Short Essay On Facebook

Facebook is a social networking platform that was founded in 2004 and has since become one of the largest and most influential technology companies in the world. With over 2.7 billion monthly active users, Facebook has had a profound impact on how people communicate and share information with each other.

One of the main advantages of Facebook is the ease with which it allows people to connect and stay in touch with friends and family. People can share photos, videos, and updates about their lives with just a few clicks, making it easier to stay connected even when they are physically far apart. This has also made it easier for people to reconnect with old friends and build new relationships.

Another benefit of Facebook is the way it allows people to access and share information. With billions of users sharing news, articles, and other content, Facebook has become a major source of information for many people. However, this has also raised concerns about the accuracy and reliability of the information being shared on the platform, and has led to discussions about the role of social media in spreading misinformation and propaganda.

In addition to its impact on communication and information, Facebook has also had a significant impact on businesses and marketing. With its vast user base, Facebook has become an important platform for companies to reach potential customers and promote their products and services. This has led to the growth of online advertising and the creation of new business models based on digital marketing.

However, Facebook has also been criticized for its impact on privacy and personal data. With so much information being shared on the platform, there are concerns about who has access to this data and how it is being used. This has led to calls for increased regulation of social media companies and the protection of user privacy.

In conclusion, Facebook is a social networking platform that has had a profound impact on how people communicate and share information with each other. While it has many benefits, such as making it easier to connect with friends and access information, it has also raised concerns about privacy and the spread of misinformation. Whether Facebook is a force for good or evil is a matter of ongoing debate, but there is no denying the profound impact it has had on our world.

How Facebook is Changing Society

It is no secret that Facebook is one of the most popular social networking platforms on the internet. With over 2 billion active users, it is safe to say that Facebook has had a profound impact on society. Here are some ways that Facebook is changing society:

1. People are spending more time online

Due to the popularity of Facebook, people are spending more time online than ever before. A recent study found that the average person spends over 50 minutes per day on Facebook. This is a significant increase from the 38 minutes per day that was reported in 2014. This trend is likely to continue as Facebook continues to add new features and become more engaging.

2. People are sharing more personal information

Another way that Facebook is changing society is by causing people to share more personal information than ever before. Due to the platform’s popularity, many people feel comfortable sharing details about their lives with their friends on Facebook. This includes everything from relationship status updates to photos from vacation. While some may see this as a good thing, others worry that too much personal information being shared online could lead to identity theft or other problems down the road.

3. More businesses are using Facebook

Due to the large number of people using Facebook, more businesses are starting to use the platform to reach out to potential customers. Businesses can create pages on Facebook and use targeted ads to reach people who are interested in what they have to offer. This can be a great way for businesses to reach people who may not have heard of them before.

4. People are getting their news from Facebook

Another way that Facebook is changing society is by becoming a source for people to get their news. Many people use their news feed to find out what’s happening in the world around them. This can be a good thing as long as the news they are reading is accurate and from reliable sources, but it can also be dangerous if people are only getting their news from unreliable sources.

It is clear that Facebook has had a profound impact on society and will continue to do so for years to come. While some of these changes may be positive, it is important to remember that there can also be negative consequences of using the platform too much.

Pros and Cons of Using Facebook

There are both good and bad aspects to using Facebook. On the plus side, it allows you to keep in touch with friends and family all over the world easily and for free. You can also join groups with like-minded people, stay up-to-date on current events, and learn about new products or services.

However, there are also some downfalls to using Facebook. For example, it can be addictive and time-consuming, lead to cyber bullying or other negative social interactions, and allow companies to collect data about users. Overall, whether or not Facebook is a positive or negative addition to your life depends on how you use it.

Impact on Education and Social Life

The social networking site Facebook has had a major impact on society and the education system. The site has allowed communication between friends and family to be much easier and quicker. It has also allowed people to connect with others who have similar interests. The site has also had an impact on the way that people learn about the world around them. Facebook has allowed people to share information and news much more easily than before. This has led to people being better informed about what is happening in the world around them.

Facebook Pages are free to create, and they provide businesses with a wealth of features to take advantage of, such as the ability to post photos, videos, and updates about your products or services. For example, you can use Facebook Ads to target users who have expressed interest in similar products or services in the past. Or, you can run a contest or giveaway on your Page that requires users to submit their contact information .

Concerns About Privacy & Security on Facebook

Facebook has been in the news a lot lately for privacy concerns. Many users are concerned about how their personal information is being used, and whether or not their data is secure.

Facebook has been accused of mishandling user data in the past, and there have been a number of high-profile security breaches. As a result, many users are worried about what will happen to their personal information if they use Facebook.

Privacy concerns are especially relevant when it comes to Facebook because the platform collects a lot of data about its users. This includes information about your interests, your friends, and your activity on the site.

All of this data can be used to target ads and content at you, and it can also be shared with third-party applications. This means that your personal information could be seen by people who you don’t know, and who you may not want to see it.

Security concerns are also a major issue for Facebook users. There have been a number of reports of people having their accounts hacked, or of malware being spread through the site. This can lead to sensitive information like your credit card details or home address being compromised.

Facebook has taken steps to improve its privacy and security features in recent years, but many users remain concerned about how their data is being used. If you’re worried about your privacy on Facebook, there are a few things you can do to protect yourself.

In conclusion, Facebook has its pros and cons. On the one hand, it can be a great way to connect with friends and family, share photos, and stay informed about current events. However, it can also lead to addiction and cyberbullying if used unwisely. As such, it is important for users to use caution when using this social media platform by limiting their time on it and monitoring what they post. With a healthy balance of usage in our lives, Facebook can continue to be an effective way for us all to communicate online.

500 Words Long Essay on Facebook

Facebook is a social media platform that has revolutionized the way people connect and interact with each other. With over 2.85 billion monthly active users, it has become the most popular social networking site in the world. In this essay, I will discuss the various aspects of Facebook, including its impact on communication, privacy concerns, addiction, and social activism.

Firstly, Facebook has greatly improved communication by providing a platform for people to connect and share information instantly. Through features such as posting status updates, sharing photos and videos, and sending private messages, users can easily stay in touch with friends and family, regardless of their physical location. Facebook has made it possible to reconnect with long-lost friends and foster new relationships, all within the virtual realm.

However, along with the benefits of communication, Facebook also brings about privacy concerns. The vast amount of personal information shared willingly by users makes them vulnerable to security threats and identity theft. Moreover, the constant tracking and data collection carried out by Facebook raises concerns about the misuse and exploitation of personal data. It is crucial for users to be cautious about the information they share and be aware of the privacy settings provided by Facebook to protect their personal data.

Another aspect of Facebook that has gained attention is addiction. The addictive nature of social media platforms, including Facebook, has been widely researched and debated. The constant need for likes, comments, and validation fuels a cycle of gratification that can lead to excessive use and detachment from the offline world. The constant scrolling and engagement with virtual content can result in reduced productivity, anxiety, and social isolation. It is essential for users to maintain a healthy balance between their online and offline lives to prevent addiction and its negative consequences.

Lastly, Facebook has become a powerful tool for social activism and raising awareness on various issues. The ease of sharing information and organizing events has enabled activists to reach larger audiences and mobilize support for their causes. From political campaigns to fundraising for charitable organizations, Facebook has provided a platform for individuals to engage in meaningful dialogue and create social change.

In conclusion, Facebook has revolutionized communication and connected people like never before. However, it is important to navigate its usage responsibly and consider the privacy concerns and addiction risks. With its immense reach, Facebook can also be leveraged for social activism and bringing about positive change. As we continue to navigate the digital world, it is crucial to be mindful of the impact that platforms like Facebook have on our lives and society as a whole.

Introduction

Pestel analysis, tows analysis, conclusions.

Facebook Corporation was established by the current chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. In its inception days, the Facebook Corporation membership was limited to Harvard students though it was later expanded to other institutions in the city of Boston (Veer, 2011, p.271). The company operates as a social networking site connecting users with friends who work, live and study around them.

People use Facebook to keep up with others, upload photos, share videos and links as well as understand the situation about people they meet. Of all social networking sites Facebook has the widest regional coverage with over 700 million active users (Facebook Inc, 2011, p.36).

Since the establishment of Facebook Inc, the company has been facing legal proceeding in regard to the use of the social networking idea. The company has been accused of interfering with the privacy of the users.

This resulted in declining traffic in key markets until the company introduced powerful controls for sharing personal information. Although they claim to reinforce the law on users, case of hacking confidential information still affect the company’s business (Facebook, 2009, pp.1-11).

Another political factor could be the copyright policies. Considering the scattered nature of Facebook users, most of them are not aware of these policies and end up violating them. The social network site is also affected by bans in certain countries. For instance, the company had been banned operating in China since 2009 (Facebook, 2011, p.36).

Children welfare associations affect the company as a result of exposing detrimental materials to children. Indeed, the office of the New York Attorney General stepped up warnings against the company saying that Facebook might face a consumer fraud indict for misrepresenting how the site is safe for children.

The growing of Asian and Latin America economies is an economic factor that has the highest leverage on the business. In fact, the company fiscal 2011 plan is to expand to the Asian countries such as China.

The company plans to launch in China and abide by the laws of the corporation by partnering with the Chinese search engine Baidu. These growing economies increase the income of the people and are able to access computers more. The rising literacy level especially in the developing nations is a factor influencing the business.

The number of people who can use computers effectively is growing dramatically. For example, statistics indicate that 60% of the Indians are computer literate and 90% of them have daily access to the computer. This is the very reason why India has the highest number of people socializing through Facebook and other social sites. The other economic factor is employment which is associated with internet accessibility.

People working tend to have ample access to computers and are able to socialize more through the social sites. Facebook is ranked at the top when considering the preference of the working community to social networking sites.

Like other internet sites, age demographic is the major influencing factor of Facebook business (Taylor et al., 2003, p.237). Youths tend to be the major users of the site when connecting with their peers.

The minors are increasingly using Facebook to socialize posing risks to the business. In reality, the company has not devised effective measure to filter underage uses out of the site. Religion is also a factor that is affecting the company’s business especially in the Arab countries.

Facebook has been unable to penetrate many of the Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan due to religion restrictions. In addition to these, gender and marital status could leverage the networking business.

Males have been the dominant users of the social networking sites though females have picked the same pace. Unmarried individuals tend to use Facebook more than married individuals perhaps due to time limitations or benefits sort.

Technological factors affecting Facebook business include mobile growth. Nearly 35% of the total Facebookers access the social site from a mobile device. This trend has even moved the mobile market for products like Apple’s iPad and iPhone.

New software technologies have enabled the company to add new features on their site which are attracting more consumers (Kwon, 2010, p.257). In terms of these features, the chat option is the biggest attraction to the site followed by the sharing option.

Advancement in space technology is also expanding the market for the business. Many remote areas have accessibility to information technology through the use of space equipment. Furthermore, connectivity speed has improved very much and people can socialize fast and effectively.

Some new technologies such as third-party medial plug-ins have expanded the use of Facebook credits thus enhancing e-commerce. Besides, technology allows for business transactions to be conducted through Facebook site and therefore attract a new segment of consumers. Undeniably, technological advancement is the key enabler of Facebook business.

Weaknesses and threats (WT)

A company with great weaknesses has to route to a survival strategy (Stokes & Wilson, 2010, p.225). Facebook should consider the option of joint operation with Baidu and other search engines in difficult markets. Another alternative would be to withdraw from the challenging markets altogether.

But, the challenges of the company must not have to route to a survival strategy due to the company’s strengths. Consequently, better strategy would be to attempt to develop weaknesses into strengths.

Weaknesses and opportunities (WO)

The rising internet usage has resulted in using more the social network sites. Yet Facebook essentially follows a one-model policy which presents a problem if other designs of site features become obsolete. The company has to introduce new features to reach a wider spectrum of users. This will allow using the same site for a range of needs ranging from business to dating.

Strengths and threats (ST)

One of the biggest threats to Facebook is the customer privacy issues. There has been continued criticism that the company does not offer the standard confidentiality demanded in a social networking environment.

The company should reduce such issues using the many applications available that can ensure maximum confidentiality. Another strategy for avoiding competitive pressure is to differentiate the site through easy user interface.

Strengths and opportunities (SO)

Generally, Facebook can build on their strengths by taking the advantage of the opportunities. The company’s strength in global coverage and popularity becomes evident. This strength can enable the company to develop a consumer relationship that attracts regulatory restricted environments.

Eventually, the strength will enable the company to open operation in China and Arab countries. Thus Facebook can benefit from considerable concessions offered by the governments to attract the company.

Facebook Company is certainly operating in a tricky environment due to the changing nature of communication and networking environment. The environment is tricky because there in increasing preference for social networks yet the technology responsible cannot meet the intrinsic demand of the consumers. Policies regulating social medial works have requirements beyond the ability of technology.

This attracts other groups of interests while regulations in some countries cannot be fully satisfied. However, the growing economy and advancement in technology promise a brighter future for the company.

If Facebook can exploit the opportunity of rising usage of the internet through its global coverage, there is a chance of attracting policy makers in other countries and maybe adjust regulations. There is a chance to develop the weaknesses into new strengths once the company is better positioned in the market.

Since the market of social media environment is quite demanding, Facebook must focus on its core resources and competencies. In this case, integration of features and ease of use are distinctive resources that can enable effective differentiation in the competition.

When combined with the threshold resource of regional coverage, the competencies can leverage the brand name in the face of consumers as well as policy makers. It is therefore recommended that the company should:

  • Use the status updates to provide targeted adverts
  • Focus on monetization to improve valuations
  • Provide local advertising based on customer location
  • Enable controlled application
  • Improve in storage and archival
  • Engage in mergers with search engines
  • Solve the problem of privacy

Choosing the Right Topic for Your Essay

Choosing the Right Topic for Your Essay

One of the most crucial steps in writing a successful essay is selecting the right topic. The topic you choose will determine the direction and focus of your writing, so it’s important to choose wisely. Here are some tips to help you select the perfect topic for your essay:

Choose a topic that you are passionate about or interested in. Writing about something you enjoy will make the process more enjoyable and your enthusiasm will come through in your writing.
Do some preliminary research to see what topics are available and what resources are out there. This will help you narrow down your choices and find a topic that is both interesting and manageable.
Think about who will be reading your essay and choose a topic that will resonate with them. Consider their interests, knowledge level, and any biases they may have when selecting a topic.
Take some time to brainstorm different topic ideas. Write down all the potential topics that come to mind, and then evaluate each one based on relevance, interest, and feasibility.
Try to choose a topic that offers a unique perspective or angle. Avoid overly broad topics that have been extensively covered unless you have a fresh take to offer.

By following these tips and considering your interests, audience, and research, you can choose a topic that will inspire you to write an engaging and compelling essay.

Research and Gathering Information

When writing an essay, conducting thorough research and gathering relevant information is crucial. Here are some tips to help you with your research:

Make sure to use reliable sources such as academic journals, books, and reputable websites. Avoid using sources that are not credible or biased.
As you research, take notes on important information that you can use in your essay. Organize your notes so that you can easily reference them later.
Don’t rely solely on one type of source. Utilize a variety of sources to provide a well-rounded perspective on your topic.
Before using a source in your essay, make sure to evaluate its credibility and relevance to your topic. Consider the author’s credentials, publication date, and biases.
Make sure to keep a record of the sources you use in your research. This will help you properly cite them in your essay and avoid plagiarism.

Crafting a Compelling Thesis Statement

When writing an essay, one of the most crucial elements is the thesis statement. This statement serves as the main point of your essay, summarizing the argument or position you will be taking. Crafting a compelling thesis statement is essential for a strong and cohesive essay. Here are some tips to help you create an effective thesis statement:

  • Be specific: Your thesis statement should clearly state the main idea of your essay. Avoid vague or general statements.
  • Make it arguable: A strong thesis statement is debatable and presents a clear position that can be supported with evidence.
  • Avoid clichés: Stay away from overused phrases or clichés in your thesis statement. Instead, strive for originality and clarity.
  • Keep it concise: Your thesis statement should be concise and to the point. Avoid unnecessary words or phrases.
  • Take a stand: Your thesis statement should express a clear stance on the topic. Don’t be afraid to assert your position.

By following these guidelines, you can craft a compelling thesis statement that sets the tone for your essay and guides your reader through your argument.

Writing the Body of Your Essay

Once you have your introduction in place, it’s time to dive into the body of your essay. The body paragraphs are where you will present your main arguments or points to support your thesis statement.

Here are some tips for writing the body of your essay:

  • Stick to One Main Idea: Each paragraph should focus on one main idea or argument. This will help keep your essay organized and easy to follow.
  • Use Topic Sentences: Start each paragraph with a topic sentence that introduces the main idea of the paragraph.
  • Provide Evidence: Support your main points with evidence such as facts, statistics, examples, or quotes from experts.
  • Explain Your Points: Don’t just state your points; also explain how they support your thesis and why they are important.
  • Use Transition Words: Use transition words and phrases to connect your ideas and create a smooth flow between paragraphs.

Remember to refer back to your thesis statement and make sure that each paragraph contributes to your overall argument. The body of your essay is where you can really showcase your critical thinking and analytical skills, so take the time to craft well-developed and coherent paragraphs.

  • Focus on Structure: Check the overall structure of your essay, including the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Make sure your ideas flow logically and cohesively.

I Used a Bullet Vending Machine. It Taught Me Something Grim About America.

I’m 22 years old. i’ve never had gun training. but one sunday morning, i bought ammo from a vending machine..

A large wooden cross edged with a string of Christmas lights stands proudly on the clean-cut lawn of a Noble, Oklahoma, home.

Surrounding houses are similar: Metal and glass crosses decorate gardens and hang from porches next to twinkling wind chimes; you’d be hard-pressed to find a home without an American flag waving out front, too.

It’s the definitive rural American city. Noble is deep in the Bible Belt and home to about 7,700 people; its residents are statistically more likely to be Republican, attend church, and own a gun .

So it’s fitting that this city was one of the first to see the installation of a one-of-a-kind gun ammunition vending machine in its local grocery store. The machines, sold by a company called American Rounds , sell ammo for handguns, rifles, and shotguns, and use artificial intelligence technology to verify the identity and age of each customer.

Just seven miles south of Norman—one of Oklahoma’s largest and most liberal cities (relatively)—the Noble Super C Mart is one of four stores in the state to have the 2,000-pound machine plopped down inside its entrance. Alabama and neighboring Texas also have the machines—and American Rounds CEO Grant Magers told me this is just the beginning.

Immediately upon their installation, people from either side of the Second Amendment debate voiced their appreciation or skepticism for the bullets-made-convenient hunk of metal. And not just in the states where the machines are located.

The New York Times , CNN , USA Today , and NPR were all quick to report on the ammo machines, highlighting widespread concerns for safety and regulation. And if you scroll the Facebook comment section of just about any article on American Rounds, you’ll find a flood of polarizing opinions.

“Well this is a step in the wrong direction,” one user wrote under a Facebook post from Oklahoma broadcast station KOCO.

“WTF are these guys thinking?” My thoughts exactly, at first.

And perhaps most revealingly: “Hell yeah that’s the most American thing I’ve seen and I love it.”

I decided to see what all the fuss was about.

My relationship with guns is a complex one. Living in Oklahoma, I’m used to seeing crossed-gun Second Amendment bumper stickers on the backs of trucks and gun holsters displayed proudly on people’s waists. I have family members who are in the military and law enforcement—I was taught to respect guns, not to fear them.

But here’s the thing: I do fear them. How could I not when there have been over 300 mass shootings across the country just this year? So I didn’t know what to expect—or how I would feel—when I drove to a grocery store in Noble to visit one of the ammo machines.

The machines, as many familiar with the ammunition-buying world were quick to point out, aren’t all that different from other ammo purchasing methods. In fact, in some ways, it’s more regulated. The A.I. scans your face and compares the image to your ID to verify its validity and your age, similar to what you see in an airport. Magers, the CEO, said it can detect a fake ID or if a person is using an ID that isn’t theirs. Federal law prohibits dealers from selling handgun ammunition to anyone under 21 and long gun ammunition to anyone under 18, so the company set an across-the-board 21-year age requirement.

Magers told me American Rounds doesn’t store customer information, but some people are still concerned. Face-scanning technology, such as the kind American Rounds’ machines use, is one way companies can gather biometric data, or data that identifies a person’s physical or behavioral characteristics. Theoretically, this information could be used by companies or agencies to track who is purchasing ammunition to develop marketing or political campaigns targeted to those demographics. There’s no comprehensive federal law regulating the use and distribution of biometric data, though some states have passed measures to protect the privacy of individuals.

“We are the only company in America that requires an identification check at every single transaction,” Magers said. With brick-and-mortar and online ammunition sales, there’s no guarantee IDs are always checked or verified, he argued. The heavy and double-walled steel structure of the machine is also less likely to be pilfered from than stores with ammunition sitting on an open shelf. There’s no cap on how much ammunition a single customer can purchase, though the amount is limited by the machine’s capacity.

Many people were understandably concerned by the machine’s 24/7 accessibility, which was advertised on the American Rounds website under the banner “Convenience.” But after a conversation with Magers in which he told me: “We’re not available 24/7,” I read from his company’s website where it said exactly that. It turns out that was a marketing error and the machines are not, in fact, available 24/7. Instead, they’re only accessible during the operating hours of the stores where they are located (they are indoors and typically monitored by cameras). The website has since been updated.

Logistical concerns regarding the machines aside, the concept itself is inherently divisive—for obvious reasons. Gun advocates have long argued that ammunition should be more easily purchased and accessible, while gun safety advocates push for the exact opposite.

“It’s either, ‘That’s pointless, why are we doing this?’ or ‘That’s cool.’ There’s really nothing in between,” Joshua Harris-Till, the communications lead for the Oklahoma chapter of the gun regulation advocacy group Moms Demand Action, told me about the machines. When American Rounds first made headlines, I’d say I fell into the former category.

David Yamane, a professor of sociology at Wake Forest University and an expert on guns in America, told me that any time something regarding guns moves into the fore—like, say, an A.I.-powered bullet vending machine—it just adds fuel to the fire.

The vending machines “are like this Rorschach test,” Yamane said. “You put that in front of people and [their] responses tell you everything about how they view guns generally.”

However, the issue isn’t clean-cut even amongst the staunchest gun supporters. Don Spencer, president of the Oklahoma Second Amendment Association, was initially enticed by the convenience of an ammunition vending machine. Then he thought twice.

“This is a trap,” he told me. “It is a registration for the government to find out who is purchasing what, and it’s not government business if a peaceful citizen is purchasing ammunition.”

When told that the company promises never to store customer information, Spencer was skeptical. “I don’t trust it,” he said. “Who can you trust?”

Spencer said he’s talked to several firearm owners who echoed his concerns for privacy regarding the machines. His opinion is that there should not be government regulation of legal firearm and ammunition purchases, nor should there be an age restriction for buying bullets. However, he conceded that the vending machine would be a fallback for him; something to use when he’s in a pinch and alternative purchasing options are not available.

As in Texas and Alabama, Oklahoma is a deep-red state full of Second Amendment supporters. In 2021, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt even approved a measure declaring Oklahoma to be a Second Amendment Sanctuary State, which essentially means certain federal gun regulations will be considered an infringement on the rights of citizens.

A 2023 Pew Research survey found Republicans are more than twice as likely as Democrats to personally own a gun; 47 percent of adults living in rural areas report owning a firearm as well, compared to just 20 percent in urban areas.

Harris-Till thinks the presence of ammunition machines in grocery stores exemplifies the pervasiveness of guns in America and the need for stricter regulations. After all, he said, “What situation are you in where you’re like, ‘Oh, I need to get eggs and I need to get ammo?’ ”

American Rounds has plans to expand, with more than 200 stores already contracted to host the machines, Magers said. However, as Yamane pointed out, it’s likely the novelty will wear off and the machines will fade into the plane of near-obscurity alongside ATMs and Amazon Prime deliveries. It will become a new normal—and perhaps that’s the whole point.

“When people got off the boats back in the 17 th century, they were carrying firearms,” Yamane said. “Firearms have always been a part of American culture.”

The Noble Super C Mart is unassuming. The white-brick building sits next to a hardware store and is only a five-minute walk from the Roserock Baptist Church. Outside, the sign reads, “Super C Mart, a hometown tradition.” Bibles and bullets, it seems, are at the heart of that tradition.

The American Rounds vending machine is located at the store’s entrance beside the checkout counters. Next to it is a line of miniature carts made for children to push around the store.

It took less than two minutes for me to hold bullets in my hand—a pack of 12-gauge rifle slugs for $7.50. Four steps to purchase and around six taps of the screen. When prompted, I inserted my driver’s license into the machine and looked up for the camera to scan my face.

The machine told me to smile to complete the ID verification, which felt really odd when buying ammunition. I also had to stand on my tippy-toes for my face to reach the scanner on the screen. (I’m 5-foot-7, for reference.)

Once my ID and age were verified, the box of ammo dropped into a small compartment that I could open near the bottom of the machine. I admit I grabbed the box as quickly as I could and got the hell out of there. It’s not that I was afraid of the machine or bullets, but how I may be perceived for buying them.

I grew up with guns. Not in my hand or openly in my home—but in the media. In the minutes that passed on the classroom clock while I waited for the “all clear” to sound through the overhead speakers. In the tears I cried for people I’d never met but who were tragically lost.

I know these machines likely won’t lead to more violence. In fact, if brick-and-mortar and online ammunition purchases (where age and ID checks aren’t a guarantee) were replaced with these machines, violence may even be reduced. But, as Yamane told me, sometimes it’s not about the gun (or the machine) itself, but what it represents.

To me, these machines are yet another reminder of how normalized guns are in America. I’m not against the Second Amendment. I understand there is a time and place where guns are necessary. But I’m also part of the generation asking desperately for stricter regulations so maybe, just maybe, we won’t have to run, hide, fight anymore.

I’m 22 years old. I’ve never had gun training. But on that Sunday morning, I held bullets in my hand. Bullets I bought from a grocery-store vending machine. Later, I left the store with a box of bullets and a bag of egg noodles (might as well cross that off my list while I was there, right?). As I walked through the parking lot to my car, I couldn’t suppress the feeling that I had just evaded some incredibly faulty security measures, because surely it can’t be that easy to buy bullets?

But it was. So very easy.

The box now sits on a shelf at the back of my bedroom closet. I’ll probably never touch it again, but I’ll remember it’s there—a reminder of the inseparable nature of the land of the free and a gun.

‘Rest easy in this beautiful place, my love’: Widow scatters husband’s ashes into Moab canyon before jump

By Shanti Lerner

MOAB, Utah ( KSTU ) — When Shannon Lloyd lost her husband Steven in a 2020 motorcycle accident, she never thought she would live life to the fullest again — that is, until she found herself on the edge of a Moab cliff this summer.

For her 52nd birthday, Lloyd traveled from her Tennessee residence for a weeklong journey to see the red rocks and national parks of Utah. Exploring the beauty of the Southwest had been on her vision board, and the trip was a long time coming.

“After widowhood, I found myself isolating, and that’s not healthy,” she said. “So I just wanted to live for him and enjoy life again. Do something adventurous, because I missed our adventures together.”

Lloyd’s solo trip took an adventurous turn when she found a video from Tandem BASE Moab, a local Moab business, on social media. The video inspired her to challenge herself and share the experience with her late soulmate.

“Not long before [Steven] passed away, he bought a map, and he wanted to frame that map and pin all the places that he had been,” Lloyd said. “Well, after he passed away, I got it framed, and I started putting pins in it.

“…Everywhere I’ve gone, that he had never gone, I have spread his ashes and put a little gold pin in that map for him, and I have green pins from where I have been. And so when I was going to Utah, he had never been to Utah, and I thought, ‘Well, what better place to do it than during a BASE jump?'”

And that’s what she did.

On July 29, seconds before she jumped into Moab’s Mineral Bottom Canyon, Lloyd spread some of her husband’s ashes shouting the following words into the canyon below.

“Steven, I miss our adventures. I’m learning to find my own. Thank you for all your provisions and the character I see in my children, and all the love that you shared with me and the memories,” she said before taking the leap of faith. “Rest easy in this beautiful place, my love. Meet me at the gate.”

For Matt LaJeunesse, owner of Tandem BASE Moab, Lloyd’s courage was something he had never witnessed before.

“I’ve been jumping long enough that I’ve seen a lot of people show up here to Moab to make a BASE jump, and they have this hero script where they think they’re going to get out there and sound profound and motivational and be the next viral thing,” LeJeunesse said. “And they get to the edge, and they can’t even answer, ‘What is your name? Where are you from?’

“And then when Shannon started speaking, and words just started flowing out of her, I was in disbelief.”

LaJeunesse commended Lloyd’s awareness.

“I’ve never seen anything like the way Shannon had memorialized her husband, and I thought it was really an incredible reflection of her that she opted to do it on the cliff edge, not during the jump,” LeJeunesse said.

Lloyd said scattering her husband’s ashes before the jump was intentional. She wanted to be present as she floated away from the edge of the cliff and take in the views of the red rocks that drew her to Utah.

“I’m not a daredevil … but as the parachute came out and I opened my eyes, I just felt light free, like I was flying, like I was meant to be there,” she recalled. “It’s been four-and-a-half years and it’s still heavy, but I needed to lighten that load, and I just wanted him to know that I’m going to live and I’m going to enjoy it because he loved life, he loved people.”

a bowl of cavatappi al sugo superimposed with the ronzoni box over a recipe card. photo illustration.

Putting together a lazy, carb-laden meal on a Sunday evening is my modus operandi. Sometimes it’s a grilled cheese sandwich stuffed with pickled jalapenos; other times I go the shrimp and instant grits route. Some nights all I can muster is a pile of buttered Pop-Tarts. But nothing is as solid a play as pasta. This tried-and-true starch-plus-sauce combination works like a charm to calm the often woeful vibes of a Sunday night, and also checks all the boxes for simplicity, affordability, and unbeatable versatility.

Lately, my Sunday dinner of choice has come from the cavatappi al sugo recipe found on the back of Ronzoni’s cavatappi box. Translated as cavatappi with sauce, it’s a reminder that magic can be made in the kitchen in a surprisingly short time.

The ingredients can be easily found in your pantry or the forgotten corners of the crisper drawer. Carrots, onions, and celery create the sauce’s flavor base — and if you’re out of the fresh stuff you can easily substitute a canned or frozen vegetable medley. Canned tomatoes are a must-have, and while the recipe calls for the crushed variety, I’ve used diced, pureed, and whole peeled with similar success. Ground beef is also essential, along with garlic and basic seasonings. It is important to note that I incorporate three times the amount of garlic that’s called for; the intense aroma helps me feel like I’m doing something gourmet, and more than that, I’m just a garlic person.

The first step is adding the mirepoix mixture and garlic to a well-oiled skillet and cooking it for at least five minutes. While the vegetables soften, there is an abundance of room for creativity. If your spice rack is scant, keep it straightforward with just oregano. But if inspiration calls, add thyme, basil, or red pepper flakes for a more sophisticated finish. Whichever path you choose, incorporate the beef and tomatoes after the vegetables and aromatics become tender. If you’re like me and you enjoy a bottle of red as the weekend comes to a close, feel free to pour ⅓ to ½ cup of the wine into the sauce at this point — I’m partial to a cheap but substantial cabernet sauvignon or spicy zinfandel. Fifteen minutes of necessary simmering time is the perfect opportunity to turn your attention to boiling noodles and setting them aside.

Cavatappi’s short corkscrew shape is both visually appealing and efficient. The space in between twists perfectly captures sauce and its accompaniments. Imagine a mountain of springy pasta coated in a rich blanket of uber-savory tomatoes and succulent beef; that’s the fail-safe result that keeps me coming back. And the space for substitutions is endless — if you’re working with ground pork and a slightly different set of vegetables, you can still assemble a wonderful meal with a similar flavor profile. Someone new to Italian cuisine, or even cooking in general, can easily master the technique and branch out to their heart’s desire. I am personally loyal to cavatappi (also known as cellentani), but you could easily swap it for elbow macaroni or rigatoni in a pinch.

The finished sauce is the true star of the show; it clings to every crevice with its hearty, fragrant presence. Every time I make it, I get a cozy feeling that’s just enough to conquer the Sunday Scaries. When I want to beat my end-of-weekend dread, I can rely on a glass of wine and bowl of saucy pasta buried in Parmesan to do the trick.

The cheap, unprocessed longevity smoothie a Blue Zone nutrition expert makes every morning

  • Breakfast smoothies are a hit with many longevity experts.
  • A Blue Zone doctor shared one of the simplest recipes: a blend of leftover fruit and nuts.
  • His technique takes minutes and doesn't involve any expensive powders or green drinks.

Insider Today

Dr. Joan Sabaté views breakfast as a daily opportunity to fuel up on some of the most important nutrient-dense food groups that support healthy longevity. His strategy is cheap, too.

Sabaté, a healthy-eating expert who was on the advisory committee that helped develop the US federal dietary guidelines for 2020-2025, said that a healthy breakfast doesn't have to be time-consuming or expensive. He lives in Loma Linda, California, the only longevity Blue Zone in the country , where local regulations have limited the sale of alcohol and slowed the rise of fast-food restaurants. Sabaté is also a practicing Seventh-day Adventist, a religion that prioritizes healthy eating habits and encourages its members to adopt plant-based diets.

Sabaté and his wife of 45 years have developed a trick for making effortless, nutrient-dense breakfast smoothies. His "fruit shake," as he calls it, involves a few leftovers, protein, and healthy fats that keep him going for hours.

"What we have is basically a simple meal," Sabaté, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Loma Linda University School of Public Health, told Business Insider. "It is not sophisticated — we don't eat ultra-processed foods ."

A blender full of fruit and nuts is his longevity recipe

Sabaté's fruit-shake recipe fluctuates depending on the season and what's available at his local markets . But it always involves two core ingredients: leftover fruit (especially the overripe stuff that's about to go bad) and two heaping handfuls of nuts.

He usually chooses walnuts, a favorite of many longevity experts because they're rich in fatty acids, which are good for your brain and heart. He also tends to include a little bit of fresh-squeezed orange juice to get the mixture just right.

"That's a quick way to eat a lot of fruit, and maybe two servings of nuts," he said. Throughout the day, he rounds out his diet with vegetables, whole grains, and legumes like beans, which are another Blue Zone staple .

Sabaté knows science backs up his strategy. He has pioneered decades of clinical research demonstrating how nuts can improve heart health , and he's researching how nuts may also ease other chronic issues, including the inflammation and cognitive decline that often come with aging.

And he says fruits are nutritional powerhouses that can support healthy aging. Studies suggest that regularly eating berries may even help combat cognitive decline. The benefits of these foods go beyond what's listed on a back-of-the-box nutrition panel and can't be divided up neatly into the three basic macronutrient categories of carbs, protein, and fat.

"We don't eat macronutrients," he said. "We eat foods, and the foods carry with them many other nutrients."

Related stories

Nuts contain lots of healthy monounsaturated fat, plus a good dose of protein.

"Besides that, they have minerals, they have vitamins, and they have phytochemicals ," he said.

Nuts are nature's protein powder

To keep things interesting, Sabaté's wife likes to top off their smoothies with a sprinkle of crunchy cacao nibs for added texture and flavor.

Sometimes he'll add a dollop of yogurt for a calcium bonus, but he never boosts his smoothies with protein powders, supplements , or vitamin mixes. He's confident he can get what he needs from eating whole foods rich in protein and filled with fiber and other health-enhancing properties.

"We don't use soy protein or any of these foods that are already powder," he said. "Just nuts as nature has created it and fruit."

OPINION: Alaska’s misguided bear control continues

easy essay on facebook

A brown bear fishes for salmon in Pick Creek near Lake Nerka in Wood-Tikchik State Park on Thursday, July 21, 2022. (Loren Holmes / ADN)

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) recently finished up the second year of an effort to kill as many bears as they can in a remote part of Alaska, intending to improve calf survival of caribou in the Multchatna caribou herd. This year’s total was 81 brown bears and 14 wolves. Maybe you heard about last year’s predator control effort, which killed 99 bears (94 brown bears and five black bears) and five wolves.

For context, the Mulchatna caribou herd erupted from 12,000 animals in the 1970s to more than 200,000 in the 1990s, then declined to the current population of roughly 12,000. A “normal” population of caribou should have started to increase by this point. In situations where populations remain below objectives (an arbitrary number usually based on historic high population estimates, but that’s another story), the ADFG has a legal option to conduct what is called “Intensive Management,“ also known as predator control. Predator control has been a longstanding tool used by the ADFG as a last-ditch effort (though more recently, it has become more of a primary effort) to increase populations of ungulates that remain below population objectives.

The current predator control effort began in 2011 when the Alaska Board of Game authorized a predator control program to reduce the wolf population on the calving grounds of the Mulchatna herd, which primarily occupies land in Alaska Game Management Unit 17. The herd was estimated to be approximately 24,000 at the time. From 2011 to 2021, volunteers were authorized to hunt wolves indiscriminately using airplanes and snowmachines. More than 140 wolves were ultimately killed as part of that effort, but the Mulchatna caribou herd continued to decline to its current population.

As a result, at the 2021 Alaska Board of Game meeting, one board member suggested that killing bears should be considered after hearing that bears were identified as the primary predators of Mulchatna caribou calves during a research update by the ADFG research staff. Not long after that suggestion was made, an amendment to the existing predator control program from 2011 was introduced, which included a provision that allowed bears to be killed by ADFG staff — including shooting them from aircraft. That amendment was quickly adopted.

The short time between the suggestion of killing bears by a board member and it being drafted into an amendment is unusual. Additionally, the addition of another species into an existing predator control program is unprecedented within the norms of Alaska Board of Game meetings, according to many familiar with the process. Even more odd was the speed at which ADFG created an operational plan and began carrying out the predator control of bears in GMU 17 (less than two years).

Beyond the procedural oddities, the current effort seems in direct opposition to the Alaska Constitution’s Article VIII, section 4, which states: “Fish, forests, wildlife, grasslands, and all other replenishable resources belonging to the State shall be utilized, developed, and maintained on the sustained yield principle, subject to preferences among beneficial uses.” The sustained yield principle in wildlife management is based on understanding how many animals a population can produce (for human consumption) without causing fundamental problems to a species population. The main conflict is that both brown bears and black bears are game species, and therefore are themselves covered under the sustained yield principle. Yet ADFG has never collected any population data on brown or black bears within GMU 17 or surrounding units, so how can they say that those populations are being managed under the sustained yield principle and not causing fundamental problems to those populations?

They can’t.

Though they’ve tried. Based on their operational plan for the amended Intensive Management plan, they used brown bear density estimates based on research conducted more than 20 years ago. Based on those studies, they estimated that 54-118 brown bears would be within the area identified for bear control within the amended predator control plan and based on “correspondence with pilots and biologists familiar with the area” that 5-15 brown bears would be removed.” Notably, no estimate was given for black bears. Yet, during the predator control effort in 2023, more than 94 brown bears were killed and 81 more were killed in 2024. Based on these numbers, we now know with certainty that the ADFG had no idea how many bears were within the predator control area or how many animals would be killed as part of the effort, and any estimates of bear populations within GMU 17 were little more than a poorly informed back-of-the-envelope calculation. This clearly demonstrates the lack of scientific rigor that exists within, particularly in Region 4, the agency that some previously considered to be one of the premier state wildlife agencies in the US.

Speaking of science, reading the operational plan shows that ADFG has not clearly defined criteria for evaluating the success of the effort other than vaguely referring to increasing calf survival. If increasing calf survival is the goal, then a parallel effort to monitor calf survival (by placing radio collars on calves and aerially monitoring their monthly survival) should be occurring at the same time as the bear control, yet this did not happen in 2023 and may be happening in 2024, according to the most recent report — though ADFG noted that the number of calves counted per cow last fall was double the recent average. The real test will be if any of those additional calves survived the winter and if they contribute to the overall population number, which will be estimated later this summer.

Importantly, a lack of appropriate data collection has been a regular feature of predator control efforts in Alaska, as noted by recent research and another amazing book (”Wolves, bears, and their prey in Alaska” by the National Research Council) based on another contentious predator control period in Alaska, which demonstrated that the state rarely collects the appropriate data (e.g. calf survival, etc.) to document the success of its predator control efforts. Further, an internal ADFG study in the form of a PowerPoint presentation (unpublished, like many “studies” conducted by the ADFG) evaluating the efficacy of state predator control efforts could find only a few “success” stories (defined only as population increases) out of 11 efforts evaluated. Again, this report stated that evaluating the efficacy of predator control efforts is hampered by insufficient data collection.

Another primary issue with the predator control being conducted is that it is unlikely to increase the population of Mulchatna caribou, as voiced by 34 retired Alaska biologists and scientists in an opinion piece published in the ADN in 2023.

It is widely observed that caribou populations have cyclic boom and bust periods, where populations increase exponentially and then decline precipitously for a period before increasing again. In general, it is understood that the “bust” portion of arctic caribou populations is primarily driven by food depletion — in particular, winter food sources such as lichen. In the context of climate change and the rapid changes expected in the Arctic, it is unknown how the regrowth of lichen will be affected. As a result, the typical boom and bust cycle may be changing and the bust portion of the cycle may be the new normal.

Importantly, the ADFG has never done any work on forage quality or quantity (which is also required by Alaska’s predator control law, but mostly ignored) for the Mulchatna herd and, rather than trying to understand what is truly limiting the herd (which they likely can’t do anything about), they’d rather do the easy thing.

Bryan Reiley is a former area wildlife biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game for Game Management Unit 17, where the Mulchatna caribou herd has its calving grounds.
