'I haven't seen it': Ryan Walters learns about 'harmful' assignment, Skiatook Supt. speaks out

SKIATOOK, Okla. — The Skiatook Public Schools Superintendent talked to 2 News about the research assignment which asked students "Is God real?"

2 News also talked about the assignment with State Superintendent Ryan Walters who said he didn't know about it before we asked him. .

This was the first assignment that seemed to bring the Bible into the classroom. Some parents wondered if similar assignments would appear more under Walters' leadership.

"I haven't seen it," Walters said. "Look, here's the reality. What we've seen in the classroom is the radical left attack, any mention of God, any mention of the Bible."

Skiatook's Superintendent Rick Loggins said the assignment was not up to their standards.

"World religions are taught in world history but that was not the unit that they were in. So, when we saw the assignment the high school principal met with the teacher. Discussed that with him and asked him to remove the assignment," said Loggins.

The assignment shocked Olivia Gray, her daughter was in the class. She talked to 2 News about the assignment:

She said it was harmful to people like her daughter, who is of native descent.

"My daughter is descended from many people who are forced into residential schools and Christianity was weaponized and so it just feels very unsafe for us," Gray said.

She said the problems start at the top at a state level not with the district.

"They need to really focus their attention and their energy on making sure we’re not 50th in the nation for education. Like they just really have other things that they need to work on besides indoctrinating children," Gray said.

She criticized Walters for confusing the message on what teachers can teach. She said his support for putting the Bible in schools blurred the lines and created fear for students of other religions. Her daughter Nettie Gray said the research paper was confusing and she felt uncomfortable when it was assigned. "In the past brought up the word religion, they’re always like if you’re uncomfortable about this type of topic, just let me know and we won’t talk about it, but he just went straight to the point," said Nettie.

2 News took Nettie's concerns to Walters.

"That's why we gave those additional guidelines. There will be more guidance is coming out as well. The districts, and that's where, you know, we tried to be crystal clear," said Walter.

But it wasn’t crystal clear with the assignment sparking more questions about the future of education in Oklahoma.

Loggins said he invited the Gray family to have a conversation about the assignment. They had that meeting Aug. 21.

He said they’re working to make sure all academic content meets their educational standards.

2 News sent the assignment to Walters, back hasn't heard back.

These recordings are confidential and are only for educational purposes. The recordings must not be shared in any form. Any dissemination of the recordings is a violation of the University policies and will be subject to Student Misconduct proceedings through the Office of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity. The office hours will not be recorded.

Scope of the Course

Understanding single-variable calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra would be best. I will provide notes on background material. We will look at numerical methods to solve equations rather than providing rigorous mathematical derivations. There will be online courses for you to complete to fill in the gaps in your understanding of the mathematical background. We will use standard library functions in Python for our solutions.

We will be following the required textbook closely. We will provide notes in class that will be posted on the web for topics not covered in the book. Unlike the traditional lecture format, our classes will be inquiry-based. You will be given problems that arise in traditional scientific fields. You will discuss with your peers devise and implement algorithms to solve those problems.

Learning Objectives

Analyze (understand in detail) the problem
Design an algorithm to solve the problem. In this design process, you will choose the appropriate numerical method, the most efficient algorithm, and the most data structure.
Code the algorithm in Python 3 using standard Python libraries
Visualize the results using standard visualization packages.
Write the results of your computations as a scientific paper.

Class Participation

You are expected to be in class and participate in class activities like coding and solving numerical problems. There is a grade associated with being engaged. I will drop the lowest of your two class participation scores.

There will be a quiz every week on Fridays. There will be around three questions in a given quiz. The questions will be from the reading assignments from the book, material discussed in class, or material in the assigned online courses. The quizzes will be hosted on Canvas. The quizzes are multiple-choice questions. There are no makeup quizzes. I will drop the lowest quiz grade. This number (one quiz) is non-negotiable. This drop will address any reasons you may have for missing a quiz.

Online Courses

This course requires some background in mathematics. To fill in your mathematics background gaps, you will be assigned online courses through Coursera and LinkedIn Learning. These courses are free and fun. Think of these courses as reading assignments. When you finish a course, you will upload a screenshot of the fact that you did it to Canvas. Our grading will be on a binary scale. You will get full credit if you complete a course and zero if you do not.

The Australian airline Qantas has blamed a coding error for vastly reduced pricing on hundreds of first-class flights sold last week.

About 300 travelers nabbed the tickets, priced at discounts of up to 85% on the usual fare rate for flights between Australia and the US.

A first-class journey between Sydney and New York costs about 15,000 Australian dollars, or about $10,000.

"Unfortunately, this is a case where the fare was actually too good to be true," a spokesperson told Business Insider in a statement on Monday.

Qantas' terms and conditions say it's allowed to rescind an offer if there's "an error or mistake that is reasonably obvious."

"As a gesture of goodwill, we're rebooking customers in Business Class at no additional cost," the statement added. "Customers also have the option of a full refund."

The Dallas Cowboys will be leaning on young talent during the 2024 season. Names like Cooper Beebe, Marshawn Kneeland, and Marist Liufau will be expected to make immediate impacts on the team.

Cowboys 2024 first-round pick Tyler Guyton is another one of those players and will have all eyes on him during Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns, as Guyton will be starting at left tackle and going against reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett.

After his preseason performance, it seems the Cowboys will be in good hands with Guyton.

According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), no other rookie offensive lineman had a better preseason than Guyton. The 2024 first-round pick finished the preseason with a PFF grade of 80.6, finishing 3rd best in run blocking and pass blocking while allowing only one pressure in his 30 pass-blocking snaps.

Guyton ranks four spots ahead of the first offensive tackle taken off the 2024 draft board, Los Angeles Chargers' Joe Alt.

Alt and Guyton played nearly the same amount of snaps during the preseason, with Guyton showing better grades in every category .

White Sox announce five roster moves

CHICAGO – Prior to tonight’s series finale against Detroit, the Chicago White Sox made the following five roster moves:

Claimed off Waivers from Houston (1): INF Jacob Amaya;
Recalled from Class AAA Charlotte (2): LHP Sammy Peralta and INF Bryan Ramos;
Optioned to Charlotte (1): LHP Ky Bush;
Designated for Assignment (1): INF Nick Senzel.

Amaya, 25, was designated for assignment by the Astros on Saturday. He was hitting .221/.308/.330 (59-267) with 10 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 32 RBI and 36 runs scored in 73 games with Class AAA Sugar Land after being acquired from Miami on April 6. Amaya has appeared in 35 games at second base, 25 at shortstop and seven at third.

Amaya, 6-foot and 180 pounds, also played in one game with the Astros as a defensive replacement on May 7 at Yankee Stadium.

Amaya, a native of El Monte, Calif., is a .251/.353/.389 (616-2,453) hitter with 113 doubles, 62 homers, 331 RBI and 419 runs scored in 667 games over seven minor-league seasons. He also has played in five MLB games with the Marlins and Astros, going 2-10 (.200) with two RBI, one run scored and one stolen base.

Amaya originally was selected by Los Angeles-NL in the 11th round of the 2017 draft out of South Hills High School in West Covina, Calif.

Peralta, 26, is 2-0 with a 1.27 ERA (4 ER/28.1 IP), 27 strikeouts and a .144 (13-90) opponents average in 20 outings with Charlotte this season. He also has recorded a 5.06 ERA (6 ER/10.2 IP) in seven relief appearances over three stints with the White Sox in 2024.

Ramos, 22, is hitting .257/.331/.412 (58-226) with 11 doubles, eight home runs, 29 RBI and 32 runs scored in 59 games with Charlotte this season. He has hit safely in 10 straight games, batting .333/.404/.548 (14-42) with three homers and 10 RBI. Ramos also appeared in 15 games with the White Sox from May 4-29, hitting .196 (9-46) with two doubles, two RBI and four runs scored.

Bush, 24, has gone 0-3 with a 5.60 ERA (11 ER/17.2 IP), 16 walks and 11 strikeouts in four starts after his contract was selected from Charlotte on August 5. He made his major-league debut on August 5 at Oakland.

Senzel, 29, batted .100 (3-30) with one double in 10 games with the White Sox after signing as a free agent on July 17.

With the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster is at 40.

Twins’ Byron Buxton expected to go on rehab assignment with Saints this week

Center fielder Byron Buxton, out since Aug. 12 because of a sore hip, won’t be activated until the Twins are sure he can play the outfield again, manager Rocco Baldelli said.

It appears Byron Buxton will play his first-ever games in Nebraska this week, a good sign that he will be playing in Minnesota again soon.

The Twins center fielder is likely to join the St. Paul Saints on a rehabilitation assignment before returning to the major league roster, Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said, “and I think we’re getting closer to that,” he added. “I don’t think it’ll be a long rehab assignment, but he probably will go on one.”

Buxton, out since Aug. 12 because of a sore hip, won’t be activated until the Twins are sure he can play the outfield again. Baldelli ruled out easing him back in as a designated hitter for a few days.

“We’re at our best when he’s in center field,” the manager said. “We need to get him ready to play the outfield.”

No specific dates have been decided upon, but the Class AAA Saints are set to open a six-day series with the Omaha Storm Chasers on Tuesday night, giving Buxton plenty of time to play a few games and return to the Twins before their homestand ends Sunday.

Bally Sports update could be coming

The Twins, and the several dozen other pro sports teams that are televised by Diamond Sports Group’s Bally Sports regional networks, might finally learn next week whether the networks will remain on the air.

A hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 3, in the Houston courtroom of federal bankruptcy judge Christopher Lopez, who will ultimately rule on whether to allow Diamond to implement its new business plan or order the company to shut down.

The latter possibility remains unlikely, especially after Diamond confirmed last week that it has reached agreements with 13 NBA teams and seven NHL teams, including the Timberwolves and Wild on Bally Sports North, to broadcast their games in the upcoming 2024-25 season. According to Sports Business Journal, the NBA teams have agreed to reductions between 30% and 40% of their previous rights fees, and the NHL teams roughly 20%.

But Amazon, which earlier this year announced it would pay Diamond $115 million in order to steam games on its Prime app, has withdrawn that offer, SBJ reported Monday. How that affects Diamond’s chances of receiving Lopez’s approval next week remains to be seen, especially since Major League Baseball has been outspoken in its skepticism that Diamond remains a viable business in an era of cord-cutting.

“If Diamond continues to exist, you can make an argument in some markets that the status quo with Diamond would be good for those clubs,” Twins President Dave St. Peter said last week. “We don’t have a long-term contract with them, so our situation is different. Diamond could be an option under the right circumstances for us, but there are other options, and we are actively exploring those.”

The Twins are committed to providing a direct-to-consumer streaming option next year and beyond, St. Peter reiterated, something the team hoped to do this season until the uncertainly surrounding Diamond’s bankruptcy lingered too long for them to find another partner.

Max Kepler ran on the field before Monday’s game in order to test his left knee, one day after knee soreness kept him out of the lineup. He missed Monday’s game, too, but Baldelli said an MRI test found no evidence of a serious injury, just “normal wear and tear for this time of year.”
