It is not all that long ago when we began using so many electrical appliances in everyday life. Japan’s first “pulsator-type” washing machine, a prototype of current models, reached the market in 1953. Its popularity exploded as it was a convenient product that considerably reduced household work loads. Full-scale television broadcasting also started in 1953. This year set a precedent for the expanding use of various home appliances; so much so that it was later referred to as “year one of electrification”.

Among these new appliances, the washing machine, refrigerator and black-and-white television set were called the “three sacred treasures” (referring to the Imperial regalia of Japan, the sword, mirror and jewel) that everyone longed for at that time. With incomes increasing as a result of rapid economic growth, consumer demand for these home appliances skyrocketed. By 1973 most households had purchased these 3 appliances.

Japan’s electricity use steadily increased starting around this time. Even after the “oil shock” of 1973, electricity use increased about 2.5 fold during the 35 years to 2008. The most substantial increases occurred in the consumer/household and transportation sectors. The increase in household use was partly due to changes in social structure, such as an increasing number of households, and also by changes in private lifestyles demanding more and more convenience and comfort. This was a time of “individual electrification” when each individual, rather than each household, came to own a set of electrical appliances.

Establishment of the Atelier Non-Electric

Despite these social trends, Yasuyuki Fujimura, a doctor of engineering and an inventor, has been advocating a “non-electric” lifestyle that intentionally avoids the use of electricity. The phrase “non-electric” may sound a little unfamiliar, but it is different from “anti-electrification” that condemns electricity on principle. The phrase is meant to communicate the idea that it should be possible to live happily and richly while enjoying a moderate level of comfort and convenience without depending on electricity.

Fujimura has a Ph.D. in physics and originally got a job at a major equipment manufacturer. He was an elite engineer involved in the development of advanced technologies including plasma processing machines, cogeneration systems and gas heat pumps. His turning point was when his newborn son was diagnosed with allergic asthma. As he found out, at that time, in the 1980s, there was a surprising increase in the number of children with allergies. As he continued his research, he learned about environmental problems. He realized that the environment was deteriorating and harming the health of children as one of the down sides of rapid economic growth fuelled by the vigorous promotion of scientific and technological advancement and the pursuit of more and more convenience and comfort.

To create a new lifestyle, Fujimura started to work on the theme of “non-electric” in 2000. In 2003, he established the Atelier Non-Electric and continues to develop many non-electric products.

Atelier Non-Electric is currently located at the foot of the Nasu Highlands, one of Japan’s major resort areas in northern Tochigi Prefecture. Transportation is convenient — Nasu is about 150 kilometers north of Tokyo and can be reached in 90 minutes by the Tohoku Bullet Train.

The approximately 1-hectare site is a kind of exhibition space that presents a “totally non-electric life.” A non-electric house utilizes chaff, whose heat insulation performance is as good as glass wool, to the maximum. A non-electric composting toilet uses the power of microorganisms, which can decompose human waste into manure without an electric pump. The non-electric bath house uses a variety of energies such as solar power, firewood, or even garbage. These non-electric facilities are located around a pond.

Refrigerator that cools without electricity

There are many interesting home appliances that can be operated without electric power in the atelier where various trial products are made, as well as in the main house. One example is a non-electric refrigerator. How can it refrigerate food without electric power? It uses a phenomenon called radiational cooling together with the natural convection currents of water.

Radiational cooling occurs when infrared radiation is emitted from an object’s surface, causing its temperature to decrease. On a clear night, infrared rays are emitted from the ground into the atmosphere, cooling the air down. This is why the night is extremely cold in the desert. Most people have experienced water’s natural convection currents when warm water rises while cold water sinks and pools at the lowest level.

The cooling unit of the refrigerator (capacity 200 litres) is made of metal that has high thermal conductivity. A large volume of water (about 250 litres) is stored around this unit as a coolant. Radiator panels are placed on top so that the inner surface of the panel touches the coolant water. The heat of things stored in the cooling unit is conveyed to the surrounding water by the metal, and the heat goes up by natural convection. Thus it is conveyed to the radiator panel, and emitted through radiational cooling.

The system is most efficient on a clear night when there is less water vapor in the air. One clear night (and sometimes even one cloudy night) every three days can keep the temperature inside the refrigerator at around 7 to 8 degrees Celsius even on a mid-summer day. This innovative refrigerator belies our present-day common sense assumption that things cannot be refrigerated without electricity.

Some values take precedence over comfort, convenience and speed

Another popular Atelier product is a handy non-electric coffee roaster. The roaster is made of aluminium and shaped like a saucepan with a handle. Raw green coffee beans are put into the pan and roasted on a gas stove for three to five minutes by shaking the pan right and left. The beans are roasted evenly and as lightly or deeply as the consumer prefers.

The process of roasting raw coffee beans, cooling them down, grinding them in a coffee mill and pouring fresh brewed coffee into a cup takes about 25 minutes. Not many people want to take such a lot of time to make a cup of coffee in today’s society, which requires speed everywhere and at all times. Fujimura did not actually expect much when he started to market the roaster.

This product, however, has sold some 8,500 units so far since it hit the market six years ago, even though it has not been widely advertised, except on the website of Atelier Non-Electric.

“I think it means there are more people enjoying the process,” Fujimura says. “So far in Japan, people have sought comfort, convenience, and speed. But we can’t always find happiness that way. I think the popularity of the roaster shows that some people have started thinking that speed is not always the best answer.”

What kind of technology does not hamper sustainability?

Although it is a very simple tool, it took six months to develop the roaster. Coffee beans need to be roasted evenly. The material used needs good thermal conductivity so that it will not take too long to roast beans. Also, the shape had to be designed so that the raw coffee beans roll around easily in the container. Furthermore, the sound of the rolling beans needs to be pretty and pleasant. “To make a good non-electric roaster, I needed to use my ingenuity. Thus it took me half a year,” Fujimura laughs.

On this misplaced assumption, we tend to desire the products of excessively advanced science and technology that promote convenience and comfort, and thus we have placed a huge burden on the environment, leading to the energy crisis and other critical situations.

On the other hand, Fujimura does not deny technology itself. His problem is with technology that hampers sustainability. He sometimes holds workshops on making non-electric refrigerators that are geared to non-scientific mothers with small children. These non-electric fridges are so simple that such mothers can easily set them up. We can fix what we make ourselves when it is broken. As science and technology advance, we need to take back technologies that anybody can build, use and repair. Fujimura thinks that is one of the keys to stopping runaway science and technology.

Rethinking affluence

The non-electric way of life that Fujimura suggests is not just a lifestyle without electricity. It also incorporates his philosophy on leading a happy and affluent life using appropriate technology without depending on energy and money.

Fujimura’s dream is to make the Non-Electric Atelier a theme park that showcases the many options we have for fun, affluence, and happiness, particularly in the area of housing. He wants to show that non-electric houses — even when they are built by non-professionals — are lovely yet strong, good for the health while consuming little or no energy, and furthermore can be built practically for free. He would like to make the atelier a kind of housing exhibit, and believes it will encourage people in the younger generation who feel they can’t afford to own a home.

Awareness of the energy crisis is growing worldwide and in Japan, where many people are re-thinking their energy supply after the Great East Japan Earthquake. In this context, on non-electric technology is becoming increasingly important.

Imagine living in a world with little or no light when the sun set. That's the plight of an estimated 300 million Indians — a quarter of the population, mostly the rural poor.

They're not left completely in the dark. Kerosene lamps provide light. Cow dung patties provide fuel for cooking. But these options take a toll on time and health. That's why India's prime minister is calling for global partnerships to bring green energy to the powerless millions.

The village of Sadikpur is a good place to gain an understanding of life without electricity. It's about a five-hour drive from Delhi in India's most populous state of Utter Pradesh, in the north of the country.

The road leading to the village is lined with cow dung pies drying in the sun, a serene if jarring scene that lends a 19th-century feel.

They're made by women like Sagarwati, 30. She digs her hands deep in manure and slaps cow dung into paddies to burn as fuel to cook for her three children.

Watching mother and daughter-in-law Sheela and Sunita Devi provide the manual horse-power for their shredder, I discover that it's a village operated by hand. Their scarves dangling dangerously close to the wheel they push to move the blade that slices sugarcane into feed for animals, who are quartered steps from their door.

Baburam says fumes from kerosene and wood burning indoors "burn our eyes" and "we cannot breathe." Kerosene fires and explosions are well-documented. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency , "exposure to indoor air pollution" as a result of smoke from burning animal or vegetable matter is estimated to cause more than a half a million premature deaths a year in India.

One study has found that India's indoor pollution contributes to disabilities and early death to a greater degree than tobacco, high blood pressure and heart attacks, says Rahul Tongia. He's a fellow with Brookings India who specializes in sustainable development and energy policy.

"It disproportionately impacts those who are indoors a lot, which is women and children," Tongia adds.

The World Health Organization says India has 154 deaths per 10,000 people from chronic respiratory diseases — the world's highest rate.

And in Sadikpur, there lack of electricity could jeopardize its future. Farmer Papu Singh, 28, says more than one family has turned down his proposal for marriage. The brooding bachelor asks, "Who wants to marry a poor man" in a place with no power?

It's not as if Sadikpur hasn't tried to get electricity. The village chief has a file spilling with petitions accumulated over the years, asking for connection to the national power grid. The requests are caught up in a complex web of government edicts, public power companies and private suppliers that is electricity in India.

"It's a very big country," Kumar replies. "In 67 years we have completed almost 95 percent of the country [getting] electrified."

The yawning energy shortfall in one of the world's largest electricity markets is stirring opportunity.

A group of some 200 high-profile investors convened in New Delhi this week to strategize on renewable energy for India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi told them that India needs $100 billion in green energy and is prepared to offer incentives.

Companies in attendance ranged from the U.S.-based SunEdison to the Indian conglomerate Reliance . They pledged to double India's energy capacity by adding 250,000 megawatts of sustainable green energy to the national grid over the next five years. As in the U.S., coal is India's main source of energy.

India's Minister for Power, Coal and Renewable Energy, Piyush Goyal told NPR that even if "some fraction" of the commitments does not materialize, the pledges will help reduce India's dependence on fossil fuels.

"And for the people of India, it's more power to the villages, it's more power to the common man, it's more power to the last man on the street who's been deprived of it for 67 years," Goyal says.

In the short term, small entrepreneurs are making a go of it.

"This is the place where you don't have any electricity at all," says Ananth Aravamudan, who accompanied me to the remote villages that lie in land in the southern Indian state of Karnataka that the government wants preserved as forest.

Aravamudan is with the Indian energy company Selco (Solar Electric Light Company) which has provided power solutions to 100,000 underserved households since 1994. Field staff works with local banks to make loans to poor villagers to buy Selco's $200 solar home lighting system on installments for as little as 100 rupees — $1.60 — a week.

Its founder, social entrepreneur Harish Hande , says the mission is to "eradicate poverty and the darkness" with renewable energy. He says the poor are not looking for sympathy; they are looking "for a partner."

In the village of Tulasikere, women fetch water from a well as they have for centuries. A 36-year-old farmer named Dummada says "there's been no development here for the last three generations" though politicians have promised "roads, lighting and health centers."

Feeling "let down by the government," Dummada says he electrified his home on his own with solar power and became the first in the village to acquire the small solar home lighting system.

Three quarters of the villagers now have solar panels installed on their roofs, and there are many benefits. Dummada says the panels charge the "portable torches villagers use at night to protect their fields against pillaging animals," including elephants.

He says children can study at night with solar-charged lanterns. Selco pioneered a lantern program to distribute solar lights to kids who first had to come to school in order to get the battery charged.

Harish Hande says, "There is a huge potential of entrepreneurs, mathematicians, innovators, inventors that is just lurking behind darkness. So by putting that one light, we are taking the first step out of ten" toward a more equitable India.

In today’s era, electricity plays a vital role in our daily life, a day without electricity is very hard to imagine. In this contrary, we are going to present an essay on a day without electricity.

Imagine sitting a dark, confined space in absolute silence and no human being around. That’s how it would feel to live a day without electricity.

Firstly, let me list out what all I would not be able to do. I would have to say goodbye to my daily morning coffee as, without the help of my refrigerator, my milk would have gone bad. And black coffee is an atrocity that I cannot face, forget tasting.

With a grumpy start to my morning, I would enter my washroom to shower only to realize that today would be the day I freeze to death as my instant geyser would not be working.

With my body shivering and my teeth chattering, I would rush to my room only to realize that my phone is on 10 percent battery and my hairdryer will not switch on today. What a miserable situation it would be.

After getting ready somehow, I would rush downstairs to realize that after a long time, I will need to eat some fruit or ready-made items due to the uselessness of my toaster I would have to forgo my usual toast and jam for the day.

As I reach school, I realize it would turn out to be a fun day as due to the absence of electricity, we could be out of our classes for the entire day. It would turn out to be an unintentional picnic by itself. Well, the food may not be up to the mark due to obvious reasons but we would manage with what we have.

The ride back home after our usual class hours would be tiring and sweaty due to the lack of air-conditioning inside the bus, leaving us to battle the city’s humidity and pollution through the panes of our open bus windows.

On a much larger scale, there would be a global crisis as no electricity would mean complete darkness after sunset. It would also lead to a lapse of our economy as online trading and e-commerce would suffer losses of high stakes and fail to record every move or change in numbers and keeping track of the ever-changing stock market would be a whole new nightmare.

It would lead to various complications in the Healthcare industry as most Intensive care units rely on ventilators and various other pieces of equipment that rely on electricity to work and keep patients alive.

On a global stage, there would a standstill situation as getting messages across from one place to another would not be able to take place at a drop of a hat. Likewise, news agencies would have to step down for a day as neither would they be able to shoot any content nor would they be able to broadcast it for a day.

On an industry basis, there would be a huge slow down as almost all technology and machines would shut down for a day leaving production output to zero. Every IT company would face horrors as they would not be able to even implement their basis work for the day, leading to various complications and unwanted situations creating liabilities for the company.

While all of this would be on, there would another face to the entire situation as a whole.

Industries that implement and propagate usage of solar-powered systems would be able to work as usual without any hindrances. For various institutions, sustainable developments would be given first priority and put into use to set off the process of manufacturing again.

And while a majority of the population would miss out on the latest meme, or the launch of the latest song, they would feel a sense of gratification towards having reduced usage of electricity and leading the way to a more sustainable and pollution-free way of life.

Electricity is the greatest blessing for mankind. We can- not think of a world without it. We have become used to the comforts provided by it. Most of our domestic needs are dependent on electricity such as bulbs, fans, heaters, washing machines, water pumps, and so on.

Frequent power cuts and blackouts have given us an experience of life without electricity. At such times we feel helpless and frustrated. In the absence of electricity, none can perform his duties to the fullest.

If it is a day in summer and electricity fails, we cannot work, nor take rest. Our whole body would start sweating (perspiring). Our clothes would become wet with perspiration and we would feel irritated and start cursing Delhi Vidyut Board for power cuts. People would come out of their houses and block the main roads in order to draw the attention of the government towards the failure of electricity. Such is the dependence of man today on electricity. People can’t sleep without fans in summer days or nights.

In the absence of electricity, factories would come to a halt, work in offices would suffer, and transactions in banks would come to a standstill. No water supply will be provided. Total industrial work will stop and nothing can be produced. No milk will be supplied by the DMS or the Mother Dairy plants.

Electricity runs our petrol pumps, railway stations, schools, and colleges, hospitals, and airplanes. In its absence, there will be total chaos just as it happened recently when there was intense fog. All the public and private places would wear a deserted look in its absence. The whole area would plunge into darkness. We shall start thinking about how our forefathers led lives without electricity or when there was no electricity.

For all our sources of entertainment, we are dependent upon electricity. We would have to go without entertainment in its absence. Radio sets, television sets, VCR or VCP, and cassette players would become worthless.

Going back to the dark ages (when there was no electricity) is one of our four greatest fears as we would be deprived of our present-day comforts. Therefore, it is high time that we must take urgent steps to keep our resources full which help in the production of electricity. We should avoid wastage of electricity by all means.

It can be generated from many different sources. It can be sent almost instantaneously over long distances, carrying either messages or power and it can be converted simply and efficiently into other forms of energy as needed.

            Because of this versatility, electricity plays a part in nearly every aspect of modern life. It provides light and heat, and mechanical power and makes possible the telephone and telegraph, radio and television and countless other necessities and luxuries. Nowadays,  we take gadgets like the light, fan mixer, oven, iron, refrigerator, air conditioner so much for granted without giving a thought to its working.

            We often hear our grandmothers talking of the good old days without electricity, when one would rise with the dawn and sleep early. All studying would be in the daylight hours; cooking on wood - fire had its own flavour and meals would be family meals to be eaten together at a fixed time by candle light. Once when we had no electricity for 8 hrs. life came to a standstill. The bells didn’t ring. The washing machine went dead. TV set was dark and silent. The radio was just a box without a voice. The food was spoiled. The electric clock is about without flashlights, knocking on each other's doors instead of ringing doorbells. Travelling by trains (electric) would be affected leaving millions stranded. In other words, chaos reigned supreme. Such power failures are a housewife’s nightmares. Chores which are quickly attended to remain unattended.

            We are so dependent on electricity and the comforts it provides, that without it we are literally left in darkness. In this modern day such black - outs are frequent because demand is more than supply. Our population has increased manifold and so has our consumption. Hence there is over - loading and power breakdowns. The day is not far off when we will face an acute power crisis.

            We just cannot imagine what our life would be without electricity.

In a landslide-stricken town in California, life is like camping with no power, gas

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. — Nick Mardesic and his family are living off the power grid, so light at night comes from a flashlight, and a hot meal and shower require driving several miles to his parents’ home.

The family is not in a rugged location, but rather on a scenic peninsula on the edge of Los Angeles. And they aren’t off the grid by choice. Their power and gas were cut because worsening landslides from two years of heavy rain are threatening to tear apart scores of multimillion-dollar homes perched over the Pacific Ocean.

Mardesic has been fighting for months to keep his home standing. Sections of his front yard have sunk about 3.5 feet. Deep fissures snake across the walls of his house and a piece of dry wall fell from his ceiling. The sidewalk and one end of his driveway have caved, creating a gaping hole that has exposed an underground water pipe. His bedroom is on the verge of collapse, he said, so he has been placing wood on a beam under the house and jacks it up. In the past five months, he has spent about $50,000 to keep his home elevated.

“It’s something you see out of a movie,” he said outside the home he shares with his wife and two children, ages 3 and 1. “It’s almost unbelievable … just watching your house sink away.”

The landslides are the latest catastrophe in California, already burdened by worsening wildfires and extreme weather that has swung from heat waves to torrential rains that have caused flooding and mudslides in the past year.

In Rancho Palos Verdes, entire homes have collapsed or been torn apart. Walls have shifted and large fissures have appeared on the ground. Evacuation warnings are in effect and swaths of the community have had their power and  gas turned off . Gas service was cut to more residents on Thursday and more were expected Friday. Others are contending with temporary water shutdowns to fix sewer lines.

Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Tuesday.

Jill Carlton, who has lived in the community for nearly 30 years, said it is good the problem has finally gotten the governor’s attention.

“They’ve been pressuring him for a long time and hopefully he’ll come down and actually visit us,” Carlton said, but she is disappointed “there’s still no aid to the individuals.”

The declaration instead opens state resources, such as emergency personnel, equipment and services. In an email, the city of Rancho Palos Verdes said it continues to urge state leaders and agencies to ask President Joe Biden to declare a federal disaster, which would trigger resources and possible individual help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Nearly 70 years ago, the Portuguese Bend landslide in Rancho Palos Verdes was triggered with the construction of a road through the area, which sits atop an ancient landslide. It destroyed 140 homes at the time and the land has moved ever since.

But the once slow-moving landslides began to rapidly accelerate after torrential rains drenched Southern California over the past two years. The land that once was sliding at an average of several inches per year is now moving between 9 to 12 inches (22.8 to 30.48 centimeters) weekly.

The rapid movement forced the dismantling earlier this year of  Wayfarers Chapel , a historic landmark designed by Frank Lloyd Wright’s son, Lloyd Wright. Scenic roads that wind through the city have been buckling, too. Signs warn motorists of dips and the shifting, disfigured terrain.

“Bicycles and motorcycles use extreme caution,” reads one sign. “Rough road” and “Slide area,” read others.

Mike Phipps, the city’s geologist, said the average rate of movement has slightly slowed but is still about 4 feet a month. “It’s still significant movement. It’s just, we’ve kind of reached full speed and are cruising right now,” he said.

Some residents believe leaks are to blame for the destruction in their community. They argue multiple burst water and sewer pipes that were not quickly or adequately fixed saturated the ground and contributed to the land movement.

Residents recently filed a  lawsuit  against the city, its water provider and others, alleging in part that negligence and their failure to act were “substantial factors” in the landslide acceleration “and the resulting damage to the homes and lives of the residents.”

The city said it doesn’t comment on pending litigation.

Newsom declares state of emergency in Rancho Palos Verdes after additional power shutoff

Jeffrey R. Knott, emeritus professor in geological sciences at California State University, Fullerton likened the argument to the chicken or the egg dilemma.

“Did the landslide move and cause the pipe to break? Or did the pipe break and then cause the landslide to move?” he said. “It’s an extraordinarily difficult thing to prove.”

Water leaks would contribute to the acceleration, but their significance is unknown, Knott added.

Last year, the city received a $23.3 million grant from FEMA for a project that officials hoped would slow the land movement by removing trapped water underground and stop rain from percolating into it in the future. But crews recently discovered a deeper and wider landslide.

“It’s like a freight train going down the hill. It’s billions of tons of earth,” Phipps said. “Trying to stop that is extremely challenging.”

Mayor John Cruikshank said finding funding for solutions poses challenges, as does preparing for the forthcoming rainy season.

“The climate is changing, and we’ve got to be more resilient,” he said. “We can’t always rely on old systems like above-ground wire and below-ground natural gas.”

In the meantime, residents are left with difficult decisions.

Those with collapsed or severely damaged homes have had to abandon them. Others, like Carlton’s neighbors, left after their utilities were shut off indefinitely. Some are relying on generators to keep the lights on and propane to cook.

Others, like Mardesic, are hoping for relocation assistance and said that without help they are stuck and unable to afford anything in Southern California’s pricey housing market. Mardesic’s house was valued at about $2.3 million before the damage, he said.

“What can we do but keep fixing our home and try to stay here?” said Mardesic, a maintenance supervisor. “We have nowhere to go.”

For now, his family plans to move into the pool house in the back that is less at risk of falling down the hillside.

Kyle Shanahan has never been under more pressure to win a Super Bowl.

He's entering his eighth season as the 49ers head coach. Only three head coaches have been with their current teams longer than Shanahan has been with the 49ers -- Mike Tomlin, John Harbaugh and Andy Reid. And all three of them have won Super Bowls.

Meanwhile, Shanahan is running out of excuses for being ringless. Because once again, he's coaching the best team in the NFL according to Pro Football Focus.

"The San Francisco 49ers, despite losing Super Bowl 58, remain one of the NFL's most talented teams," writes PFF analyst John Kosko . "Their biggest strength is their offensive playmakers: Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle, who all ranked in the top two at their positions in PFF grade in 2023. And the 49ers also have Deebo Samuel — one of the most electrifying offensive weapons in the NFL.

"San Francisco's pass protection was a weakness in 2023, ranking 24th in the NFL, but rookie Dominick Puni may help address offensive line issues alongside a healthy Trent Williams. The return of safety Talanoa Hufanga from injury could be a key factor in 2024, as the defense's performance declined in his absence last season. With their stacked offense and typically top-five defense, the 49ers are strong contenders for another Super Bowl run."

It's interesting that PFF never mentions Brock Purdy in this blurb, considering the 49ers are 17-4 with him as a starter, and if he goes down, their season is over despite all their offensive playmakers.

Former vice president and longtime Republican Dick Cheney has said he will vote for Kamala Harris in this year's US election.

The 83-year-old issued a statement announcing he will be backing the Democratic candidate because her Republican rival Donald Trump can "never be trusted with power again".

Mr Cheney has been an outspoken critic of Mr Trump, most notably during his daughter Liz Cheney's unsuccessful campaign to hold on to her Wyoming seat in Congress in 2022.

Ms Cheney, who said she would be voting for Ms Harris on Wednesday, was the first to announce her father's endorsement when she spoke to Mark Leibovich from The Atlantic magazine in an onstage interview at The Texas Tribune Festival in Austin on Friday.

"Wow," Mr Leibovich replied as the audience cheered.

In a statement issued later, Mr Cheney said that "in our nation's 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump".

"He can never be trusted with power again," he adds.

Asked for comment after Ms Cheney announced her father's voting intention, Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung said: "Who is Liz Cheney?"

The campaign confirmed Mr Cheung was being sarcastic by also pointing to a comment Ms Cheney posted online four years ago in which she called Ms Harris a "radical liberal".

Mr Cheney, who served as vice president under Republican President George W Bush from 2001 to 2009, has made few if any public appearances over the past year or more.

He has dealt with heart issues since his 40s and underwent a heart transplant in 2012.

His statement on Friday was similar to a 2022 campaign ad for his daughter as she sought a fourth term as Wyoming's lone congressperson.

In reference to the 6 January Capitol riots in 2021, he called Mr Trump a "coward" for trying to "steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him".

The ad did little good for his daughter in a deep-red state that once held the Cheney family dear but is now thoroughly in Mr Trump's corner.

Mr Cheney has been friends with Democrats over the years, but never supported one for president.

Both Cheneys backed Mr Trump during his successful 2016 presidential bid.

However, their support for him waned with Ms Cheney criticising Mr Trump's foreign policy decisions while he was in office.

She later criticised him over the 6 January Capitol riots.

Meanwhile, while in office, Mr Trump had criticised the "endless wars" in Afghanistan and Iraq launched when Mr Cheney was vice president.

If either Cheney supported Mr Trump in 2020, they were quiet about it.

Several other top Republicans have also come out in support of Ms Harris ahead of this year's election while some, including Senator Mitt Romney and former vice president Mike Pence , say they will not be voting for Mr Trump.

Of them, only Mr Romney, who is not seeking re-election, is still in office.

The titans of finance who gathered on Thursday at the Economic Club of New York may have hoped to hear how former President Donald J. Trump would take the nation into the era of artificial intelligence, private space travel and self-driving electric cars.

Instead, they were treated to an extended discourse on the glories of William McKinley and the power of tariffs to cure all that ails what Mr. Trump called a nation nearing economic collapse. Rather than new policies for the 21st century, the former president often harked back to the end of another century, the 19th.

“In the words of a great but highly underrated president, William McKinley, highly underrated, the protective tariff policy of the Republicans has been made — and made — the lives of our countrymen sweeter and brighter,” he said on Thursday during a rambling speech billed as a major economic address.

Mr. Trump seemed aware that his prescriptions for import tariffs on every product made abroad and a preferential 15 percent corporate tax rate for domestic manufacturers might not resonate in the high temple of global finance.

“You can call it what you want; some might say it’s economic nationalism,” he said after name-checking some of Wall Street’s richest men, such as Stephen A. Schwarzman, the chief executive of the Blackstone Group, Jamie Dimon, the chief executive of JPMorgan Chase, and John Paulson, the famed hedge fund manager. “I call it common sense. I call it America First. This is the policy that built this country, and this is the policy that will save our country.”

His solution for the deficit? Tariffs. The crisis for middle-class families struggling with child care? The economic growth he said would be spurred by things like tariffs. A complicated international supply chain that has the wings of military aircraft manufactured in one country and the tail in another? Tariffs.
