papers, were named Best Scientific Paper during the awarding ceremony.

As a PhD MathEd student, Garcia believes in the importance of being cognizant of the broader societal issues, significant research studies, as well as national policies and legislation that may have direct or indirect effects to both teaching and assessment practices down to the classroom level. Attending NCEME 2024 also provided him critical updates about the imminent trends in educational assessment, such as the increased importance of embracing international education standards promoted by International Large-Scale Assessments such as PISA and TIMSS, and the movement towards the incorporation of advanced assessment strategies such as those in adaptive learning.

Mark Lester Garcia

Garcia is grateful to the Office of the Assistant Vice President for Research, Creative Work, and Innovation, the School of Science and Engineering, and the Office of the Assistant Vice President for Graduate Education for supporting his participation in the NCEME 2024.

PhD in Social Welfare FAQs

What program formats are available?

Founded in 1952 as one of the first doctoral programs in social welfare in America, the PhD program at the Mandel School is designed to develop leaders in social work research, policy and teaching.

In response to the different needs and interests of our students, the Mandel School offers both full-time and part-time formats. The doctoral program is on-campus only.

  • 37 credits of required and elective coursework
  • Passing a qualifying exam
  • 18 hours of dissertation credits
  • Completion of a dissertation
  • Two years of coursework (4 semesters)

  • Accommodates social work professionals who are balancing employment commitments and PhD study
  • Three years of coursework (6 semesters)
  • Six courses per year—three courses in the fall semesters and three courses in the spring semesters

What are classes like?

Our PhD curriculum emphasizes the creative and evaluative knowledge and skills necessary for an independent inquiry, critical thinking, research and theory. Both the full-time and part-time formats are structured to maximize interaction among students, as well as between students and faculty.

Our curriculum and professional development opportunities are focused on assisting students to achieve competencies in research, theory, teaching and leadership. Student performance on the four competencies is assessed annually as part of our faculty’s review of students’ activities and accomplishments.

Course content includes:

  • Philosophy of science and theory building
  • Theories of human behavior
  • Advanced research design
  • Measurement and data analysis
  • Qualitative research models and methods
  • Integrated research seminar
  • Social work education

See the Course Descriptions

Doctoral students have access to the Mandel School Ph.D. lounge / computer lab 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Each student will receive a key to the room. Please note that students should always have their ID on hand when they are in the building after hours. Per the CWRU police department, they may be asked to show their ID to verify that they are permitted to be in the building.

What’s the research about?

Mandel School faculty members are nationally recognized for leadership in research and scholarship and boast an extensive portfolio of funded research.

Their high-ranking levels of productivity and groundbreaking research impacts upon diverse fields of social work, transforming individuals and communities all over the world. Our five interdisciplinary research centers tackle society’s most difficult and complex issues—from urban poverty to youth violence to trauma and adversity—and investigate and foster the implementation of innovative and evidence-based practices.

Our faculty’s work covers the lifespan from prenatal to the elderly, with studies on both the micro- and macro levels of social welfare. Findings from the faculty’s research are used by human service agencies globally, county and state governments, federal agencies, and governments outside the USA to improve practice and service delivery as well as to have an impact on public policy.

There are many opportunities for doctoral students to become involved with faculty research projects and activities. Full-time students receive a four-year research fellowship, which provides individualized training in social work research activities with a faculty member closely matched with the student’s research interests.

In addition to the research fellowship, students can apply for a mentorship in research, which provides stipends for students to work with faculty mentors on research projects. Additionally, students can serve as staff on faculty members’ funded grants or serve as research assistants at one of the Mandel School’s research centers.

How can I get involved in teaching?

Our doctoral program provides formal coursework on social work education and teaching mentorships, allowing doctoral students to develop knowledge of the history and current context of social work education and skills in education program design, curriculum development, and the delineation and assessment of educational objectives.

Students have an opportunity to participate in seminars on teaching offered by the University Center for Innovations in Teaching Excellence. Students can serve as adjunct faculty who teach courses in our master’s degree program in our on-campus, intensive weekend and online teaching formats. Doctoral students typically leave the program with a teaching portfolio that can be used as a strong foundation for employment.

What kind of professional development is available?

Our program enjoys a diverse and talented faculty committed to doctoral education who have close working relationships with doctoral students. Students work individually with a faculty mentor throughout their doctoral training:

  • Hands-on experience in various phases of the research process
  • Learn and practice teaching skills
  • Develop and give presentations for national professional conferences
  • Active involvement in writing and publication

In addition to coursework, there are a variety of supports for career development and preparation for leadership in the profession:

  • Regular workshops on class and conference presentations and professional writing and publications
  • Colloquia and workshops on research methodology
  • Practice and preparation for job interviews
  • Colloquia presentations of completed dissertation research

We consider this individual investment in our doctoral students an investment in the future of the social work profession.
